Re: Commentators
I enjoyed Barry Jones and the American guy on Friday’s Dazn card.
Always liked Al Bernstein.
Miss Ian Darke doing boxing.
Also used to find Steve Holdsworth good value on all the random Eurosport cards.

Put AI (that's Artificial Intelligence, not Bernstein) to good use and bring back Reg Gutteridge.

Ah , the old "2 falls and a submission" line rolled out every time a boxer fell over .The Gratest wrote: ↑10 Mar 2024, 15:45 Put AI (that's Artificial Intelligence, not Bernstein) to good use and bring back Reg Gutteridge.![]()
Good old Reg , didn't he have only 1 leg or something like that? .
Miss the good old days.

Re: Commentators
Darke and McCrory were great, obv Carpenter and Gutteridge, Watt too, I always liked Duke McKenzie too.
Woodhall has developed into a top class commentator, was wooden as hell, but really good now.
Ron is a pantomime act, Nielly and Smith were always awful.
Barry Jones is good

Re: Commentators
Ian Darke and Glen, by far the best
Ian also had a good vibe with jim watt. Ian always came across as having tremendous respect for fighters.

Re: Commentators
Ian Darke will always be number 1, Adam Smith cops of a lot flak but he did give the occasion that big fight feel, still doing well with GBM sports now.
I preferred Reg over Harry, I think Mike Costello has tarnished his legacy moving to DAZN, he hasn't translated well to TV and he felt like a spare part on the card on Friday.
Of the current active TV commentators in the UK, I'd say Andy Clarke is the best of the bunch.

Re: Commentators
Me too. I thought DAZN had it just right with him and Andy Lee. Now they've usually got two people doing colour and MIke not speaking enough.SeanBrennan wrote: ↑08 Mar 2024, 17:33he is number 1 for me Spud, he is pure class. He boxed as an amateur too.

Re: Commentators
I can imagine the technology being so good that they'll screen prime vs prime fights, Tyson vs Ali etc. Advanced AI having analysed every second of their primes and come up with how the fight would have went based on every possible mathematical calculations. Commentated on by Reg Gutteridge, every fight of his being analysed for what he would have said. The Gratest wrote: ↑10 Mar 2024, 15:45 Put AI (that's Artificial Intelligence, not Bernstein) to good use and bring back Reg Gutteridge.![]()
Re: Commentators
Reg Gutteridge, Jim Watt and Harry Carpenter. I also liked Steve Holdsworth too, as he was able to spot subtle things during a fight. Ron Macintosh is similar as he also can pick up on fighters reactions, as far as English commentators go.
Al Bernstien, Bob Sheridan, Gil Clancy and, though I never saw him (or heard him live) love Howard Cosell, for American commentators.

Re: Commentators
Howard Cosell was something else, the most arrogant obnoxious insufferable pompous egomaniac you could wish to come across. Yet most of the fighters loved him. There was a lot of Donald Trump about him in fact.
But boy could he call a fight when the drama was needed.
DOWN GOES FRAZIER!! DOWN GOES FRAZIER!!!
is one of the most iconic moments of the sport.

Re: Commentators
IMO Alex Steadman is/was by far and away the best boxing commentator of the past 10 years or so.
Unfortunately, since B0xnati0ns and MTK's demise I've rarely heard of him.
I'd love for either Talksport radio of BBC radio 5 to give Steadman a try. He might just be a sleeping giant of radio commentary.
While on the subject of commentary in general, TV and radio, there are way too many voices putting their oar in when the the actual boxing is taking place during a round. For me, it really detracts from the action. By all means let them talk their shit during the interval, but not during the round !
Radio also seems to have succumbed to this irritating fad
It's bad enough on TV with 3 different voices clambering to be heard, but at least you can watch the action for yourself. With radio you're totally reliant on second by second description, so allowing others to chip in during the rounds often leaves the listener in the dark ![[icon_witsend.gif] :witzend:](./images/smilies/icon_witsend.gif)
