Julius Ballo

Post by locoxelbox »

Any idea what happened to him? He beat Jahmal Harvey and was US National champion in 2022 after a great youth career, winning gold at the Youth Panams in 2021.

Ballo hasn't done much since (?) while Harvey went on to win the real Panams and is one of the favorites to win gold in Paris...

Ballo won the '24 National Golden Gloves beating Keith Colon, a very good boxer out of Newark, NJ. Colon always lost in the finals in several national tournaments. He's getting ready to turn pro on the under card of Shukur Stevenson's next fight.

Jamal Harvey was the '21 world champ and even though Ballo beat him in a tournament in Colorado in '22, USA Boxing told Ballo they wanted Harvey to be their Olympian in '24 and Ballo for '28.

USA Boxing did a lot of stupid stuff this Olympic year like not having their High Performance team box in '22 or '23 US Championships. They left IBA so they didn't box in the '23 world championships and the HP team didn't box in the Olympic trials which was so stupid. Not one boxer who won the Olympic trials is on the Olympic team. What sport does that? Why have the Olympic trials if you are only trying to find the alternate? Call the tournament something else. That's just not the way things have been done for the US team in the past. It would have been much better to have the HP team earn their way onto the Olympic team with a double elimination tournament like in the past.

The US only qualified 8 boxers out of 13 weight classes for men and women. They had a '21 world champ, Robby Gonzales who did not qualify for Paris and Naomi Graham was on the last Olympic team and got beat in the 1st bout at all 3 qualifiers.
They still have some good boxers so it will be interesting to see how they do, especially since the Russians won't be boxing in the Olympics.
