God, I'd hate to speculate - but was stunned to read he was coming back. I really thought the Burns fight was a one off - final "get cash" fight and fully expected him to walk off to the sunset.

What I would call an "honest" box / fighter and he is in my thoughts at this difficult time.

Gutted for Chris Jenkins also - now I think there was the thread about domestic fighters you really believed would go further - Jenkins would have been high on my list. I thought he would really get to the cusp of World class.

British title is no mean achievement and perhaps in hindsight, power might have always been an issue to get much beyond that (and cuts of course) but he was a really beautiful boxer to watch and another "honest" pro.

To be fair, I don't think anyone were holding Willie to gunpoint and forcing him to fight on. However, yes a bit of common sense from promoters to say "no" would have been good.

Yeh not saying Willie was blameless but promoters and the board shouldn't have allowed it, he's in his mid 40s ,Laws no world beater but he's a young strong kid

willie couldnt punch much, not particularly fast etc, but his form was excellent. someone youngsters should watch. has he trained any fighters?

You can be a genuine world title holder, and retire skint.

A lot depends on what you earn during those fights, but also what you do with that money, so many fighters get sucked dry by people promising once in a lifetime opportunities to invest and other such schemes.

Police Scotland spokesman said: “Around 8.05am on Saturday, April 6, 2024, police were called to a report of a 45-year-old man found unresponsive within a car in Heatherbell Road, Coatbridge.

“The man was taken to Monklands Hospital where medical staff describe his condition as critical. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

That's a sad thought. He seemed a nice chap and was one hell of a contender who made the most of what he had
