On this date at New York City's Madison Square Garden, the great Salvador Sanchez of Mexico, defended his WBC World Featherweight Crown against challenger Azumah Nelson of Ghana.
It was Friday night of July 21, 1982. It was Sanchez's 9th title defense. It was a war from start to finish. Nelson, 24, only had 13 professional fights, but had already won the Ghanian, African Continent and British Empire Featherweight crowns to that point.
It was a very close fight that Sanchez pulled it up by stopping the relentless Nelson by technical knockout in round 15.
Unfortunately, it was Sanchez's last fight. On August 12 of that same year, he died in a car crash at age 23.
