Just because someone is a loyal reader still does not entitle them to know exactly why an editor leaves a publication. By all means discuss the topic. As you say it is a forum for debate, but why Matt left is his business.
You’re obsessed. Why are you so keen for Matt to be protected. And protected from what? Sounds like maybe Christie was caught in a compromising position with yourself, a bag of Charlie and a goat and you want it kept quiet. Boxing news is public property and its loyal readers have every right to know why its editor is leaving.
You need to get out more. Boxing News, public property? Just because someone reads a sports magazine, does not give them the right to chapter and verse on the editor's decision to resign.
It’s odd there are a couple of very aggressive / defensive posts here by a couple of posters. And pushing the ‘it’s personal’ aspect… it’s almost like these posters know the real reason (and possibly friends of Matt’s) and are desperate to stop conversation. Very odd. So what’s the real reason? A drink problem possibly? Cocaine? He’s becoming trans? (Christie does seems absolutely obsessed by womens boxing   not to mention is creepy looking… ) The vague interest in why he’s left, which is completely understandable really doesn’t justify the angry responses 🤔

It's a pity Christie has moved on, I think he was the best editor since Harry Mullan but it's his life, and good luck to him, I'll be interested to see what he does next.

The new editor has an immediate chance to nail his anti drugs flag to the mast, given Garcia's failed tests. Be interested to see the tone next week.

Creepy looking? This is troubling, I got mistaken once for Matt Christie by Harry Holland. I'm going to need to review my moisturizer.

One other thing that I really like, a new page with the major fight schedule.

As for the boxing show podcast, it's a miss for me. I know I'm in the minority but I can't stomach Andy Clarke and that YouTube bloke is a bit marmite

I've added the new opening bell one and really hope it continues. Steedman and Christie are a great pairing in that format

veriton wrote: 03 May 2024, 00:46 Loving the new look, new feel Boxing News under the new editor.

Stunning cover design, also feels thicker paper on the cover so a better feel. It's a bold start that really does feel different.

Butcher's first Editor's Letter details his history with BN and working with the legendary Harry Mullan. I love the fact he's stamped his boxing credentials straight away.

I also like the full pages for the history and ex boxers features. They had felt a bit squeezed before.

Christie did an excellent job but Butcher seems the right man to take BN onwards.
Yes same here plus the schedule page. Good refresh.

I like that addition too. One tweak I'd love to see is the smaller hall cards featured on that page, especially where they are streamed like Black Country Promotions, would help promote them, BCP do so many and make a real effort so would love to see them and others get some publicity.

Andy Clarke is a no for me too.

Yep, enjoyed this week's issue - agree re. the major fight schedule + nice intro by Butcher, though feels like a few tweaks rather than a redesign. Black and white cover would normally be a no-no for a consumer mag, but I've got no idea what BN's split is now between newsstand and subscriptions, so potentially far less important an issue than in the past.
I'm the same as you re. the podcast so I've also stuck with the Opening Bell.
The one thing that seemed a glaring error in this week's issues was omitting Canelo from the list of Mexico's greatest ever fighters. Ironic given that the feature was clearly only running to tie in with his Cinco de Mayo fight this weekend. Throws up memories as had probably the best weekend of my life in Vegas for the Khan-Alvarez fight 8 years ago!

This probably marks me out as a dinosaur but I only look online for boxing results not articles. I much prefer sitting with a paper copy with everything in it. If it isn't in BN then I'm not really fussed.

Matt Christie was an excellent, excellent editor in my opinion. He toed the fine line between his love of boxing and seeing all its shortfalls. Best of luck to Mark Butcher, I'm sure he will do well!

I go one further, I avoid the results until I can read it in the magazine!

What’s going on with the opening bell podcast. Thu night and this week’s still hasn’t dropped

Alex seemed very keen to let everyone know that he understood that people are facing hard times financially and so if you didn’t wanna cough up yet more money to get the “bonus” Patreon episodes then hey no problem

So this week they rush out a 5 v 5 reaction pod on the Monday for subscribers and for the rest of us nothing.

PS - question for Deserter - for how long have you read BN given your view of Matt as the best editor ever? I'm not asking that to denigrate Matt in any way as it is an incredibly hard job whoever is doing it, and he has kept the magazine going through Covid, for which point alone he deserves our gratitude and congratulations. For reasons too dull/lengthy to go into, I have read through all issues since about 1947 to the present, so am just interested in your criteria for rating editors.
That is epic that you have read so many editions. Not dull at all do please share if you are able to.
OK! I've bought it weekly since the late 1980s. Covered all of the issues from 1974 onwards when researching my Kirkland Laing biog many years back, along with the amateur section from the mid 60s. Then in more recent years have read the issues from 1947 to 1979 (currently) while researching for my next book on various excellent Gold Coasters / Ghanaians from the early 1950s to early 1970s (aiming to publish in 2027, long story...).

Don't know what other subscribers think but the quality has fallen off a cliff in the last few weeks. Other than Buncie, Worsell and Dec Taylor, it's almost unreadable.

I’m still enjoying it . I’m not from a publication world but to me it seems to have an old fashioned magazine look. More to read. With an old fashioned style front page large header.

Not enough for me. I see the magazine in am gyms regularly, young kids over the moon to see their name in, etc. I don't think I've ever seen a casual with a copy.
