Re: Hughie Fury Comeback Date Announced
makes sense. I think there is power there his style is just very cautious. He broke Sexton down so can do it. And whilst a domestic level opponent the only people to have stopped Sam were Price and Chisora. And Fury has a fantastic chin, he has never ever looked like being dropped despite fighting people like Pulev, Parker and Povetkin (the 3 P's if I may). I'd hope that gives him confidence to be less cautious but his father's training style does seem inherently defensive despite his words in the pre-fight build up about his son needing to be more forward.
He's out again in May and needs to stop the next opponent to be marketable, regardless of the opponent. And I hope he does. A healthy confident Fury could be dangerous.

I didn't see it but does he still throw every right hand like Freddie Flintoff? Apart from the generally negative style that always drives me insane

Re: Hughie Fury Comeback Date Announced
hughie just looked like hughie, with a more receded hair line than before. still plenty of fiddling, slappy jabs, and all the famous backward-sideways moment we love. ya the right hand is kinda weird, winds it back like out of a cartoon
hughie's been a perfectly reasonable euro level type and could give most a tricky night, but jeez its just not easy on the eyes

Re: Hughie Fury Comeback Date Announced
in tyson's early career, he was regulalry laying guys out. a few even completely iced. if you look at tyson's am career, he has loads of stoppages too. with tyson, the fiddly point scoring stuff came after - the kev johnson fight was the first i recall him doing it all fight. with hughie, it's always been his way and i dont think he's ever shown much power. the win over sexton is by far the exception, vs anyone else decent it's almost always points or some type of injury retirementSeanBrennan wrote: ↑22 Apr 2024, 16:58 do you think he could start being more stoppage-focused like Tyson became? I forgive it a bit as he's been out of the ring so long so banking some rounds was likely a goal too. I do think he is very talented still.
still 29 but he's had 30 fights and been in the game a long time, he didnt box any different than we're used to the other night and i doubt much will change
Re: Hughie Fury Comeback Date Announced
I don't know where he goes. If you were his promoter what would you even do with him?

Re: Hughie Fury Comeback Date Announced
i see what you mean, though id much rather allen fight babic or fisher. entertaining style clashes that allen would be live in. babic been hurt by lighter hitters than allen and is an erratic fighter in general. fisher not tested vs an iron man with some power yet.. there are some other hw prospects i would be interested in allen fighting too.
allen vs hughie i cant see anything other than hughie fiddling to a wide decision in a boring fight. the problem with hughie is that boring fight applies to pretty much all his outings, which leads to the question above of what do you do with him
he's not entertaining, not a looker, no charisma, he's good but not THAT good. biggest thing going for him is the fury name but the following hasnt caught on. cant really pay big bucks and opponents will get a frustrating unimpressive win at best.
maybe should pursue a specific abc title route vs cherrypicked guys to get into eliminators and a mandatory position
Re: Hughie Fury Comeback Date Announced
All the top heavies are old except Joshua and Parker.
Wouldn't be too surprising if we saw Wilder, Zhang, Fury, Ortiz, Uysk, Whyte and Joyce retired in the next 12 months.
That would probably be enough to put Hughie in the mix

Re: Hughie Fury Comeback Date Announced
true, although there's being in the mix like martin bakole is, a guy who is a capable fighter and on paper is ranked okay, but in reality is pretty much a non factor and is begging to get fights. in theory he's in the mix, but in reality not so much
then there's being in the mix as a guy who is getting good fights, fighting regularly at a solid level, closing in on a title shot, and/or has career momentum, etc. more like a parker, hrg/dub, zhang, whyte before his ban, etc
not sure a few retirements will default hughie to the second category, and so far, even against much older opponents than himself, has been unable to get the win at a level that would really force him near the top of the ladder

Re: Hughie Fury Comeback Date Announced
That isn't a negative. Freddie Flintoff is one of the biggest "what if's" in British boxing. He took the undefeated Richard Dawson apart during their match and showed great heart and determination to rise off the canvas to win. His lighting jab would have given any boxer nightmares and he staggered Dawson with every pop.
Re: Hughie Fury Comeback Date Announced
The best they can do with Hughie Fury is to push him towards the EBU title, he could win that and defend it a few times in soporific bouts in half-empty leisure centres then retire into obscurity at least able to call himself a European champion. He'll fall short in a World title challenge every single time, unless we end up with a vacant title situation where neither fighter is top level such as Martin vs. Glazkov...
Re: Hughie Fury Comeback Date Announced
He just doesn't sell as a headliner so should be on undercards and use the Fury name on the poster like everyone else. Most casuals will have no idea who he is seeing as he's been so inactive.
He'd do better building his name up among the public at British level again against Adeleye, Gorman, Fisher, Dacres, Ali, Allen. Clarke or Wardley for the belt if he's feeling confident, but unlikely to win.
His only chances at the European and commonwealth belts are if someone undeserving has found themselves holding it, like Zakhozhyi currently. Wins over the likes of Barriere, Browne, Opelu or Terzievski could get him a commonwealth opportunity but I think he loses to Wardley/Clarke for the belt. Kuzmin, Yoka, Ljungquist and Smakici are beatable and would get him a EBU shot which is more winnable.
Other options are a fight against someone like Chisora, hope he's past it, and hope he can stick and move against an very past it brawler. A big name and bigger money win not factoring in that they are past it.

I think he could win the European belt but they would drop it if they have to fight someone good. He didn't fight Whyte when mandatedjoshj909 wrote: ↑23 Apr 2024, 08:42 He just doesn't sell as a headliner so should be on undercards and use the Fury name on the poster like everyone else. I think he could too but as soon as someone like Kabayel, Dubois, Whyte, Hrgovic, Makhmudov etc are the opponent, he has no chance.wrighty wrote: ↑23 Apr 2024, 11:38I think he could win the European belt but they would drop it if they have to fight someone good. I actually think Hughie beats Clark
, in a dull at distance low activity chess match type bout.
But please don't make me watch it![[icon_e_sad.gif] :verysad:](./images/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif)

Hughie with a big step up in May. Fighting the 29th best HW in Germany, Patrick Korte. He drew with a fella who Bracamonte stopped.
He's in the top 300 in the world though. Number 300 to be precise.

Re: Hughie Fury Comeback Date Announced
Wonder how many warm ups he's going to take against guys ranked in the 100s. Given how long he's been out, you could understand a few before stepping up but he really needs a top 100 win, quickly followed by actually trying to beat a legit top 50 guy.

I agree mate
Re: Hughie Fury Comeback Date Announced
If you rewatch the Parker fight. He did just ok.
Not moved on for several years now. Bit of a waste really. Hope he’s made coin.

Re: Hughie Fury Comeback Date Announced
This is epitome of a "no win" choice of opponent - the guy has been stopped quick a number of times by fighters far less talented than Hughie. If he sparks him in under a minute no one cares. If he goes rounds Hughie gets slated.
