David Benavidez Says Canelo Alvarez Fight Looking More Realistic

Post by apollo creed »

“When we had first negotiated, they said they wanted to give me a flat fee of $5 million. I was perfectly fine with it,” said Benavidez. “Right now, the way I take these fights, I don't really look at the money. The money is not important for me. What's important for me is that I do my job 100 percent, and the money is going to follow. I'm not worried about how much money I'm going to get, because after I beat Canelo that's when the money and everything else comes. As of right now, I'm not looking at this fight as a one-fight cash-out deal. After I beat him, he will want a rematch, and that's when I become a PPV star.”

“Whatever [the terms are], as long as it's not ridiculous. I just want to make this fight happen,” said Benavidez. “If he's really not scared of me, if he's really going to knock me out or does whatever he says he's going to do, there shouldn't be a catchweight. He didn't do a rehydration clause with [Dmitry] Bivol. But if wants me to do a rehydration clause, I'll do it. But I won't do a catchweight clause – 168 pounds is already hard to get to. If he's confident in his skills, then let's put it to the test, and may the best man win.”

“I've been kind of done with 168 pounds. I earned the opportunity to fight Canelo Alvarez, but since I am not getting that fight, there is really no other fight at 168. I want to test 175 pounds, and this is the perfect opportunity [against Gvozdyk],” said Benavidez. from B.S

So basically Benavidez would want this fight to be at 175 lbs, but we know that Canelo is calling the shots, so I'd not be surprised if Canelo would want it at 168 with a 10-15 lbs rehydration clause. For that, they would need to give Benavidez 30-40 M's. Anyway, if Canelo would beat a dehydrated version of Benavidez then he would get no credit, which is perfectly understandable.

Thoughts?

Obviously Team Benavidez has the inside track to what is or isn't happening, but it doesn't seem like its any closer to me from a fan POV.

I don't see Canelo vs Benavidez happening unless Turki throws Canelo a career high payday to fight him. I think it happens or doesn't happen at the interest of Turki & Turki seems to want Canelo vs Bud & Benavidez vs Bivol, Beterbiev &/or Jai more.

The thing with Canelo is that he's very, very financially comfortable, so he'd fight who he wants.

"All I see is that Benavidez weighs 25 or 30 pounds more than I do on the day of the fight," Alvarez told press at a charity golf event on Wednesday. "I have no problem with that, but if you want me to fight with him it's $200 million."

Doesn't pretty much every fighter walk around at 20 or 25 pounds heavier than their fighting weight? That seems to be fairly common.

Not if you intend on boxing at Welterweight it doesn't.
DB has clearly stated he wants to move right up and has little interest in the middle divisions of boxing.

I think it just depends on the fighter. Some guys' weights fluctuates worse than others. For the most part I'd say it's probably a good idea to keep a consistent weight all the time, but if you're building up muscle and growing in a healthy way I figure that's alright. Benavidez certainly doesn't look out of shape.

The thing with Canelo is that he's very, very financially comfortable, so he'd fight who he wants.
Whats Canelo's biggest payday? I feel like hes well off enough to have retire several yrs ago if he wanted to, but I think if Turki offered him like ~20% more than his best payday he'd be down. Even cash cows got their number & this is one of the unique times in history a guy is paying those numbers.

That said the bigger problem is I don't think the money guy, Turki, gives a F about Canelo vs Benavidez. Hes more into Canelo vs Bud & Benavidez vs the Bivol vs Beterbiev winner.

Can you see him at 200 pounds.
Way things are going with Usyk breaking the weight barrier on what you can take, in a couple of years Benavidez could well find himself in that company if he keeps winning.

DB is naturally a chubby dude. I can see him having a pretty flabby end of his career.

Now, I think they would make this fight at 168, as Bena looked not so impressing against a washed up, semi-retired old Gvozdyk that went light on him. Las Vegas or Al Riyadh. :box:
