You have no idea how hard I was barracking for Azumah when he kayoed Jeff Fenech.barry wrote:No doubt...I feel the same about Kassim Ouma, but I'm not going to give him extra history points...though Tiger earned his points in the ring, but I just don't think he is a better fighter than Azumah Nelson...just as good...it's a very close call!

Well, while I was rooting for Nelson, I though Fenech got jobbed in the first fight, but Azumah cleared all doubt in the second and just destroyed Fenech...well he completely ruined Fenech and Fenech was one hell of a fighter. Nelson did that to a couple of other fighters as well!

Nelson
Didn't Nelson just win alphabet titles rather than true undisputed championships? I didn't know he was ever an undisputed champ in any weight class.
re
Well regardless of titles, Nelson was the best of his class...he defeated the other top fighters at 130 and gained general recognition when he beat Jesse James Lejia in 1996 and I'm pretty sure at 126 aws well, though I would have to check on that!

I am, but nationality aside, I always had a strong dislike for Fenech. I never liked his boasting or his fighting style.thunderfromdownunder wrote:Aldo Pravisani wrote:You have no idea how hard I was barracking for Azumah when he kayoed Jeff Fenech.barry wrote:No doubt...I feel the same about Kassim Ouma, but I'm not going to give him extra history points...though Tiger earned his points in the ring, but I just don't think he is a better fighter than Azumah Nelson...just as good...it's a very close call!

Re: Nelson
Thats what most champions were, alphabet title holders ever since that system came into play, even Larry Holmes. The only undisputed title I can remember from watching boxing in the eighties was Marvin Hagler at middleweight. For some reason it was excruciatingly difficult to get a unification bout set up and when they would unify a title it would somehow end up going back to being split up again. Given those set of circumstances I don't think this detracts from Nelsons Resume.Cojimar 1945 wrote:Didn't Nelson just win alphabet titles rather than true undisputed championships? Azumah Nelson
It does detract from his resume if he did not prove himself the best by beating the other top guys in his weight class. I will need to investigate just who was active when Nelson was fighting.

If Tiger was knocked out cold by Foster, then Nelson was totally schooled by Whitaker. It was a boxing lesson.
Tiger was one of the few fighters that won the middleweight and lighthavyweight crowns. And for historical significance, was THE FIRST African to win The Ring Fighter of the Year, and he did it TWICE. What a fighter!!!

Nelson should have won fighter of the year at least once but was overlooked like so many lighter weight fighters, how many times has a fighter below 160 won fighter of the year?...elmersalsa wrote:If Tiger was knocked out cold by Foster, then Nelson was totally schooled by Whitaker. Also Nelsons poor showing against Pernall must have something to do with his wife dying of cancer at around the time of the fight...

Just wanted to make a few points.
Tiger beat Giardello, Fullmer, Torres and Benevenuti. Only Torres is a borderline Hall of Famer, the rest are all-time greats. Tiger also beat top 10 guys like Spider Webb, Henry Hank,Holly Mims, and Rubin Carter.
Nelson was a great fighter but his wins doesn't really compare to Tiger's.
He did beat Gomez, and had some other nice wins, but it doesn't compare to Tiger's wins.
I know I'm going to get some criticism for this, but why is it such a big deal to beat Jeff Fenech? Who did Fenech ever beat?
