Subriel Matias-Liam Paro IBF Title Fight In Advanced Talks For This Summer In Puerto Rico

Boxing Scene has learned that advanced talks are in place for Matias to enter a voluntary IBF junior welterweight title defense versus Australia’s Liam Paro. The bout is not quite finalized but is tentatively targeted to take place in early summer at a location to be determined in Matias’ native Puerto Rico.

Sources with intimate knowledge of talks have informed Boxing Scene that Paro (24-0, 15 KOs) unconditionally signed for what would be his first major title fight. Matias has tentatively agreed to terms. However there remains a lingering issue of whether his team—headed by manager and local promoter Juan Orengo’s Fresh Productions—is willing to commit to a promotional contract with Matchroom Boxing, who currently promotes Paro.

El Nuevo Dia was the first to report that Matias-Paro was in play.

Should the bout move forward, it will mark the second title defense for Matias (20-1, 20 KOs) and his fifth unbeaten opponent in a span of his last six fights. The exception during that period is Petros Ananyan, whom Matias stopped after nine rounds in their January 2022 rematch to avenge his lone career defeat from nearly two years prior.

Matias’ ten-round points loss to Ananyan marked the first of six consecutive fights under an agreement with Premier Boxing Champions (PBC). He was on the free agent market last year following his fifth-round stoppage of Jeremias Ponce to win the IBF 140-pound title last February. There were serious talks of Matias joining Matchroom at the time but he was persuaded to remain with PBC for one more fight.

It resulted in a nine-month gap between fights and ended with Matias forcing mandatory challenger Shohjahon Ergashev to quit on his stool after five rounds last November 25 in Las Vegas.

Paro was previously on track to challenge then-WBC titlist Regis Prograis but was forced to withdraw due to a slight tear in his left Achilles tendon one month out from their June 24 date in New Orleans. It was the second straight fight he was forced to cancel due to injury; a facial fracture during a training camp gone horribly wrong saw the Brisbane native pulled from a planned clash with Robbie Davies last March 11 in Liverpool.

The run of bad luck left Paro out of the ring since an October 2022 first-round knockout of countryman Brock Jarvis in South Brisbane. He returned last December 9, where he impressed in a sixth-round knockout of Montana Love on the Devin Haney-Regis Prograis DAZN Pay-Per-View in San Francisco.

Matias has not fought on his native island since a November 2019 knockout win over Jonathan Jose Eniz in his Fajardo hometown.

Not so fast. Liam Paro may upset the apple cart here. This dude is really at that level. Paro is a well-schooled and seasoned boxer. Not ur typical Aussie import. He has been sparring in the US for a few years. Timing, balance, power, movement, handspeed he has it. I would not be surprised if he drops Matias. I think Paro need to get Matias attention early then he can box him comfortably when Matias is not just boring in.

That Brock Jarvis fight was odd, as Jarvis seemed to go up like 4 weights in only a few fights

SUBRIEL MATIAS-LIAM PARO BACK IN PLAY, EYED FOR JUNE IN PUERTO RICO

Subriel Matias is right back where he started in his quest for a homecoming title fight.

The Ring has confirmed that Puerto Rico’s Matias is in advanced talks to next face Australia’s Liam Paro. Once finalized, the attractive matchup will take place in Manati, roughly 90 minutes west of Matias’ hometown of Fajardo, P.R.

ESPN.com boxing insider Mike Coppinger was the first to report renewed talks between the pair of hard hitting 140-pounders.

Matias (20-1, 20 knockouts), No. 3 at 140, will defend his IBF junior welterweight title. He won the belt via fifth-round knockout of unbeaten Jeremias Ponce last Feb. 25 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He then forced undefeated mandatory challenger Shohjahon Ergashev to quit on his stool after five rounds last November 25 in Las Vegas.

The latter bout was his last under Premier Boxing Champions (PBC), with whom he signed in 2020. He remained with Juan Orengo’s Fresh Productions, who entered a co-promotion with Matchroom Boxing earlier this year. The union was made, in part, to finalize the fight versus Paro at the time.

Paro (24-0, 15 KOs) initially agreed to all terms. The fight seemed to advance once Matias agreed to sign with Matchroom. However, Paro’s team opted out of the matchup over a compensation discrepancy.

Matias and Matchroom spent the next month in talks with nearly every ranked IBF 140-pound contender. The closest to moving on came with expressed interest from Elvis Rodriguez, a Dominican contender who trains in Hollywood under Hall of Fame cornerman Freddie Roach. Rumors were rampant first of a potential bout, then false claims that Matias turned down Rodriguez.

Much closer to the truth was that Paro, who is co-promoted by Matchroom, returned to the table. The unbeaten Aussie was always the first choice for the assignment. As much was proven when his team agreed to re-enter talks with one of the sport’s most frightening punchers.

Matias has knocked out every opponent he has faced as a pro. His lone fight to go the distance was in a Feb. 2020 points loss to Petros Ananyan in Las Vegas. Matias avenged his lone career defeat with a ninth-round stoppage in their Jan. 2021 rematch in Uncasville, Connecticut. The feat was part of his current five-fight win and knockout streak, all inside of nine rounds.

Brisbane’s Paro was in line to challenge then-WBC 140-pound titlist Regis Prograis (29-2, 24 KOs), No. 5 at 140, last June 17 in New Orleans. Those plans fell through when he suffered an Achilles tendon tear, his second straight fight canceled due to injury. Paro previously suffered a facial fracture while in training to face Robbie Davies last March 11 in Liverpool.

An actual fight came last December 9. Paro knocked out Montana Love in the sixth round on the Devin Haney-Regis Prograis DAZN Pay-Per-View undercard from San Francisco. The win was his first since an Oct. 2022 1st round knockout of undefeated countryman Brock Jarvis in South Brisbane.

Matias has not fought on his native island since a November 2019 knockout win over Jonathan Jose Eniz in his Fajardo hometown. The promise of a homecoming was a key part in Fresh Productions agreeing to bring Matchroom into the fold.

Should the fight land in Manati, it will mark the first-ever major title fight held in the coastal city. It is located less than 20 minutes from Barceloneta, the birthtown of the late Hall of Fame legend Sixto Escobar, Puerto Rico’s first world champion.

LIAM PARO READY TO PUT SUBRIEL MATIAS’ WEAK SPOTS TO THE TEST IN 140-POUND TITLE BOUT

There’s a lot to like about Subriel Matias.

The 32-year-old Puerto Rican powerhouse has belted, bludgeoned and bashed his way to the IBF title at 140-pounds, claiming 20 scalps inside the distance in his 21-fight pro career.

The one blemish on his ledger? A close points loss to Petros Ananyan after climbing off the canvas in the seventh round on the undercard of the rematch between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder in 2020. The rematch two years later? A nine-round beatdown of the only opponent to defeat him.

That’s why Matias has been dubbed the most dangerous man in boxing.

Most people run away from danger. A rare few run towards it.

You can count Liam Paro amongst their ilk.

“I’m excited for it,” the 28-year-old Australian southpaw told The Ring from his training camp in Miami, Florida after his final sparring session on Thursday.

“He’s the most avoided fighter not just in boxing, but in the sport I believe. The vibes are good over here in Florida. I’ve been here for five weeks now and I’m finishing off the tail end of camp.

“It’s a good feeling to be a week away, to be nine days away from a dream that I’ve had since a young kid.

“Everything’s been good, there’s good people around and good vibes, so I’m ready to shock the world.”

The climate has been good for Paro too.

“It’s like a Queensland summer over here, it’s felt like home. It’s another slice of familiarity,” the Mackay native, now of Brisbane, said.

“It’s been good, it’s been really good. We couldn’t have had a better camp. Honestly, I say this every time, but this one has just molded together. It’s been unreal.

“We’ve really put in the hard yards as we always do, but knowing the extra task ahead and what’s on the line, we’re ready. We’re more than ready.

“You can expect to see best Liam Paro yet. I believe in myself. I always rise to every occasion. This is the top of the tree. This is it. It doesn’t get any bigger than this.”

Paro (24-0, 15 KOs) will challenge Matias (20-1, 20 KOs), currently rated at No.2 by The Ring at junior welterweight, at the Coliseo Juan Aubin Cruz Abreu in Manati, Puerto Rico on June 15. Paro is currently unrated.

The fight will be the second defense of the IBF junior welterweight title Matias won against Jeremias Ponce in February last year. Ponce retired on his stool before the start of the sixth round after being dropped late in the previous frame, unable to continue the battle against the busy, heavy-handed Matias.

Shohjahon Ergashev suffered a similar fate in his challenge to Matias in November. The Uzbek southpaw entered the fight with a reputation as a puncher himself after winning 20 of his previous 23 fights by knockout. Ergashev thought he could out-punch the puncher and for the first three rounds, he had some success. But ultimately, it proved to be a mirage.

Matias pummeled him to a mid-round stoppage. Ergashev didn’t answer the bell to start the sixth.

Victories like this only add to the myth of Matias. But Paro thinks the one-sided nature of his wins flatters to deceive.

“We know what Matias brings to the table,” he said. “He’s got one style and we don’t believe he’s going to veer off from that. We’re going to bring angles, fast feet and good footwork, but if he wants to get down and dirty, we can do that too.

“I don’t take anything away from him. His record speaks for itself. He’s a tremendous champion and he’s a champion for a reason. But I think people prepare the wrong way for Matias, they come in with the wrong game plan. As you know, he gets hit a lot, so they’re emptying their tanks early. We’re ready for a 12 round boxing clinic if need be. We’ve got the power there, but we’re not going to look for it. Never look for the knockout, set it up with crisp shots and it will end up coming.”

Paro has shown great versatility in his career to date. In his last three fights he recovered from an opening round knockdown to out-boxed a game Yomar Alamo over 10 heats, blasted out Jeff Fenech protégé Brock Jarvis in one, and delivered a highlight reel knockout of fringe contender Montana Love in San Francisco last December, stopping him in six.

He will need to show a little bit over everything to get past Matias.

“Exactly right,” Paro said. “People just sort of stand in the pocket and trade with him. Anyone who half-knows boxing can see he doesn’t have great footwork. We can box him on the outside, we can get on the inside and get dirty too.

“So like I said, I believe I’ve got every base covered. We’ve got the artillery to match, if not out-fire, his firepower. So yeah, I’m excited.”

The bout is being advertised as a homecoming for Matias, who hasn’t fought on the boxing-mad island in almost five years. A sellout crowd is expected at the event and Paro fans will be are rare as hen’s teeth.

All Paro wants, to use an Aussie colloquialism, is a fair suck of the sauce bottle.

“The IBF is a beautiful organization, I’m very blessed to be fighting for them,” he said. “I believe the judging and refereeing is going to be no problem. I think I’m going to get a fair shake and that’s all we’ve ever asked for and that’s what we’re going to get.

“The rest is just up to me to do what I do. I believe I’ve got the boxing ability to make the cards wide enough to get the decision if it goes that far.”

And if it doesn’t go that far?

“We’ve seen in the last fight I had, if I hit anyone clean, they’re going to have a hard time peeling themselves off the canvas.

“Matias really banks on his fitness too, but I’m just as fit. I’ve shown that in my fights too. Fitness is a massive factor.

“We’ve covered all bases for this camp. We’ve added things in there to ensure we’re ready. We’re ready to bring the heat and give Matias a hell of a fight. I think we’re going to surprise him a lot in that ring.

“Like I do with everyone, I surprise them. And by the time they realize, it’s a bit too late.”

From unheard of and untested fighters.
This bout is a real test for both guys and a win delivers plenty of credibility for whoever gets it.
Looking forward to it, Paro will want to make sure his defence is better than ever as this guy can seriously crack

A terrific matchup between two of the divisions young guns: it looks a hellishly tough fight for the Aussie star to take on though, especially in Puerto Rico, but when you look at the divisions other top fighters, there is no easy way to a title here.

The champion was hugely impressive in his last fight, taking out the formidable Ergashev like that, so he’s gotta be favoured here, but he can be hit and Paro looks like he packs some TNT
