What happened to Billy Hamm? (Cus D'Amato protege)

Post by Controversial »

This popped up on YouTube, Billy Hamm aged 10 at the time and seen as a prospect being trained by Cus and Teddy Atlas. The youngest fighter Cus trained apparently. Cus said to be aged 73 in the video so this would've been around 1981. You can see the same Tyson style. Hamm would be in his early 50's now, anyone know what happened to him?

It's intriguing to see the influence of the same style seen in Tyson's training. As per the information provided, this would've been around 1981, given Cus D'Amato's age of 73 at that time. It's interesting to note that Billy Hamm would now be in his early 50s.

Regrettably, I don't have specific information regarding Billy Hamm's current whereabouts or recent activities. However, you may find more details about him through boxing forums, historical boxing records, or by reaching out to individuals knowledgeable about the boxing community. Additionally, consider searching for updates on social media platforms or dedicated boxing websites to find the latest information about Billy Hamm.

is it spelt with two "m' s or just one.
In Teddy atlas autobiography he mentioned
that he stuck around Catskill to train the Catskill Boxing team,
( they won 6 out of 7 in the Adrionick Golden Gloves tournament
even tho Atlas had stopped training Mike Tyson.
so i'm guessing Teddy Atlas was still in Catskills in 1983.

Been trying to research some info concerning the Catskill Boxing Club.
In 1960, the old Thorpe Victorian Mansion (9 bedrooms on 10 acres)
was sold to Camille for 'one dollar"
Cus D'Amato moved there in 1970 from Rhinebeck New York ( from training Buster Mathis)
Kevin Rooney moved up to Catskills in early 1975.
Teddy Atlas arrived in October 1975
(population then 19,000)

Teddy Atlas became the trainer for the Catskill Boxing Club
from 1977-1981.
( He left Catskill in November 1982)

In Teddy Atlas's 2006 autobiography.
He thanks Mane More and Gary Young in the credits at the back.
( they made good)
wonder what happened to all the other members of the 1981
Catskill boxing Club too ? (other then Mike Tyson of course)

I went down a Damato rabbit hole trying to figure this out. I always figured he was a small cult leader the way he sequestered troubled young men and lived with them.

Anyways i found one guy who was around the time bill hamm was fighting for cus. Hes a local level politician. I will ask him and see if he responds

remember reading back in 1961, that Cus D'Amato contacted a real estate agent,
to find an isolated island somewhere off the coast of upstate New York.
also sometime in the 1960's he had a log cabin near Killskill New York.
I think he was trying to get away from the "Norris people".
not sure if he had a training camp in Killskill.

I'm guessing as Hamm was so young at that time he just lost interest in boxing, not unusual for that to happen.

someone should do a 'class of 1981" documentary of the Catskill Boxing Club.
that would be interesting to know what became of them all.
1981 was really the last year of the late 1970's.
1982 brought in crack and stuff like that.

That's not the Tyson style, it's the peek a boo style that Cus created and Floyd Patterson and Mike Tyson used to earn their world titles. I too saw this video pop up recently and was wondering the same thing though.

wonder if he quit boxing, due to the fact that he was the focus at the Catskill Boxing Club and then media spot-light had changed from him to Mike Tyson there
sometime in 1982 ?

wonder what became of Frankie Minicelli ?
He was on the same Catskill Boxing Club team as Billy Hamm in 1980-1981.
He was also Mike Tyson's roommate at the Victorian Mansion.
