Terence Crawford-Israil Madrimov Heading to Los Angeles?

Initial conversations have taken place to stage a World Boxing Association junior-middleweight title fight between champion Israil Madrimov and unbeaten, three-division champion Terence Crawford Aug. 3 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Boxing Scene has learned.

The card would mark the first American foray by Saudi Arabia’s Turki Alalshikh, the chairman of the Kingdom’s General Entertainment Authority who has staged several major cards in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing will handle the promotion, according to an individual who spoke to BS on the condition of anonymity because the deal is not finalized.

On Wednesday, Turki Alalshikh posted a photo on “X” of Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs) standing in a ring with multiple championship belts, to which the fighter responded with an emoji of curious and interested expressions.

The main event would mark Crawford’s attempt to capture a belt in a fourth weight class after previously standing as both undisputed welterweight and 140-pound king.

Uzbekistan’s Madrimov (10-0-1, 7 KOs) captured the WBA belt on March 8 in Riyadh, defeating Magomed Kurbanov by fifth-round TKO.

Madrimov, 29, trains in Indio, Calif., a two-hour drive east of the famed Coliseum, which has hosted the 1932 and 1984 Summer Olympics.

Alalshikh, who is preparing to stage the undisputed heavyweight title fight between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk on May 18 and the undisputed light-heavyweight championship fight between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitrii Bivol in Riyadh on June 1, has shown an interest in producing stacked cards.

The effort is first focused on getting Crawford and Madrimov finalized, but given the historic location, the supporting fights should be talent-littered.

I've just seen the WBO will be ruling this one an interim title match for some reason.

Andy Ruiz, 'Pitbull' Cruz to Feature on Aug. 3 Terence Crawford Card

Smaller venue, bigger card.

Upon further review, those promoting Terence Crawford’s Aug. 3 pursuit of a fourth division title have decided to make the venue more intimate than the massive Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum by shifting their focus next door to BMO Stadium, officials with knowledge of the change told Boxing Scene on Monday.

While downsizing from the historic 75,000-plus-seat to the six-year-old 22,000-seat soccer-centered BMO Stadium (formerly Banc of California Stadium), the promotion marking the debut U.S. event of Saudi Arabia’s Turki Alalshikh has started significantly beefing up the card with elite talent from Mexico.

In addition to Crawford’s main-event bout against WBA junior middleweight champion Israil Madrimov (10-0-1, 7 KOs), the card is scheduled to include the first 140-pound title defense by Mexico’s new WBA 140-pound champion Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz and the return of former world heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr., the officials told BS.

A formal news conference to announce the card is scheduled for Wednesday in New York. Earlier Monday, BS reported that the Crawford-Madrimov bout will also be for the WBO interim junior middleweight title (while champion Sebastian Fundora recovers from a broken nose).

Cruz (26-2-1, 18 KOs) won his belt with an electrifying eighth-round stoppage of former champion Rolando “Rolly” Romero on March 30 in the co-main event to Fundora’s two-belt, junior middleweight title victory over Australia’s Tim Tszyu in Las Vegas.

Cruz was the prohibitive fan favorite among all fighters on that card, and his handlers immediately let it be known he would return quickly, in a bout in either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

Cruz’s Aug. 3 opponent will reportedly be Mexico's Jose "El Rayo" Valenzuela (13-2, 9 KOs), who defeated Chris Colbert in December.

Former heavyweight champion Ruiz (35-2, 22 KOs), who produced the dramatic 2019 title victory as a replacement opponent for then-three-belt-champion Anthony Joshua, hasn’t fought since his September 2022 unanimous decision triumph over former title challenger Luis Ortiz at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

Ruiz, from Imperial, Calif., boosts the popularity of the card as he’ll attempt to better position himself, at age 34, to re-emerge as a contender to the likes of champions Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk in a division loaded with serious contenders.

Ruiz’s Aug. 3 opponent is reportedly former contender Jarrell "Big Baby" Miller (26-1-1, 22 KOs), who showed up very overweight for his Dec. 23 loss to Daniel Dubois in Saudi Arabia, meaning these two notoriously heavy men may combine to weigh more than 600 pounds on fight night.

Another possible fight that has been discussed for the card is a farewell bout for former three-division champion Abner Mares – a trilogy bout against his Los Angeles rival, four-division champion Leo Santa Cruz.

That match has yet to be finalized, three officials told BS Monday, and it’s possible that it will either take place later in the year or that just Santa Cruz will participate in the Aug. 3 card.

Santa Cruz (38-2-1, 19 KOs) told Boxing Scene last month that he is ready to fight again following a layoff dating to his February 2022 super featherweight victory over Keenan Carbajal.

WBA Rules Terence Crawford Can Maintain 147 Title Through Aug. 3 Bout

The World Boxing Association has confirmed that Terence Crawford (40-0, 30 KOs) will be allowed to retain his WBA welterweight title ahead of his pursuit of the organization’s junior middleweight crown in a matchup with Israil Madrimov (10-0-1, 7 KOs) on Aug. 3 at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles.

Crawford-Madrimov was officially confirmed by Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing and Turki Alalshikh, the chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, at a press conference in New York on Wednesday.

The Aug. 3 event will be Alalshikh’s first venture into boxing outside of Saudi Arabia.

Crawford currently holds three of the four world welterweight titles and had made no secret of his intentions to move up to super welterweight after the collapse of a contractually obliged rematch with Errol Spence Jr., whom Crawford beat last year to become undisputed champion.

Madrimov claimed the then-vacant title last month in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with a fifth-round stoppage of Magomed Kurbanov.

Jermell Charlo, the former undisputed champion at 154 pounds, previously held the WBA title. He was undisputed until last September, before his unsuccessful 168-pound title challenge of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, with the WBO stripping Charlo on the day of the fight.

The WBA officially stripped Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KOs) of the WBA title in March but still made him “champion in recess,” effectively giving Charlo the freedom to choose when to call for an immediate title opportunity for his old belt.

As reports circulated last week regarding Crawford’s upcoming contest with Madrimov, Charlo promoter Tom Brown wrote to the WBA explaining that his fighter would be returning at junior middleweight and that he was open to fighting Madrimov for his title.

After Wednesday’s confirmation of Crawford-Madrimov, the WBA published an official notice to clarify the situation at 154 pounds.

Crawford, if successful in claiming the WBA junior middleweight world title, will have five days to decide which weight class he wishes to continue in due to the rule prohibiting world titles being held in two separate weight classes.

The WBA also confirmed that the winner of Crawford-Madrimov would have to face the sanctioning body’s current mandatory challenger, Vergil Ortiz Jr. (20-0, 20 KOs).

Ortiz is scheduled to feature on the Crawford-Madrimov card against Tim Tszyu (24-1, 17 KOs), with the WBA interim junior middleweight title added to that fight as an extra bauble for the winner.

The WBA also ratified Charlo's status as “champion in recess” in the official resolution.

The resolution in full, published by the WBA:

"With the official announcement of the bout between Israil Madrimov and Terence Crawford, the World Boxing Association (WBA) Championships Committee issued a resolution on the special permission Crawford received to move up in class and the [junior middleweight] situation.

"Crawford, who is the [junior middleweight champion], will move up to the next division to challenge champion Madrimov on August 3, in Los Angeles. The American requested the permission to move up and keep the welterweight crown and the committee granted it provided that if he beats Madrimov he will have five days after the fight to make a decision about which title he will keep.

"On the other hand, Vergil Ortiz Jr., is the mandatory challenger of the category, and for that reason will be given the opportunity to dispute the interim belt against Australian Tim Tzsyu.

"Additionally, Jermell Charlo was ratified as champion in recess, the American will have the right to face the winner of Madrimov-Crawford or Madrimov in case that fight ends in a draw.

"The body formally informed all those involved in the situation, who are obliged to know the WBA rules. This resolution annuls all the previous ones while any situation that may arise will be resolved through the interpretation of the rules."

Good card so far.
If I'm being honest the opponent in the main event isn't what I expected, but they're making up for it on the undercard.

Hallelujah!

Andy Ruiz Jr is actually going to have a fight. :yay:

Miller is actually a decent test that Ruiz ought to be able to negotiate.

If he can't convincingly beat Miller, he might need to rethink his top flight credentials.
