but,

-Connor ben vs algeri, dobs, van heerden 3 star
-kongo vs mckinson or ekow 3 star.

There are legit world world world class heavyweight fights that the algorithim is evaluating as less than brittish levle welterweight fights.
The only change in new ratings version is a damping factor for older bouts. This seems to show most impact to the heavyweights. The heavyweights seem to have lived from relatively old results compared with the welterweights.

Historically fights are suffering... Ali's highest rated bout is 3 stars...

The rating points level reached differs from time period to time period. The 60s, 70s, 80s showed a low of about 10000 bouts per year. Today we have about 20000 bouts per year. The 30s showed a high of about 30000 bouts per year.

Is that explained anywhere? There's no context to these stars across time.
Besides, it's still extremely unbelievable to have Ali's greatest fights only at 3.
I highly suggest adjusting the bout numbers to be in context with the time period they're in.
As it stands, fighters are punished or inflated based on factors out of their control (time)

The rating point limits for the stars are related to the current ratings. See https://boxrec.com/wiki/index.php/BoxRe ... escription

It would be possible to determine the ratings point limits for the stars for past time periods too - and to adapt the stars corresponding to the time depending values.

But currently the BoxRec ratings focus in on the current ratings. Maybe such an adaption will be added later.

It seems like WHR is kind of chaotic, in that a small change in initial conditions (the "dummy" bouts?) creates a large change down the line

Hi Martin, why is this upcoming bout between #1 and #3 only rated as 2 stars? Seems weird to me:

It wasn't a change in dummy bouts, it was a new damping factor for older bouts. And with the current release update it was a reduced implementation of that factor. And yes, the ratings are very sensible to any parameter changes. But that is due to very insufficient competition in pro boxing compared with other pro sports as soccer, tennis and golf.

It simply is a bug :-). Should be done with next complete ratings run tomorrow.

It was even simpler, no division was assigned, so heavyweight was assumed. Now I corrected it to super flyweight ... :TU:

There is a discussion in the Current Scene forum
viewtopic.php?p=6011994#p6011994

The BoxRec p4p ratings are simply a comprehensive collection of all divisional ratings, where the points are multiplied by a division depending factor.

I can simply reduce that factor and then get those ratings for the top100 p4p boxers:

Code: Select all

  1 Welterweight 447121 Terence Crawford US 158.6 5.4 1

Where's the logic in multlplying by a division depending factor?
The BoxRec WHR rating of a boxer is equivalent to his absolute fighting strength deducted from bout results. Obviously a heavyweight tends to have has more fighting power than a minimumweight boxer - due to more power (related to weight) and range (related to height). That is reflected by the BoxRec WHR ratings showing higher ratings for higher weight divisions.

p4p ratings try to represent a boxer's rating in relation to the relative fighting power of a division. So this can be accomplished by using a division factor increasing with descending division weight.

By analysing fight results of matched boxers from different weight divisions, I found in the past, that the fighting strength of the boxer is about in proportion to the 3rd or 2nd power of his weight. Currently BoxRec uses the 3rd power of the weight as a conversion factor. But here I used the 2nd power of the weight.

You can simply deduct the 'fighting strength' from the results, Of course heavyweights have more power than minimumweights, but not compared to the opponents they have to face. Otherwise, you might as well punish the smaller fighters for only having fought light hitters with short arms.

I think the outcome of the current approach shows that it's not the right formula for P4P rankings.

The reason the different weights have to be graded a bit different is for when people move through divisions I believe.

Then you try to undo that to make a p4p list I guess.

Heavyweights also face opponents who are more resilient and hit harder. Lighter weights have shorter reaches and less punching power so should there be consideration for that too? I understand the need for a weightclass formula but I think too much emphasis has been put on strength here. Usyk is unanimously top 10, that should be your yardstick when trying to work out the ratio given to each weightclass.

The algorithm doesn't change any weight class. That is to the editors.
