ARCHIE MOORE, surely among the greats of all time
love to watch Archie Moore fight, what a beautiful mover in the ring, so hard to nail cleanly and surely heavyweight champion of the World had he been a bit heavier at his peak. great memories

Re: ARCHIE MOORE, surely among the greats of all time
I have rated the great Archie Moore at #2 at light-heavyweight. The #1 guy was a guy that licked him 3 times, the great Ezzard Charles.
At pound per pound, he is top 15, I have him rated at #13 all-time.

Archie Moore is the only fighter that fought heavyweight champions Rocky Marciano, Floyd Patterson and Muhammad Ali.

So we’ll see him in your top 100 list around 2030? You need to hurry up because I may not last that longelmersalsa wrote: ↑20 Jan 2024, 17:54 I have rated the great Archie Moore at #2 at light-heavyweight. The #1 guy was a guy that licked him 3 times, the great Ezzard Charles.

Re: ARCHIE MOORE, surely among the greats of all time
Charles winning 3/3 vs Moore is a huge part of his resume.

The sky, surely its blue...
Re: ARCHIE MOORE, surely among the greats of all time
Archie's dress sense deserves a nod.
Re: ARCHIE MOORE, surely among the greats of all time
He is at Light Heavyweight... At Heavy? Maybe not so much... Didn't achieve enough.

you should check out Archie Moore's 1960 autobiography.
It was co-written by the author of The Manchurian Candidate.

Ultimately, it goes down to if you prefer The Old Mongoose to the Cincinnati Cobra. Tough call, both were great nicknames.

I remember reading (somewhere) that
Cus D'Amato was going to train Jim Jacobs (who was the world handball champion)
to fight Archie Moore. It was going to be Jim Jacobs first fight ever (either as amateur or pro)
but Archie Moore pulled out of it at the last minute.

I always think of Moore as the cross over between the new and old from him fighting both Marciano and Ali.

yeah, like Jack Sharkey who fought Jack Dempsey in the 1920's and later Joe Louis in the 1930's.

Re: ARCHIE MOORE, surely among the greats of all time
About 15 years ago we had a young relative of Matchroom Cornerman 'Red' Brennan in our amateur gym.
Red started helping out and told us a story from way back in 1956 when he was training for a fight alongside Archie Moore who was in the UK to take on Yolande Pompey at Haringey Arena. Seeing that he'd not got an abdominal protector Archie gave him his, which Red brought into the gym to show the lads.
Probably not most folks first choice for must see memorabilia but with providence and rarity, for those who were old enough to remember Archies achievements it was a bit of a highlight!
Down the pub when claims to fame include 'i.ve met xyz boxers', 'I've held the bollock guard of one of the Worlds greatest ever boxers', is a bit of a trump card.
