Wlad might have been old but he was a loooooong undefeated champ and he went over into his adopted homeland and won, the comeback from out of ring issues surprised nearly everyone, the Wilder win was epic at the time (we've changed the narrative about Wilder now he's lost 4 badly) as he was long reining WBC champ. And regarding Usyk - we'll never know if he'd have beaten both, or either.
being a title holder is just a fluff title on its own. gotta looks at who they actually beat, wilder's opposition was dreadful. derek chisora would be at worst his 2nd best victim if he ever beat him
usyk woulda absolutely clowned wilder at any point
he beat the people in front of him, and held the best belt. Fair play. Every champion beat plenty of less than stellar challengers.
how many of those opponents were impressive?
the best belt? what nonsense is that? it's about who you beat.

take it up with Joe Louis who beat more chumps than quality. Ditto everyone else we laud.

Is why I'd much rather see Usyk-Opetaia and AJ-Fury in December. Now Usyk's mentioned his desire to return, he could become the first in history to go from heavyweight to cruiserweight champ. Monumental feat.
But he's at an age where Opetaia's pace might stretch him if he found it hard to make weight. He's still close to his prime if comfortable, but tick-tock.
Likewise, AJ and Fury are on the brink of their fight losing the relevance it deserves.

the 'best belt' the wbc, decided in a vacant title fight between blobs chris arreola and bermane stiverene, while wlad held the ibf/wba/wbo
On the one hand, we have the WBC belt, considered (by many a Fury fan) to be the most coveted of the orgs. On the other hand, we are told (by many a Fury fan) that Wlad started his own lineage without it.
true. and i mean who cares about the belt other than the quality of opponents you have to fight and defeat to get and hang onto it
there is no single best belt that is more impressive to win than all the others, you gotta take it case by case. fury beat wlad and usyk beat aj to win the non wbc belts. wilder beat blobby bermane stiverne to win his wbc. what's better? clearly the first two cases
joshua beating parker to win the wbo from him was better than wilder beating stiverne too. parker beating ruiz to win the wbo originally was as well.
Quite apt Joe Louis name comes up when discussing a former world heavyweight champion falling out of a club drunk
As for comparisons to other longtime champions - there really isn't when it comes to both Wilder & Fury.
Yes Louis had his 'bum of the month' era, but he actually faced and beat the best of who was available during his era too
excellent post. Agree. Also think Fury could surprise us all, he's done it many times.
Against who though Sean?
Old Wlad and Wilder have been his best wins. Uysk would have beaten both. Whyte was shot, Chisora was a cash grab. Its a slim resume.

plus wilder was away from home too. he should still get credit for that simply after being a blob and coming back to take that fight in his 3rd
When did Tyson suddenly become a "lightweight". Perhaps my mind is playing tricks, but I am sure when was at his low point - he would regularly say that he was "sinking 12 pints a day" after the Wilder fight!
That's no lightweight.
I don't think I've ever heard of a guy who is 6 foot 7 (or whatever he is) - 20 plus stone and had a long association with Alcohol issues "being a lightweight".

If he's been in camps for a year it will affect his tolerance level. I used to drink insane amounts, I think I'd be drunk on four pints if I was to drink again.

Yes, but he is also a bigger guy and it was relatively recently he had a issue with the drink and used to speak about having a few pints just minutes before a fight. Not suggesting he can still sink 12 pints and still feel relatively sober - but I think the impression Warren has been giving in interviews was that is Fury's tolerance level after 2 /3 pints.
It doesn't really matter, nowt wrong with a blow out - but I don't buy that was just a couple of drinks and why imply that it was.
Fury has said in interviews he’s a light weight and can’t handle his drink. My tolerance levels are crap now as I hardly drink anymore but I could put it away when I was younger as I was drinking quite regularly.

Fury also said he was drinking twelve pints a night celebrating the victory in the 3rd fight vs Wilder - not that long ago. You don't become a lightweight in that short a time frame - unless you have had a medical procedure.

Oh yes you can 12 months ago i would go to the pub 5 out of 7 nights some nights have a seshion and drink 15..16 pints . Go to a bbq take a 30 pack of full strenght cans drink the lot and still be coherant reasonbly sober....now i only go perhaps twice aweek drink definetly no more than 5 ..6 pints go to bbq will only take a 6 pack and feel real tipsy if i drik them quick and i.ve never stopped just cut down
how the hell do you even have time to down 30 full strength cans at 1 bbq? how long are you there for? how f@cking fast are you drinking a can? do you actually interact with people or are you just nonstop chugging? sounds like an inconvenience tb

It's Australia, things are different over there. The first 15 tinnies just quell the dehydration, the next 15 are the actual drinkies.

Depends on a few things, how fast you are downing them, if you a mixing them with spirits etc. I'm sure most of us have had times when we've drank loads and others we've got drunk quickly. Maybe he was falling over drunk then too, we just haven't got photographs showing it.

LOL
At 5 cans an hour that is 6 hours of tipping full strength piss down the neck.
"Fancy a steak sarnie coneye?"
"No time to eat Darl, still got 15 more cans to get thru!"
