Fair enough we get this great site & use of the forum completely gratis so it needs to be paid for somehow and advertising revenue is the obvious way.

BUT.. The noisy pop ups are irritating and a half....

I guess you can't begrudge advertising, but the smilie ads really are bad.

I don't know whether to give my #1 hated to the "MUHAAAHAAA...oh behave" one or the one that starts "heellllooooo" in the style of the Pet Shop Boy's "heellllllooooo spaceboys."

I have not seen the fart button or I would most certainly have pressed it long ago. Thing is if you download these smileys they just load spyware and popups and all that shite.

For a safer, much more relaxed (and much lower-bandwidth) internet browsing experience, I recommend doing the following 3 things:

1) Disable JavaScript in your browser;
2) Disable Image Rendering in your browser;
3) Block Popups in your browser.

(Note that if your browser doesn't offer option (3), doing (1) will take care of most of the popups anyway).

In Firefox, these are all easily accessible via checkboxes in the same Tools->Options->Content menu.

I only re-enable JavaScript (and even more rarely, image display) for the few sites I visit (e.g. online banking) that absolutely need it. Content over form for this websurfer...

That one that goes "Helllooooooooooooooo Helloooooooooo" is the bane of my dog's existance. It is the Leonard to his Duran, the Lewis to his Bowe, the Margarito to anyone weighing 147-154 pounds.
