I always think of the likes of Chavez and Marquez when this comes up, but I'm obviously judging this in the context of elite level. Chavez in particular overcame faster fighters like Taylor and Mayweather Sr with shots that frequently appeared slow in relative terms, but that were thudding rather than explosive. Proverbial sledgehammers just wearing down opponents.
With Marquez I'm probably being unfair as I'm thinking of him against the likes of Mayweather Jr and Pacman, rather than his entire career.

Actually, you got me thinking of another fighter - Deserter

Kostya Tszyu - never looked especially quick, but master technician.

I would say though Chavez in his absolutely pomp was pretty quick - I think he was already slightly passed his absolute pomp when he faced Taylor.

Yeh, good call mate - him against Judah was a textbook example of how great timing beats pure speed.
In my sad life I just went back and watched the highlights of Mayweather Sr vs Chavez (both I and II), and you may have a point, as even in the second Mayweather fight he looked tangibly slower than the first.

Bernard Hopkins

Featherweight/SF MAB - as he got older and wiser he relied more on amazing jab and tucking up well.

Would you guys class Duran as lacking speed not sure I say beyond welterweight he lacked speed but relied on his skills. At WW obviously was slower than SRL but just about everyone was.

Tszyu is a great shout amazing technician (his amateur record was insane) and ability to time people. Wish he'd fought Floyd Mayweather Jr but no doubt Mayweather Jr avoided him like the plague and ran after Gatti instead.

Hopkins is a good call but can't say I'm with you on Duran. Even against Barkley when he rolled the years back, he didn't look that slow.
As for Tszyu, I loved him, but Mayweather had speed AND timing.

Now, I think there is some distinctions between "speed" and "flash". Hopkins looked "slow" next to the super fast, speedy and flash RJJ. However, against other fighters he seemed to have the up hand. Quite often (particularly early) he was beating Joe Calzaghe to exchanges. Yes, JC eventually showcased greater stamina (still came up short IMO) but Hopkins looked quicker for a good part of that fight - but he "hid" his supririsng fast handspeed well.

Similarly (at a lower level) - Steve Robinson. Wasn't flash - so didn't look fast - but he watch him fight and he actually had really sharp quick hands and it was his handspeed that did for Paul Hodkinson.

Surely Dennis Andries rates a mention here. Loved watching Dennis but neither his feet nor his hands were particularly quick.

Disagree re Froch - I thought his speed was deceptive and that his slightly angular, awkward stance hid it.

hoppy had decently quick hands most career, but noticably slowed in his later 175 days, and also went from a good combination puncher to mostly a single shotter. vs pascal is a case of beating a guy who is faster and harder punching

Nothing flashy or fast, just so damn accurate, so much pressure, and so effective.
