fun fight, but jeez that is shocking standard for an olympic medalist and a multi time national champ. how many times did wells telegraph a wild uppercut from long range. and egan literally windmilling at points. great efforts though

Bobby "has done it for Britain" Wells, had a poor Pro career after winning a Bronze at the Los Angeles Olympics

Strange how some things seem stuck in your mind forever. I was 10 years old in 1984 and remember staying up late to watch the boxing. I'm not sure of the commentator, but I believe it was Harry Carpenter.

Wells came out against some Tongan bloke in the quarter finals of the Super Heavyweights. Whiter than a sheet and looking all gangly and ginger.

He threw a piledriver which landed and sparked the opponent out cold. Carpenter's voice broke as has shouted "and Bobby Wells has done it for Britain"

Despite searching I have never managed to find a clip of that. It's probably slightly different from how remember it, but 40 years on I still remember it and I'm still staying up half the night to watch boxing

I have a very similar memory. I could remember a Brit boxer, not looking that great, but sparking someone out with a huge punch. It wasn't until years later, and the aid of google, I found out it was Bobby Wells.
I can remember watching it whilst on a family holiday up in Cullen (north coast Scotland), but not much else.

Edit: I had a google search but also couldn't find it. The other memory I have from those games and the boxing was the uproar after Henry Tillman was given the win over the Italian boxer in the semis.

His son was a good fighter, NABC champ, actually both his sons were good.
I remember just after just going pro, I was a bit cocky with Matt in sparring, trying to show him who was boss, he walked me into a big right hand, broke my nose!
Also remember Matt knocking out John Humphreys, the Southern area champ in a round.
They had a rematch, Matt being overconfident had his jaw broke with the first punch of the fight.
He was down a couple of times but grittily made it through the round.
Between rounds they were sweeping up his broken teeth, Freddie sent him out for the second but fortunately the ref stepped in before too long, Matt was too brave for his own good, really nice guy too.

Good read, cheers Coco. I used to go to the boys club in the 80s next to what is now Kingsmeadow Stadium, before they moved into new premises further into the Cambridge Estate. I quickly learned I was crap and should stick to football and cricket.
