Ironically there is a Nicaraguan brand of cigars called Roberto Duran - nothing to do with the great man as it pre-dates him even being born (1920's or 30's - haven't googled it)

I think I've smoked 5 cigars in my life but my buddy and I were in a place that sold them. We had one each so we could say "We smoked Roberto Duran".

Utterly puerile and childish but made us laugh.

What's really odd is Edwards' contention that smoking is beneficial to hemoglobin.

edwards is a hot taker, who doesnt seem to read much on what he talks about. comes up with lots of wacky stuff like he's some type of sage. he probably saw that smoking can increase hemoglobin levels and concluded that this is beneficial, when it's actually the opposite

research indicates that smoking is much more likely to lead to an increased hemoglobin count, which can lead to diseases like secondary polycythemia
Higher hemoglobin levels are an independent risk factor for adverse metabolism and higher mortality in a 20-year follow-up
In conclusion, our study showed that continuous cigarette smoking has severe adverse effects on haematological parameters (e.g., hemoglobin, white blood cells count, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, red blood cells count, hematocrit) and these alterations might be associated with a greater risk for developing atherosclerosis, polycythemia vera, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and/or cardiovascular diseases.
but sure sunny, puff away and raise those hemoglobin levels to da roof

As a teen, I was always surprised how many good level amateurs (e.g. Welsh vests) smoked - but really it isn't that suprising - with the greatest of respects, boxing will attract more of the lads who got into to trouble in school etc than those who were the swotty, goody two shoes.

Mayorga used to smoke, he probably still does. Tyson smoked. Chavez Snr definitely did, as did junior. Toney smoked cigars.

I am reasonably sure, back in the day that cyclists would smoke before a big climb.

I think Dempsey smoked but I imagine a lot of boxers from that era possibly did at some point because it was everywhere.

Its always puzzled me that governments were allowed to effectively ban smoking and increase the prices so much that it effectively prohibits purchase. They say they are doing it to save people`s health and the burden it puts on society through cost of care.

Imagine if they have the same idea about alcohol? Not as weird as it may seem. 40 years ago as you puffed your John Player Special on the back of the plane, you would never have imagined that in the future smokers would be hunted down and cast in the role of social lepers.

20 years from now some governments might decide that drink is next. They can do it if they want. Look at covid, people being told what they could and could not do in their own houses (no more than 6 people allowed and a minimum 1.5 metre distance at all times) and the public nodded like lemmings and did as they were told.

The cost alcohol has on society is 100 times that of smoking. From health issues, to creating family and social issues, policing, prisons etc.

Drink as much as you can now, they are coming for booze next

Governments want more and more control over what normal people do. Soon they will watch everything.

I like a drink but I kind of hope they do take that option away from me for both my health and for the good of society. its an awful thing the booze.

hahaha I used to smoke Drum, no judgement here. I did compete in strongman at the time but I don't think the fags made as much negative impact on my health compared to all the gear, HGH, Insulin and other crap!
