It's rare I hear Rawlings do radio commentary these days but when he does it's a welcome treat

Ah , the old "2 falls and a submission" line rolled out every time a boxer fell over .
Good old Reg , didn't he have only 1 leg or something like that? .
Miss the good old days.

They told a funny story about Reg on Ringside Rewind a while back. Apparently despite having lost a leg he enjoyed having a dip in the sea and one time while hopping out back on to the beach he starts screaming “SHARK !!”

What did people think of John rawling

As a commentator, awful.

Ones I did like were Carpenter, Watt, Holdworth among others.

Gutteridge I could take or leave. When I first started following boxing in the late 70s, I quite liked his patter but once I had heard his catchphrases (they don't get paid for overtime, etc, etc) a dozen times, it started to grate a bit. He was better when ITV added Watt to cover the more technical side of the action taking place.

Also used to find Steve Holdsworth good value on all the random Eurosport cards.

I met Steve when boxing at an amateur show in Luton in the early 2000's, came across as a decent bloke and was genuinely surprised I recognised who he was..

He was also videoing/archiving all the fights - and this was a pretty low level novice amateur show.

Holdsworth could really hit the nail on the head sometimes during his commentary.

Also a bit obscure at times, but he boxed amateur (fought Cornelius Boza Edwards in the amateurs) & pro and tried his hand at other roles in boxing too so had a wealth of experience.

Dave Brenner maybe but British , commentated with Jim McDonnell when the shows were on Screensport. First time for that the whole/or most of the card was shown live on TV rather than the main event

IMO Alex Steadman is/was by far and away the best boxing commentator of the past 10 years or so.

Unfortunately, since B0xnati0ns and MTK's demise I've rarely heard of him.

I'd love for either Talksport radio of BBC radio 5 to give Steadman a try. He might just be a sleeping giant of radio commentary.


While on the subject of commentary in general, TV and radio, there are way too many voices putting their oar in when the the actual boxing is taking place during a round. For me, it really detracts from the action. By all means let them talk their shit during the interval, but not during the round !

Radio also seems to have succumbed to this irritating fad :roll: It's bad enough on TV with 3 different voices clambering to be heard, but at least you can watch the action for yourself. With radio you're totally reliant on second by second description, so allowing others to chip in during the rounds often leaves the listener in the dark :witzend:

Amen. One commentator, all of whom talk too much, even the one's who start of with this complaint in mind appear to succumb to the lure of their own voice over time. One expert please. No need for two.

Steedman commentates on the Seddiqi Sports shows which take place in the UAE on DAZN, there was one on the other week, I don't hear from him elsewhere, other the Boxing News podcast.

I like John Rawlings

I like big Ron McIntosh, the only man i know as tall as Tyson Fury, he really is.

Watt was one of the greatest 'colour' commentators. His commentary during Hagler v Hearns was a masterclass - "Heaarrrrrrns has cut haglerrrrrrr, I dinnae think he wanted to do that - Hagggglllerrrrr just loooks maaaaad." is one of my favourite lines ever.

I think Reg also said something about Hearns going down like a 'carpenters ruler.'

John Rawling was just plain dull, which is why BT replaced him with Fletch.

Also no chemistry with the excellent Barry Jones, which didn’t help. Barry since cannily snatched up by DAZN. He’s the new Jim Watt, but with a sense of humour.

His Hearns vs Duran commentary is very enthusiastic - "and DOWN".

And then when Duran gets KNFO - I think we hear Rosenthal's sex noise. "ooohhhh" - Its a cross between Frankie Howard and the infamous Gary Neville Torres commentary.
