Mark Heffron To Fight Christian Mbilli in Quebec On May 25

Arslanbek Makhmudov faces Junior Fa in the co-feature

Mark Heffron has been handed the opportunity to change the entire course of his career.

On May 25, the big-punching super middleweight will travel to Canada and fight the unbeaten Christian Mbilli, 26-0 (22 KOs), at the Gervais Auto Centre in Quebec. The WBC continental and the WBA international belts will be on the line.

The heavy-handed Frenchman is in a rich vein of form and has recently recorded quality victories over Carlos Gongora and Rohan Murdock. Mbilli, 28, is ranked in the top five with all four major governing bodies and sits at number three in the Ring Magazine rantings.

Last September Heffron, 30-3-1 (24 KOs), was stopped in three rounds by his former gym-mate, Jack Cullen, and lost his British and Commonwealth titles in the process.

After that defeat, the 32 year old from Oldham teamed up with Manchester-based trainer Lee Beard, and returned to action in February with a confidence-boosting knockout of Serhii Ksendzov. After that fight Heffron’s manager Kevin Maree told Boxing Scene that rather than rebuilding at British level he and Heffron wanted to continue progressing and would be open to offers from across the Atlantic.

“I think this ticks every single box I was looking for,” Maree said. “I wanted an away fight with meaning. I could have got him many away fights but we wanted something to sink our teeth into. If Mark wins this one, it propels him ahead of any place he’s ever been close to being in his career. It’s perfect.”

Maree knows that Heffron faces a difficult task but is also certain that Mbilli is in for an extremely dangerous night’s work. The higher reaches of the super-middleweight division are occupied by top quality operators like the undisputed champion, Saul “Canelo" Alvarez, Jaime Munguia and promising fighters like David Morrell, Edgar Berlanga and Diego Pacheco. Mbilli sits comfortably in that company but, style-wise, Maree believes that he couldn’t have found a better big name opponent for Heffron.

“Mbilli is unbeaten but I also think he’s perfect for Mark,” he said. “If you watch him, he can be hit and if you’re fighting Mark Heffron and you’re easy to hit you’ve got a big problem. If he lands, you’re in big trouble.

“Mark’s needed a fight like this. They are going to meet and they are going to trade. There’s no way around that. He’s not some big, tall elusive boxer who’s gonna run around the ring and evade Mark for 10 rounds. This is a fighter who’s gonna stand with Mark and trade and I’ve always said that Mark Heffron has got world-class, special power.

“We made a mistake for a few years of getting down to middleweight and I think he lost a bit of power because he was killing himself to make weight. At 168lbs, he’s a dangerous, dangerous animal.”

Heffron is popular fighter from a well-known family and while that brings plenty of benefits, it also brings its own pressures. Maree has managed Heffron for years and has longed for the chance to see him let off the leash, away from the stress of fighting in front of an expectant home crowd and the constant demands for his attention that eat up valuable hours as a fight approaches.

Heffron will go to Canada and be able to concentrate purely on the task at hand and after the defeat to Cullen he will carry very few expectations to the ring. Maree used his connections to secure the fight and is confident that all the pieces are in place for Heffron to produce a special performance.

“I’ve said this so many times over the years,” he said. “Sometimes a loss can be a huge blessing because you get an opportunity that you wouldn’t have otherwise. If Mark had beaten Jack Cullen we would never have got this fight. What happened happened. We’ve got the fight and Mark can win it and propel himself 10 levels above where he would have been.

“We’ll be well looked after. There won’t be any silliness. It’s a fair fight and one that I’m really confident in. Mark’s attitude towards it is that he just can’t wait. He’s so excited and it’s everything that he wants as well.”

Press Release

Super middleweight contender Christian "Solid" Mbilli, who recently signed a co-promotional contract with Top Rank, will defend his WBA International and WBC Continental Americas titles in the 10-round main event against Mark "Kid Dynamite" Heffron on Saturday, May 25 at Gervais Auto Center in Shawinigan, Canada.

In the 10-round heavyweight co-feature, the man known as the "Lion," Arslanbek Makhmudov, will fight former amateur nemesis Junior Fa.

This international event will be presented by Eye of the Tiger, in collaboration with the Cataractes and the City of Shawinigan. Mbilli-Heffron, Makhmudov-Fa, and undercard bouts will stream live and exclusively in the U.S. on ESPN+ starting at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT.

“It's always a source of pride to bring major fights to Mauricie, but this time, I can undoubtedly say we're reaching another level. These are highly risky international fights we'll present on May 25, where there will be no room for error. But, with Mbilli and Arslanbek, we aim for the top, so we must be ready to face real challenges," said Eye of the Tiger President Camille Estephan.

Mbilli (26-0, 22 KOs) has run roughshod over a host of super middleweight hopefuls, including former world title challenger Nadjib Mohammedi and Ecuadorian puncher Carlos Góngora. Most recently, as the co-feature to the Artur Beterbiev-Callum Smith main event in Quebec City, he battered Rohan Murdock en route to a sixth-round stoppage in front of more than 10,000 spectators.

Mbilli said, “No matter where he comes from and who he is, my opponent will have to arrive ready because on May 25, I will once again demonstrate why I belong with the elite of the super middleweights. Mark Heffron is just another boxer on my path. I respect him, but I won't be gentle with him, just like with the others. I am convinced that we will deliver quite a fight in Shawinigan, but victory is the only option for me.”

Heffron (30-3-1, 24 KOs), from Oldham, England, is a former British and Commonwealth super middleweight champion who once fought to a draw with one-time world title challenger Denzel Bentley. He rebounded from last September’s TKO defeat to Jack Cullen with February’s second-round TKO over Serhii Ksendzov.

Heffron said, "I am incredibly excited to be coming over to Canada to box Christian Mbilli. I have followed Christian's career and always thought we would end up boxing each other. We are two of the most exciting super middleweights out there, so this will be an excellent fight that the fans will love. I am very confident of winning this fight. I wouldn't be traveling all the way to Canada if I wasn't sure of the win.”

Makhmudov (18-1, 17 KOs) steps back into the ring in Shawinigan to restart his conquest of the heavyweight division. After suffering a knockout defeat and a double-hand fracture against Agit Kabayel last October, he will attempt to settle an old score. Fa bested Makhmudov via five-round decision in 2012 in Mumbai, India, as part of the World Series of Boxing.

"I've already faced him in a very close fight that he won when we were amateurs, so I am more than determined to avenge that defeat," Makhmudov said.

Fa (20-3, 11 KOs) is an eight-year pro who started his career 19-0 before dropping a decision to fellow New Zealander Joseph Parker in 2021. He was part of last December's “Day of Reckoning” super event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, hanging tough before being knocked out in the seventh round by unbeaten contender Frank Sanchez.

CHRISTIAN MBILLI GROOMED TO NEXT FACE SERGIY DEREVYANCHENKO WITH MAY 25 WIN OVER MARK HEFFRON

Super middleweight contender Christian Mbilli is guaranteed a summer fight date with an injury-free win this weekend.

The Ring has confirmed that Sergiy Derevyanchenko is in line to face the unbeaten super middleweight contender on August 17 in Quebec City, Canada. The bout is contingent upon Mbilli emerging victorious and unscathed versus Mark Heffron this Saturday on ESPN+ from Shawinigan, Canada.

From there, Mbilli, The Ring’s No. 2-rated super middleweight, will square off with Derevyanchenko, a three-time former title challenger.

The August 17 date was verified to The Ring by Top Rank’s Hall of Fame matchmaker Brad Goodman, confirming a breaking news report from ESPN.com’s Mike Coppinger. Mbilli is co-promoted by Top Rank and Eye of The Tiger Management, and trained by Marc Ramsey.

Mbilli (26-0, 22 knockouts) is listed by FanDuel sportsbook as a -2500 favorite to defeat England’s Heffron this weekend.

Heffron (30-3-1, 24 KOs) has won five of his last six bouts since a Nov. 2020 knockout loss Denzel Bentley. All five wins during that stretch have come inside the distance. The 32-year-old Brit last fought on February 24 in his hometown of Oldham, where he stopped Serhii Ksendzov in the second round. Heffron was stopped by fringe contender Jack Cullen in the third round in his previous bout last Sept. 2.

The bout is the second of the year for the Montreal-based Cameroonian, who stopped Rohan Murdock after six rounds on Jan. 26 in Quebec City. Murdock was game but overwhelmed by the heavy-handed Mbilli.

The win came four months after Mbilli manhandled Demond Nicholson inside of two rounds. The 29-year-old contender also holds victories over Carlos Gongora, Ronald Ellis and former title challenger Nadjib Mohammedi.

An amateur standout, Mbilli represented France at the 2016 Olympic Games. His targeted summertime opponent boasts a similar amateur pedigree.

Derevyanchenko (15-5, 10 KOs) represented Ukraine in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The 38-year-old is now based in Brooklyn, where he earned a ten-round win over Vaughn Alexander on April 20.

The feat put him back in the win column after he lost four of his previous five bouts. Derevyanchenko dropped a narrow decision to then-unbeaten Jaime Munguia last June 10 in Ontario, California. Their terrific 12-round slugfest was honored by the Boxing Writers Association of America as the 2023 Fight of the Year.

Derevyanchenko suffered three defeats in major title fights.

He dropped competitive decisions one year apart to stablemate Daniel Jacobs in Oct. 2018 and Gennadiy Golovkin in Oct. 2019, both with the IBF middleweight title at stake. Jermall Charlo then convincingly defeated Derevyanchenko in their Sept. 2020 WBC middleweight title fight.
