Leigh Wood

Post by Noxy »

Any news on the wildly exciting Leigh Wood? I thought Matchroom would have sorted something out for him by now. It seems to have gone all quiet around him.

I would have thought Joe Cordina at 130 would have made sense but evidently not everyone agrees.

Last I heard the Warrington rematch was all but sorted. Then ... nothing. It's a bit strange.

He's done a few 'evening with' shows of late, which I suspect were a tad less enthralling than his fights. And rather less well attended as the seat filler site I use was full of offers.

It's decidedly odd that there's no City Ground event in the offing.

Has he Felix Cashed it?

They couldn’t do the City Ground because the only weekend Forest could do would have clashed with Fury/Usyk so was a nonstarter.

Wood’s a free agent. Apparently they were trying to get the Warrington fight over the line but haven’t been able to get deals done as yet.

When you say Felix Cashed it are you referring to online speculation that Cash failed a test with no actual evidence other than inactivity?

it has become a worrying speculative trend that we equate inactivity with PED failure. Sadly understandable though, the cloud of cynicism has real roots.

the evidence isnt really there to be sure about the shadow bans, but hughie fury in particular my suspicions are up

i can see why people are suspicious about cash. he trained closely with a confirmed ped cheat, and a shady 'strength and conditioning' guy. once all the ped controversy hit he had a massive drop in form from a few years back. that said i know the cash had a lot of nasty sh!t going on in his life and also got covid. all that can f@ck with your form and your desire to fight. maybe he spent time away needing to clear his head. maybe it really is just injury. im as cynical as the next but id still give him the benefit of the doubt

but the hughie fury situation to me is more questionable. gets on sky and starting to get some push, then is suddenly gone for 3 years. unlike cash, no report of personal turmoil, any injury talk of his is always super vague, and he also has a previous ped history

now, leigh wood, no way we should be rushing to ped ban judgement already, it's only been like 6 months since he last fought

Good post this, all valid points. I really like Wood, I think I'd cry if he ever popped for PEDs!

any news or rumours for when Wood is fighting next?

can't wait for a night out in Nottingham, for another fight of the year candidate.

surely he's moving up in weight. he was being linked speculatively for a fight with Emanuel Navaratte, but the Mexican volume puncher has since moved up to lightweight. that would've been a wonderful test due to his mixed results vs Lara.

the Warrington rematch would have been bad news, to boil down in weight for another gruelling fight. that's playing with fire even though he holds a world title.

cheers. so he's resting from the gruelling run of fights, and awaiting the best world title opportunity at a higher weight then.

such tremendous fights he's been in, from defeats to Gavin McDonnell, Jazza Dickens and Mauricio Lara, to stoppage wins over David Oliver Joyce, Xu Can, Michael Conlan and Josh Warrington.

sounds good, as I believe both have trouble making feather and the fight they had was a cracker.

would it be more likely to land in Nottingham or Leeds?

one issue for me is, I'm not sure I'd buy a ticket for another Warrington fight, as he seems happy to mar the fights with repeated head butts (like the fight he had during covid, when very few events were on. it just seemed such a waste). although I've enjoyed attending years ago (e.g. exciting clash vs Amagasa).

Was hoped for the city ground but can't get the venue now. Guessing either Leeds or Manchester if it happens

Apparently not. Something to do with the timing of a new pitch being put down.
