I am reading the “matchmaker” posts on this and other threads.

To be a matchmaker is so brave and is such a thankless task so all the very best Jack from this thread and the many other matchmakers.

I couldn’t do the job, I once skirted with the idea and got found out within a couple of days the job was beyond me.

I will list some of the problems a matchmaker faces:

Finding a suitable ranked opponent for the good and benefit of the fighter.

Finding a suitable opponent that meets the promoters needs.

Are Tv happy.

Are the BBBofC happy

Late withdraws

At the weigh I have both fighters met the weight, if not will a fighter accept compensation.

Rival matchmakers/promoters pulling their fighter out when it’s too late to find another …

Come on matchmakers what have I forgot?

Foreign fighters refusing to board flights or leave hotels.
African fighters requiring uk bloods
Getting UK Bloods sent to the board.
and in one case a foreign fighter having been stopped but it not being on Boxrec as commission isn’t recorded but once I knew morally couldn’t put him in so had to replace him 48 hours before.

😳😳😳

I remember working on a Steve wraith promotion … a foreign fighter checked. Into his hotel on the morning of the fighter and duly got pi*sed in the bar and failed to turn up to the. Venue for his fight.

Hi Sean. For the most part I loved it. I went from watching boxing on TV to being involved with some people I really respected, so it was a bit surreal!

I was, however, a lot younger then and didn't really who know I was, so think I would have enjoyed it even more if I had just relaxed a bit and enjoyed the ride.

I don't think it is that hard to get into at some level if you put in the graft. I kind of fell into it. Myself and a business partner launched one of the first boxing websites in the UK and travelled the country attending press conferences/fights. Everyone from small hall promoters to the big boys welcomed us and I got to know people that way.

In the end we sold the site and I moved over to working for a promoter. That obviously narrowed my circle, but the people I worked with were great.

Yes, there are some surprisingly nice people in the sport. Many were kind to me when I had some issues and not one person judged me. I am in still in touch with a few people now. On the whole boxing people are generally funny, either intentionally or by accident. I don't think it is an industry I would go back to though - it is very intense!

Hello Frostie,

I loved boxing its like a drug, it keeps drawing you back in.

When you finished with the 1st promoter you work for why didn’t you move to another.?

I am very surprised you didn’t work for the person who brought you out .

I've worked in boxing on and off for the past 18 years or so.

Started just submitting random articles to random websites on a voluntary basis and then got a small retainer from one website for editing work and then began freelancing for Boxing News and pretty much producing all the boxing content in the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Later, I was made media officer for Hatton Promotions, which despite the company's relatively short stint on Sky Sports, I continued to do it for six years and dealt with Spud a few times along the way. Top fella.

When the Hatton gig ended I told myself was going to go back to what I did before, financial services, and would concentrate solely on a 'proper job', but boxing people never really let you walk fully away so I still keep my hand by doing bits of video work for Josh Wale and Stefy Bull and I'm back doing the odd Boxing News article here and there.

Hello pal how are you doing?

You had a lucky escape when I asked you to work for Mr Haye and it subsequently fell through

You are completely correct about not being able to walk away …

thanks for sharing your story Frostie, really interesting. Was it strange seeing the site after you sold it? Must have been hard as you'd created it from nothing. Well done on both your roles in the sport mate.

I’m good pal. Hope you are too. Sorry to hear about your condition.

You’re probably right about Haye. I was up for it at the time but I think me and Mr Haye would probably have clashed personality wise.

If you’re up for a catch up give me a bell sometime mate.

Being a boxing Fan is addictive. As for working in boxing, it is not, simply because you can't make a living out of it at small hall level. Plus there is all the hassle of dealing with fighters - who are a notoriously unreliable bunch.

Working in boxing is hard graft and without doubt you have to make sacrifices and take risks Employment risks.

Its not an impossible dream but its a long shot and you have to have an impeccable work ethic and make decisions yourself.

Like i have eluded to, my son is presently in USA working on a misfits show … he works his nuts off mu
But to secure regular work with misfits and wasserman he has sacked his full time job.

if anyone wants help or advice working in boxing dm me .. good luck
