Jessica McCaskill to defend title vs. Lauren Price on May 11

Jessica McCaskill will travel to Cardiff, Wales, to defend her WBA welterweight title against Lauren Price on May 11, promoter Boxxer announced on Wednesday. The fight at the Utilita Arena will be streamed live on Peacock in the USA.

McCaskill (12-3-1, 5 KOs), of Chicago, is a two-division champion. She won the WBC junior welterweight belt by defeating Erica Anabella Farias in 2018 and then added the WBA title with a decision win over Anahi Sanchez in May 2019. A year later she became undisputed welterweight champion by defeating Cecilia Braekhus and made three successful defenses. McCaskill moved down in weight in 2022 to challenge undisputed junior welterweight champion Chantelle Cameron and lost a unanimous decision. In her most recent fight in September, McCaskill fought to a split draw against Sandy Ryan.

"I don't know much about Price but when it comes to fighters from the UK the expectation is usually lots of back pedaling and holding," McCaskill said via news release. "I don't know if this will be the case but coming to Wales means Price is hopefully going to want to put on a good show. That's exactly what I want because I plan on doing the same. I'm here to steal all of her fans. I'm going to show her what it takes to be a champion and the belts will be coming back to America with me."

Price (6-0, 1 KOs), who grew up in Newport, just miles from Cardiff, is the first boxer from Wales to win an Olympic medal. She turned professional in June 2022, and she fought four times last year, including a decision win over former title challenger Silvia Bortot in December. Price, who hasn't fought in Wales since she started in boxing, is happy to be fighting in front of friends and family, but knows she is the challenger to a great champion.

"It'll be an incredible night for sure, to beat the reigning champion in Wales and keep the world titles here will be some feeling," Price said. "Jessica McCaskill is the current champion. She's game, experienced and strong but I'll be 100 percent ready for whatever she brings on the night. I believe in my ability. I back myself and like I said earlier, I can't wait to bring those world titles back home to Wales."

The winner of the fight will in position to unify titles with IBF champion Natasha Jonas, who's also promoted by Boxxer. Sandy Ryan holds the WBO title in the division.

Full respect to Lauren Price for her achievements and talent, but she's dull inside the ring and dull outside of the ring. I really have no interest in her career, definitely one where I can watch the undercard (if it's any good) and skip the main event.

Price did a walkaround at the football last week so wondered if she had an upcoming big fight announcement. I'd be tempted to get tickets for this dependant on the undercard, but will be on holiday anyway. Hope she does the business.

McKasill speaking highly of the UK.

Sounded a bit like Mikaela Mayer before the bad Jonas decision.

I imagine it will be similar here.

what a silly comment. Olympic champion, British champion, MBE and now fighting for a world title. I'll go out on a limb and say she's achieved more than you, at least you've clung on to your virginity, well done for that.

It’s a decent fight but it’s underwhelming if there are no other U.K. Sky shows in April or the rest of the May.

It’d mean 4 U.K. shows in 5 months on Sky…

Mayer/Jonas
Buatsi/Azeez
Clarke/Wardley
Price/McCaskill

This is the worst one of the 4. McCaskill has shown where she is in recent fights. Well beat by Cameron and deserved to lose to Ryan too.

Feels like this would should be a co-main rather than a headliner if Sky are going for quality over quantity.

Yeah it seems like a decent fight but is unlikely to live up to the significance being portrayed.

McCaskill is one of the most inept "undisputed" champions I've ever seen.

Spot on, Sky pushing these fighters like Price, Artingstall, Caroline Dubois and Fran Hennessy that don't move the needle, don't shift tickets but yet appear front and centre of their promotions.

The Sky hype machine was in overdrive about Caroline Dubois, who was quick to call out Rhiannon Dixon for going down another world title route, but deafening silent about Dubois withdrawing from purse bids for an IBF title fight against Beatriz Ferreira.

Nonsense. If you're correlating women's boxing as inferior simply because it's women's boxing.

I spent 10 years watching IBA, WBU, WBF title fights between men. It was depressing.

Its always about money. A rule of thumb, you pay more you get better. But then again, a British title fight - much lower cost - usually delivers better value to the viewer than any number of world title fights.

That's a slightly different point.

But then, as I mentioned, it used to be Steve Roberts defending a WBF Light-Middleweight belt 6 times a year once upon a time. While domestically Takaloo had the WBU, Williams IBO, Alexander European and challenging for WBO.

That too was misrepresentation of the truth; that none of them were champions, world class or realistically ever going to box one of the big names. WA late notice versus Santos proving rather than dispelling the idea.

So, yes, opportunistic to use cheap options who in this decade happen to be women.

Its not about equality, its about economics - isn't it?

If women are apparently as good and dynamic as the men give them they're own shows then and see how many bother to watch !..plus stop being a box ticker and be honest and say what you think instead being brainwashed into going along with the woke media !

It's not solely about economics, Sky have been pushing a female first agenda for some time, without necessarily basing this on merit, so it would be folly to not recognise this also.

Which I believe is a good thing.

And I'll resist any suggestion that SKY's 'quality' has dropped simply because of it.

Its been crap many many times long before the focus on promoting women.

Well I disagree with you on your first point.

I am not suggesting Sky's quality has dropped solely because they are overly promoting women without merit, it's for various reasons, of which this is one.

I think conclude my opinions on this now as I doubt we'll reach a mutual agreement on it.

Decent little step up, but McCaskill was always shy of elite elite and is now pushing 40. If Price cannot beat her, then I think we can really forget her as a world champion

Hughie Fury joins May 11th McCaskill vs Price show

Thomas Patrick Ward also sees action on the undercard

A week before cousin Tyson battles Oleksandr Usyk for undisputed heavyweight glory, Hughie Fury will have his second bout in under a month on Boxxer’s May 11th McCaskill vs Price show.

Fury (27-3, 15 KO), who’s still just 29, just beat 10-15-1 Kostiantyn Dovbyshchenko in his first bout since 2021. He faces a similarly nonexistent challenge in Germany’s Patrick Korte (21-3-1, 18 KO); though the 40-year-old “Big Patrick” has eyes that stare directly into my soul from that poster, his record is hollow.

Other bouts of note include unbeaten 24-year-old featherweight Rhys Edwards’ (15-0, 4 KO) clash with Thomas Patrick Ward (34-1-1, 5 KO). This marks Ward’s second fight since getting routed by Otabek Kholmatov last year, which is plenty forgivable in the grand scheme of things, while Edwards is coming off a decision over Brad Foster.

Light heavyweight Lewis Edmonson (8-0, 3 KO) will also be in action in a grievous mismatch against Joel McIntyre (20-8, 5 KO).
