Daniel Jacobs returns against Shane Mosley Jr on Diaz vs Masvidal undercard

Daniel Jacobs fights for the first time in over two years on July 6

Former middleweight titleholder Daniel Jacobs will fight for the first time in over two years on Saturday, July 6, facing Shane Mosley Jr on the undercard of the Nate Diaz vs Jorge Masvidal boxing rematch.

The fight will be set for 10 rounds at super middleweight.

Jacobs, now 37, has not fought since a controversial loss to John Ryder in London in Feb. 2022, and really hasn’t looked like a contender at any point in this decade. His 2020 win over Gabriel Rosado was also plenty questionable, and other than that he hasn’t fought since 2019, when he lost to Canelo Alvarez then beat a totally disinterested and way overweight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr when Chavez simply quit after five rounds.

Jacobs (37-4, 30 KOs) could be looking to launch an actual comeback at 168 lbs, or could just be making some money, we’ll see how he actually fights.

Of course, in the lead-up, it’s an actual comeback bid.

“I can’t wait to get back in the ring and do what I love most,” said Jacobs. “I’ve been training and I feel rejuvenated and ready to make another run to the top. This is a great opportunity on a big platform, and I’m coming to make the most of it. I’ve got a great opponent, but don’t blink, because I’m preparing to end this fight in style.”

Mosley (21-4, 12 KOs) has had an unusual path as a second-generation fighter. He barely had an amateur career at all and certainly wasn’t bred from his early youth to be a star in the sport, and had early pro setbacks that would generally discourage someone who was just doing it to do it.

Instead of bowing out on any reality checks, he’s shown a lot of grit and desire to be a fighter, bouncing back from his defeats and hanging around as a tough pro at middleweight and super middleweight. At the moment, he’s won four straight fights. He’s not someone who will make it easy for Jacobs, and we really have no idea what Jacobs has left in the tank at this point, either.

Danny is a favorite of mine. I wish he would just retire. I hope that this is not due to an economic crisis.

Seems like a bit of a short notice. Maybe not so much for Mosley, he fought in December but Jacobs had one fight in three and a half years. And that was in February 2022. So I guess he desperately needs money and is just using his name to get paid as an opponent.

Jacobs points, I voted KO by mistake. If Jacobs has anything left he'll pull out a messy points win as he's been inactive.

If it isn’t an obvious UD they will give it to Mosley Jr., same as his last loss.

When I first read the title, I thought it might be an exhibition, not an actual fight.

Shane Mosely Jr.: "I Got in This Game for Me"

“I’m already standing alone, man,” Mosley Jr. said. “I’m appreciative of my dad. I love him. I thank him for everything that I have. I thank him for my mindset. I thank him for the life that he's given me, I thank him for everything. He's responsible for a lot and luckily he was in my life and he was able to show me that a man could do great things when he put his mind to it. And all those are great things, but I stand alone, baby. I did this all myself, by myself. I got into this game for me. I got into this because I love this sport and I love what I do. And I want to make a legacy and a life in this of my own.”

“I got the call to fight either Carlos Adames or Danny Jacobs,” Mosley Jr. said. “Guess who I said? Danny Jacobs. Because guess what? If I go to a crowd of people and say, ‘Hey, I'm fighting Carlos Adames,’ they go, ‘Who’s that?’ If I go, ‘Hey, I'm about to fight Danny Jacobs,’ they go, ‘Oh, really? You about to fight Danny Jacobs?’ So who do I want to fight? Yeah, one is middleweight champion of the world. But one is a legend.”

“It's the mentality – it’s not just speed, power, whatever they possess [physically],” Mosley Sr. said. “It's actually the mentality and how they approach the fight.

“You can see that his mind is a lot different from most of the other fighters. He has a different mindset, and he's ready to be the world champion. He’s ready to be a great fighter.”

“He's already a legend,” Mosley Jr. said. “And if I come out victorious, I did my best … I gained that experience, I gained that knowledge, 100 percent, how do you not become better? How do you not become more after that?”

That's a weird mindset. It doesn't paint him in the light he thinks it does. Show some ambition Junior!

He'll be 34 this year.
He should take any title shot he gets if he wants to be champ before the end of his career...

Just watched the "highlights".
Garbage highlights and from those 2 min it looked like a glorified sparring session.

Jacobs looked like sh!t, which was sad to see. Crazy to think him and Usyk are the same age.
42 year old GGG would smoke him.

Seems like Mosley Jr. wants Lara next.
And even though he is ancient, I'd still favor 41 year old Lara to beat him..

To my knowledge Usyk has never battled the C word.
Anybody who thinks that opponent didn't take something from Jacobs is delusional.
The C word doesn't always take everything but it always has a toll.

jacobs had cancer before hitting his top performances, whatever it took he still had enough to be levels above mosley jr for most of his career. clearly just a shell now. he's lost even more since the john ryder fight, where he was faded but still had some speed and movement

dj even from chavez would've beat jr handily. prime dj wins 10-0, if not stoppage

I was responding to the Usyk and Jacobs being the same age comment.

Age, skill, opponents......... are all nice things to talk about but dealing with the C word automatically tells us that person has more limits on their future than any person who didn't have it.
We always knew Jacobs was going to decline quickly.
The C word has a way of doing that.
He was/is fortunate to have comeback at all, let alone reach world class level for a time.
