Hi. Looking for some help my son who is 11 is looking to start boxing.there are a few gyms near us how do we find out which gyms are better than others or are the all about the same. Thanks

Give them all a try, it's about enjoyment too, depends which one he likes best.
Sometimes good gyms with more successful boxers don't have so much time to nurture beginners

Best to pick a few and see which one he likes best, and where he likes to go more

Each gym will have some decent lads and decent trainers but a different way of doing things, whichever one he gets on with best would be the way to go

There’s nothing stopping a young lad from trying them all. If the coaches/owners in one are funny about him trying another gym then that’s probably one to avoid.



It’s very important that they have a load of random countries flags on the walls

Find a gym that’s got a rep for teaching technique and pushes light / technical sparring over a gym that’s all about tear ups.

Make sure you watch the training session for each gym, if your boys never been around it he won’t know what’s good and what’s not. Some coaches in amateur gyms are kind hearted but clueless when it comes to teaches the art of boxing it’s up to you to look out for that

be good if you can find a gym where there are at least a few kids his age there too

At his age find one thats got a lot of other kids his own age , early its all about FUN has well has learning and a good coach /gym will ensure both happens

A boxer with no knowledge or experience of what to expect is rarely in a position to assess coaching methods.
