Matchroom wins Jaron Ennis vs Cody Crowley purse bid, targets July in Philadelphia

IBF welterweight champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis’ move to Matchroom is already proving lucrative, as Eddie Hearn and co. turned in a staggering $3.9 million offer at today’s purse bid for his ordered title defense against Cody Crowley.

As champion, Ennis (31-0, 28 KO) will be the beneficiary of an 85/15 split, meaning he’ll bank $3.315 million. Crowley (22-0, 9 KO) will receive the remaining $585,000, more than twice what he’d get if he proceeded with his WBC title eliminator against Souleymane Cissokho.

That’s assuming Crowley goes through with it at all, of course. He’s already turned down Ennis once before and has been incredibly unambitious since beating Kudratillo Abdudakhorov in 2021, beating faded vets Josesito Lopez and Abel Ramos in his two ring appearances.

If he does sign the dotted line, Eddie Hearn claims he’ll stage the fight this July in Philadelphia for “Boots’” first homecoming since his 2018 knockout of Raymond Serrano. Not a bad way to bounce back from the longest layoff of his professional career.

85-15 is rank for a mando.

I wonder if boots will get his entire 85 or if he just gets his contracted amount with Hearn.

3.3 million for someone only proper boxing fans know is a biggggg purse. If Hearn has to fork out 3.9 on this he could lose some cash…

Also why did Hearn bid so high? Haha, surely he knew the other bid wouldn’t be over 3 mill.

Matchroom Win Ennis-Crowley IBF Purse Bid

Jaron Ennis (31-0, 28 KOs) will make his Matchroom Boxing debut in Philadelphia after his new promotional team won the purse bid for his mandated IBF world welterweight title defense against Cody Crowley (22-0, 9 KOs).

Ennis was unveiled by Matchroom last week and they posted a successful bid of $3.9 million U.S. dollars, compared to TGB Promotions, who submitted a bid of $2 million and had been representing Crowley during the negotiation period.

The long-running talks between Ennis and Crowley ended after many delays and postponements. The IBF originally ordered the contest and negotiations to begin on January 31. Deadlines came and went to reach an agreement on March 1 and again on 19.

A further deadline of March 26 was also scrapped after TGB Promotions informed the IBF that “both sides reached an agreement” for the fight.

Ultimately, no agreement was reached and IBF champion Ennis decided to ink a multi-fight deal with Matchroom Boxing on April 10. The IBF also set a new date for the IBF purse bid between Ennis and Crowley based on Ennis’s new promotional agreement and arrangements.

Under the IBF rules, the champion is entitled to an 85 per cent split of the purse, which totals $3,323,500.

Crowley, rated No. 3 is entitled to a purse of $586,500.

Eddie Hearn, of Matchroom, spoke to their in-house media team and confirmed that he is targeting a possible date for July in Philadelphia.

“Purse bids were finally called, and we won it [the purse bid],” Hearn said. “We won the big purse bid today, so we are going to bring Boots [Ennis] home to Philadelphia.

“We are going to have a massive show incoming for Jaron Ennis in Philadelphia in July. It is time to bring this superstar home to his home city.

“There’ll be an announcement very soon about the venue, the confirmed date, and I am absolutely over the moon on being able to deliver that for Jaron.”

Jaron Ennis-Cody Crowley Set for Philadelphia's Wells Fargo Center on July 13

Jaron "Boots" Ennis will defend his welterweight title against Cody Crowley at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on Saturday, July 13, Matchroom Boxing announced Thursday.

In his first bout as a full titleholder, Ennis (31-0, 28 KOs) will return to his hometown to fight for the first time since November 2018. Ennis, 26, of Germantown, Pennsylvania, will have been out of the ring for a year by the time he faces Crowley, having most recently dispatched Roiman Villa by 10th-round KO in Atlantic City, New Jersey last July. In that fight, Ennis successfully defended his interim title before being elevated to full champion.

“I’m excited for my homecoming, especially being the first to fight at the Wells Fargo Center, the biggest arena in Philly,” Ennis said. “I can’t wait to show out and put on a beautiful, dominating, crushing performance in front of my family, friends and supporters while defending and retaining my IBF world title in spectacular fashion. I’m ready to step on any and everybody that’s in my way!”

Crowley (22-0 9 KOs), a 31-year-old, Las Vegas-based Canadian, will be getting his first shot at a world title against Ennis, returning to action following a win over Abel Ramos in Las Vegas in March 2023.

“Ten years ago, I arrived in Las Vegas with a dream of becoming world champion, unbroken by the sport,” Crowley said. “The only thing left to do is prove to the world in the City of Brotherly Love that I am an undefeated champion, my spirit is unbeatable and I will fight for those who are too scared to fight.

“I will become the greatest in the world for my dad – who I love and miss dearly – my home country of Canada and for world peace, so that others do not have to endure the same suffering. There is nothing anyone can do to break me. There is nothing I am not ready for. This next chapter is already written.”

Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn has made it clear since signing Ennis in April that he would make a priority of staging more of his fights in Philadelphia to build and benefit from the fighter's local following.

“I am thrilled to be able to deliver a homecoming defense for Boots,” Hearn said. “Jaron is the next American star in boxing, and sports stars with all the tools he has should be headlining in their own city.

“This is just the beginning for Jaron in Philadelphia, a town that absolutely loves their sport, and in Jaron they can boast that their hometown hero is the best in the business. July 13 is going to be a massive night; we can’t wait to come back to Philadelphia for the first of many epic nights with Boots.”

Ennis-Crowley will stream live on DAZN.

As the Philadelphia Inquirer points out, this marks the first boxing match at Wells Fargo Center since it opened in 1996.

Rooting for Crowley here. It's not entirely Ennis's fault but I'm tired of him already

I am suspecting this will be Ennis/Chukadzian again, as Cody won't play like his foil and Jaron could just be satisfied in playing catch on the elusive opponent

He needs to make a statement to not look like he is lucky because of boxing not knowing what to do with an unwanted phenom in Crawford

Press Release | Jalil Hackett-Peter Dobson, Skye Nicolson-Dyana Vargas to Support Jaron Ennis Card

Jalil Hackett will face Peter Dobson in a 10-round welterweight contest and Skye Nicolson will make the first defense of her featherweight title against Dyana Vargas on July 13 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, on the undercard of Jaron Ennis’ welterweight title defense against Cody Crowley.

Hackett (8-0, 7 KOs), who penned a multi-fight promotional deal with promoter Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing at the end of May, will be making a step up in his ninth pro fight against Dobson.

“I’m so happy to kick off my deal with Matchroom with such a big fight,” Hackett said. “Eddie and Matchroom have a plan for my development that I’m really excited by, and that starts on July 13 against Dobson. He took Conor Benn the distance in a good fight, but I’m going to prove that I am ready for this step up and much more.”

Dobson (16-1, 9 KOs), of the Bronx, New York, went 12 rounds with Benn in Las Vegas in February, which marked his first professional loss. At 34, Dobson has no time to lose – and he isn’t mincing any words about his approach to his fight with Hackett.

“He’s a little boy, and I’m going to beat his ass like his father used to,” Dobson said. “He’s trying to use me as a stepping stone and he’s making a terrible mistake. There are levels to this, and he’s nowhere near mine. He’s going to find that out in brutal fashion come July 13.”

Nicolson (10-0, 1 KO) won her WBC crown at a canter in her first title fight in February in Las Vegas, pitching a shutout on two of the cards over Dane Sarah Mahfoud. For her first defense, Australia’s Nicolson will fight in the States for the fifth time as a pro.

“I’m excited to defend my WBC world title on this great card in Philadelphia,” Nicolson said. “Although it’s just my 11th fight, I truly believe I am the best featherweight in the world.

For her part, the Dominican Republic’s Vargas (18-1, 12 KOs) will be fighting outside her homeland and in a title fight for the first time.

“Ever since I started boxing, this was my dream – to fight for a world title,” Vargas said. “It is a dream come true, and I'm taking advantage of this opportunity.”

Also on the undercard, light heavyweight Khalil Coe will make the short journey from New Jersey to Philadelphia to fight for his first title, facing Manuel Gallegos over 10 rounds.

Coe (8-0-1, 6 KOs) has ended his last four outings inside the distance, and will look to earn a minor belt against Mexico’s Gallegos (20-2-1, 17 KOs), who is moving up to 175 pounds after taking on super middleweight Diego Pacheco last time out in Los Angeles in July.

“I am excited to be back in a big step-up fight against Gallegos on the ‘Boots’ Ennis undercard,” Coe said. “Philadelphia will almost be like a hometown fight for me. It’s right down the turnpike, so I expect a lot of my fans to show up and watch me dominate again, and I’m looking for a highlight-reel knockout.”

Said Gallegos: “I’m anxious to fight again on a Matchroom show in a new division, and for a title. I feel stronger and won’t waste this opportunity. Let’s go.”

In an all-Puerto Rico affair, Henry Lebron and Christopher Diaz will square off in a junior lightweight bout. Lebron (19-0, 10 KOs), who has signed a promotional deal with Matchroom, should face a stern test against two-time title challenger Diaz (28-4, 18 KOs).

“I am very excited to be entering this new chapter of my career with Matchroom Boxing,” Lebron said. “I feel that Matchroom is going to provide me with the path towards challenging and winning my first world title as a super featherweight.”

Said Diaz: “Facing an undefeated fighter – and one of the best, or the best, prospects in Puerto Rico, like Henry Lebron – is the kind of challenge that brings passion and determination to my mind.”

Elsewhere on the card, Philadelphia duo Christian Carto (22-1, 15 KOs) and Boots Promotions’ Ismail Muhammad (4-0, 3 KOs) will be in action in separate fights, in a scheduled junior featherweight eight-rounder and a welterweight six-rounder, respectively. Another Philly native, Dennis Thompson, will make his pro debut in a four-round bantamweight fight against an opponent to be determined.
