I'm on a bit of a look down memory lane this evening. Thinking about all those boxers who have come and gone, and not necessarily doing that well in the ring.
You know as I sit here typing this out I think of the brave souls who have had the balls to climb through the ropes, time after time and not make the great heights of stardom. Now, I could think of the likes of Herol Graham who had a unique talent, and Michael Watson who fought under the radar but would have almost won a few titles if not suffered from the the fight with Chris Eubank.
There are a few boxers that have touched my heart not only because of their willingness and bravery, such as Michael Watson, but have shown grit in the sport possibly knowing that they will never be a world champion but plug on trying to compete at a level of success.
My vote goes to Richard Evatt, who battled along and at the top of his game stayed with Junior Jones for 11 rounds for the IBO title, I'm not really interested in the title at stake but for a British domestic boxer to compete against the likes of Junior Jones is admirable, but was never far away in that fight, and matched a true authentic champion for 11 rounds.
Who do you put forward in this topic and why?
Jamie Moore. Beast of a fighter and am now fortunate to call him a friend
I met Wayne Alexander at the York hall years ago and told him I used to love watching him fight but he didn’t seem to impressed when I said I thought Samuels would beat him. He said he could crack though and he didn’t hate him. He did however tell me he hated takaloo. He was with a boxer at the time who I didn’t recognise and told me to look out for him but I don’t recall seeing him box.

Neville Brown came across as a nice, laid back kinda guy outside of the ring, and always gave an honest account of himself inside the ring. He was in a few cracking fights and I remember him dismantling Shaun Cummins in 5 cracking rounds (after reading about Cummins death and background, he sounds like the complete opposite of Brown outside of the ring)
Yeah. Light middle was red hot for a while there. He was from Margate wasn’t he? Via Iran. I swear I read something about him a while back but can’t remember what.

I always liked him. He had a decent dig on him and was a good boxer. I felt like he was thrown tk the lions a bit against a rampant and much bigger Collins. They had him as pundit on sky for a bit but wasn’t particularly good or inciteful but even Claude Abrahams came across a bit dry on there at times.
He was value for money. Usually won by stoppage or got stopped. I remember him drilling Willie Quinn after they were hyping him up and has a doozy of a fight with the gypsy Frenchman.

Hacime Cherifi; looked a bit like 1980's action movie villain with his bald head and strange ponytail combo. He fought a few brits if I remember?
That's right, vague memories of that as well, derailing The Mighty Quinn.

Aye I remember that one. One of the best one punch KOs in a British ring. Maybe only bettered by the thacko KO of Paul Ryan where he practically decapitated him. As you posted that I was watching the sky sports piece with Jamie Moore talking to Alexander about that KO.
I think I met Terry Dunstan the same night and was chatting to him. I completely threw him by talking about his fights and he assumed I was “in the game” and had worked him with in the past. I remember him absolutely levelling Gurov in a round to the point he looked like he was dead. Haye did the exact sssme thing about ten years later. Olafabi levelled dunstan with one punch in Germany, that was a hard watch. I think the extended highlights of his fight with Thompson are on YouTube. Added bonus of beaky beacroft doing the commentary.
Jamie Conlan. Never hit the heights despite good promo backing and family boost.
Went to war every single time against opponents you thought he could outbox. His fight against Nelson was legendary stuff and it’s not often you hear about it, even amongst us nerds. Showed crazy bravery against Jerwin Ancajas in a performance that has aged brilliantly.
Never got that world belt but always remember his career fondly and comes across sound in interviews and pods etc.
Some brilliant names being mentioned with lots of great memories. Jamie Conlan certainly was an all action fighter with balls like King Kong. Every fight I remember of his was blood and guts.

Ah the WBU days. Miss those cards truly. Great fun.
Tak is a likeable fella.
Him and Jim even went on a Reality show called “Britain’s hardest”. Car crash tv with Steve McFadden and Ian “The machine” Freeman. I Still watched it tho

Hahahaha I would definitely also have watched it. Steve McFadden came to a celebrity football match when I was a teenager, got into trouble before the match and had to leave. Nobody messes with Phil.
I watched so many WBU fights, I think it would have continued to grow as a belt if Jon Robinson the founder had not died, it had momentum and profile.

this made me laugh, I am imagining an orange martial artist beating Phil Mitchell up.

That's mad. Didn't know they were related.
yeah apparently they had a tough old upbringing, and Takaloo was quite handy outside the ropes. Hes a decent lyricist. he did a song called The Pen that I really rate.
