Fights That Should Have Been Stopped, Only For The Opponent To Come Back And Win.
Fights That Should Have Been Stopped, Only For The Opponent To Come Back And Win.
Got any good examples?
When should they have been stopped?
When should they have been stopped?

Probably could include corrales-Castillo. Guy looked done but rallied big time. Going back a few years you could say Archie Moore - Yvonne Durrelle.

evgeny romanov vs zaolin zhang arguably
zhang dropped hard and absolutely battered for the first round and a half. could've easily been stopped several times. but romanov has a bizarre lapse in concentration and gets caught with his hands down and ko'd. kd around 10:55 if you want to start with the arse kicking part

Ali said he couldn't continue and wanted the fight stopped after the fourth round. Fortunately for him, calmer forces prevailed.

Benn V McClellan.
Benn was very fortunate not to be counted out in the first.
He was naturally granted more time to get back into the ring after being knocked through the ropes, but he received help to get back in and I think the referee was very generous.

You could argue Fury was worthy of being stopped due to cuts vs Wallin
Going back, Archie Moore could easily have been stopped vs Durelle

Wilfred Benitez really needed pulling out of his first fight with Bruce Curry at the Garden back in 1977. I don't know what referee Arthur Mercante is doing. He allows Benitez to continue after two horrible knockdowns in round four, with Benitez smashing his head off the canvas on both occasions. Benitez goes down again early in the fifth, gets up and staggers to a neutral corner where he turns his back and begins wiping his feet in an imaginary resin tray. Mercante turns the man around and lets him go on.

Frank Bruno was off in la-la-land against Jumbo Floyd Cummings.
Admitted it himself and it was dangerous stuff by his corner.
I also wonder whether Ali would have actually been allowed to continue against Cooper in this era. Dundee's time-extending tactics notoriously helped things of course but that was still a helluva take down by Cooper.
It is probably only known to Brit fans but Danny Williams shanking his shoulder against Mark Potter in a Brit title fight was horrible to watch and he was fighting one armed......that would have been stopped now.

I have always loved the Jimmy Cable v Said Skouma fight. Cable had been counted four times and was loosing big time, when he suddenly found the punch to turn the things around.

it was a nice kd but ali was up fast, the round was over, and he was winning the fight till then with little punishment taken. ali only got a few seconds extra in recovery between rounds and went straight back to getting the better of cooperBodyshot3 wrote: ↑05 Apr 2024, 14:29 Frank Bruno was off in la-la-land against Jumbo Floyd Cummings.

Saad Muhammad against Yaqui Lopez maybe. I haven’t watched it in awhile. Watched it on the tube when it was on. I seem to recall Yaqui teeing off there but Saad hung in there. The rest is history. Maybe now adays Saad gets the hook.

Plenty of fights were allowed to continue in its time but would absolutely be stopped now.
Holmes vs Snipes:
Holmes dropped hard in the 3rd(?), gets back to his feet then staggers face first into the turnbuckle which held him up.
No way he is allowed to continue at any time by any ref(including Smoger)in the last 20-25 years but in the early 1980s was allowed to continue and he won.

Not sure it was as cut and dry as that, it was around 20 seconds into the 7th round and Holmes went down hard but stood straight back up, probably too quickly and that’s why he fell into the turnbuckle but I’m not sure the ref saw that as he was sending Snipes to the neutral corner. Holmes was hurt but fought back for the rest of the round. I think a stoppage at that point would’ve been harsh.Perseus wrote: ↑07 Apr 2024, 21:12 Plenty of fights were allowed to continue in its time but would absolutely be stopped now.

If the ref didn't see him fall into the turnbuckle that's different.
If he had seen it maybe he stops the fight.
In the last 20-25 years downed fighters who get up then have trouble staying up unassisted are never allowed to continue.
Even if they can stay up, staggering a little bit will get most refs to stop the fight.
That wasn't always true when I was a kid and all the way into my late 20's/early 30's.

If you would've stopped Pacquiao vs Marquez 1 in the 1st round after Pac scored his 3rd knockdown, nobody would've complained. Nobody would've thought it was unfair.
But look what we would've missed out on. Marquez technically eventually came back to win....the 4th fight
So I say it counts.

Good call.
They didn't stop it in the 1st round and fans eventually got 4 great fights from those two.

What a fight.
Big George was all but knocked out; how he got up I will never know.

TOmmy Loughran wa stopped on cuts by Ray Impelletri. Loughran blew a cork and argued his way into having the fight continued -- and he won!
