Chris Eubank Jr. signs with Boxxer ahead of ‘mega-fights’

Amid speculation that he is in the running to face Saul “Canelo” Alvarez next, Chris Eubank Jr. has linked up with promoters Boxxer.

Previously promoter by Wasserman boxing, Eubank recently became a free agent and has signed with Ben Shalom’s company, whom he has worked with before, notably in two recent fights with Liam Smith.

According to a press release to announce the union and discuss the fighter’s career, the intentions are for “mega-fights and [Eubank] vows to silence his domestic rivals ahead of his hotly anticipated ring return.”

“I’ve been in the game for 12 years now and I’m still hungry,” the 34-year-old contender said. “I’m still excited. I’m still in love with the sport of boxing. I’m in a blessed position right now where there are four or five different names out there that are mega fights that everybody wants to see. Canelo Alvarez, Terence Crawford, Conor Benn, Billy Joe Saunders – and that’s just off the top of my head. There are many more fights out there that can be made, even domestically, so I’m in an exciting position.”

Eubank Jr. is 33-3 (24 KOs), and holds victories over James DeGale, Arthur Abraham, Liam Smith, Matvey Korobov, Avni Yildirim and Dmitrii Chudinov.

He stopped Smith in the 10th round in his last fight in September.

Shalom said: “Chris Eubank Jr. is undoubtedly one of the biggest star attractions in boxing. He brings excitement and intrigue wherever he goes. BOXXER is his natural home and I’m incredibly excited to work with Chris to make sure we fully realise his huge potential and fierce ambition. We’ve had the privilege of working with Chris on some massive fight nights in the UK and there will be plenty more to come in the UK and worldwide. He is a bonafide pay-per-view star. The hunger and ambition is there. We can’t wait to see him back in action and involved in some massive fights.”

The BOXXER stable also includes WBO world cruiserweight champion Chris Billam-Smith, light-heavyweight prospect Ben Whittaker, unified welterweight world Champion Lauren Price, WBO No. 1 light-heavyweight contender Joshua Buatsi and fast-rising stars Adam Azim, Caroline Dubois, Viddal Riley and Karriss Artingstall.

Eubank Jr. added: “I’m very excited to have signed with BOXXER and Ben Shalom. They fit the direction I want to go in. We have big plans over the next 12 to 24 months. There are big fights in the pipeline and these guys can make it happen. This is a partnership. I have the freedom and the leeway to work how I want to work, which is very rare. I’m in a position of power. I’m in a position to really control the direction that I want to go in so I’m excited.”

Canelo’s next fight is the final one of his PBC deal. Eubank signing with Boxxer doesn’t impact his chances of getting the fight. The US tends to heavily overestimate the U.K. financials.

Let’s see what happens. Eddie’s claiming that Eubank has signed with Boxxer for a couple of soft fights.

I would guess that Boxxer are desperate for a PPV. They’re in the last 12 months of their deal with Sky and will want a couple of U.K. PPVs to make some money and get in Sky’s good graces.

I think we’ll get a U.K. Sky PPV with Eubank Jr in an average fight and Wardley/Clarke. Plus possibly Azim/Harlem.

Nobody would expect Canelo to have any sort of problem beating him; even this Canelo at the end of his career too .. I really doubt there would be any interest in it anyways

Exactly what I was thinking, the tail end of what peaked in a loss to Groves way back in early 2018. That was his last world title fight, and they have been avoiding him competing in any since, Smithy being his highest level challenge.
So I think it's a terrific opportunity for Chris, and what are Boxxer thinking?

Yes - Eubank Jr just probably throwing Canelo`s name out there in the hope some actually believe he belongs in that mix/level - where as the reality is a similarly old and lighter guy bashed him up and stopped him in his last but one fight.

Shalom will have to sort out FWarren who remains adamant they have a deal still.

I get the impression that Shalom is desperate for PPVs as he’s now in the final year with Sky Sports and Yarde/Buatsi is probably a PPV headliner for them.

My understanding is that he’s being advised by Maz Majeed. The same guy who got Okolie/Buatsi away from Matchroom and who is also working with Eubank.

The Buatsi case is still being disputed legally.

A year ago I could see Shalom not caring about a potential legal issue with Warren but now he’s getting involved more with the Saudi shows I’d be surprised if he wants to rock the boat.

Ben Shalom reveals plans for Chris Eubank Jr’s next fight

BOXXER founder Ben Shalom, in an interview with Betfred, has claimed that Canelo Álvarez at Wembley Stadium “could be next” for Chris Eubank Jr, but believes he’s “prioritising” fighting Conor Benn.

“Canelo could be next. We were talking about doing the fight in September, but it came too late when Chris had been out of the ring for a year. Now he’s had that fight and feels fresh, talks have begun in a very, very small way.

“If you’re Canelo and you want a big fight, across the Atlantic that will excite the UK fans as well, then there’s nobody bigger than Chris Eubank Jr. Last week, you saw him be the star of the show, despite Artur Beterbiev, Dmitry Bivol, Frazer Clarke and Fabio Wardley being on the card. He became the star. That’s what he does.

“You can imagine the size of the fight between those two. Maybe for the first time, UK fans could see Canelo in the flesh. I think that’s very attractive to Canelo and I do expect that fight to happen. For whatever reason the license issue is prolonged with Conor Benn, I can see that fight being next.”

Ben Shalom on whether he believes Eubank Jr. and Canelo could fight in the UK.

“We would love to. It just comes down to money really. It depends on whether the UK can generate as much as what Canelo would naturally earn in the US. I believe the gate could be huge and I believe it would sell out Wembley Stadium because it would be an enormous, enormous event. I think Canelo would be interested in it and we have had those talks prior, but it didn’t quite work for the dates we were looking at last time because obviously Anthony Joshua was facing Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium, so it was off the cards for that day.

“I definitely think it’s a possibility. There or Vegas, which is Chris’ second home and it would hopefully be during the Cinco de Mayo weekend.”

Making weight, not having a fight, he believing that he had been misled and the whole carry on has made it very personal for him and I think he prioritises that fight because of everything that’s happened.

“It would be a different fight to what it would have been two years ago because so much has happened and I believe Chris has kept his dignity and kept his character throughout. He can’t wait to get his hands on Conor. He really can’t.

Ben Shalom on whether he’d want any extra measures put in place if Eubank Jr and Benn agree to another fight.

“I’d be very surprised if those circumstances were to repeat themselves, but we’d definitely want to see further testing. The weight is likely to be different this time, probably 160lbs rather than that ridiculous 157-158lbs and that rehydration clause, which made it extremely dangerous for Chris and that again added so much to his anger as he had to go through all that to get to a very unnatural weight that probably affected him in the first Liam Smith fight because he was coming off the back of two weight-cuts. This time it would be a more sensible weight at 160lbs, which is still hard enough for Chris to make.

“This time we should get a fairer fight and that’s all you’d hope for and all you’d expect. Hopefully we can put all that nonsense behind us.”
