Sunny Edwards vs Galal Yafai in the works

Eddie Hearn sat down for a softball interview with his crew at Matchroom HQ this morning, and while it produced very little of substance, he did give us one interesting bit of info. Though it’s not done quite yet, Hearn claims he’s “working hard” to finalize Sunny Edwards vs Galal Yafai and hopes to make an announcement “soon.”

Edwards (21-1, 4 KO) bounced back from last year’s loss to Jesse Rodriguez with a technical decision over Adrian Curiel in June, putting himself in prime position to re-enter the title picture and establish a new reign in the post-”Bam” era. He’ll be the highest-rated contender for Angel Ayala Lardizabal when the IBF updates its rankings and will be near the top for the winner of Kenshiro Teraji vs Cristofer Rosales as well.

That said, it’s very understandable that he’d face Yafai (7-0, 5 KO) first. The Tokyo gold medalist is already 31 with over a decade of combined pro/amateur experience; there’s no reason to let this marinate further, especially since (as Hearn points out) they’ve got some bad blood. It’s an easy sell, pitting the UK’s slickest pro against one of its most decorated amateurs.

Whether it’ll be any good to watch is another question entirely. It’s interesting on a conceptual level, at least.

Presumably would make it for a vacant belt? I think Sunny would be favourite.

It'll definitely be scruffy, but I imagine it should be decent fun at least- Sunny's defensive but he's rarely really boring and Yafai can only really go forward.

Sunny should school him though tbqh.

that is one I'd love to see. I have no idea who would win though so went for a draw. I really enjoy watching Sunny box, and Galal is super talented. I respect that he stayed am to do Olympics again, he should definitely win a version of the world title. Or at least nearly win one and make a load of money a la Campbell.

He doesn't have a full city behind him and is in a poor paying division. This will be his best payday.

One for the purists and I’ll be tuned right in. I’ve got £20 on Yafai just with me mate from the gym.

I think he’s obviously stronger, and a Gold Medalist should have enough about him not to be bamboozled by Sunny. I can imagine it being a bit like Yafai Vs The Cuban in the Tokyo semis.

How much has Bam taken out of Sunny?

ooooh good little bet that mate. Boxrec shows Sunny beating Gala on a SB as an am but those records are always incomplete, anyone know if they fought more than once? I know the am record doesn't indicate what will transpire in the pros especially that long ago.

Yafai doesn’t hit as hard as Bam but he doesn’t stop throwing. I’m a bit annoyed that we’re both on evens when I think I could’ve done better with a bet with a bookies. But a handshake is a handshake.

I think GY hits harder than he’s getting credit for, the main question is is he ready for a long hard 12 rnd pro fight.

No idea about how many am bouts or even what those bouts looked like soz mate

Sunny Edwards vs Galal Yafai official for November 30th in Birmingham

Sunny Edwards sits in three sanctioning bodies’ top fives

Britain’s best flyweights are officially set to duke it out, as Matchroom announced today that former champion Sunny Edwards will face Tokyo gold medalist Galal Yafai on November 30th at Birmingham’s BP Pulse Arena.

As mentioned before, Edwards (21-1, 4 KOs) has a strong claim to being the best flyweight of the post-”Bam” era; only Kenshiro Teraji, who makes his divisional debut exactly one month from now in a vacant title fight against Cristofer Rosales, has a comparable body of work.

That’s if we only take the professional game into account, though, as Yafai (7-0, 5 KOs) boasts impeccable bona fides in the amateur ranks. He’s also looked strong throughout his brief pro career, though he’s yet to meet anyone in the same universe as Edwards as far as technique or accomplishments.

Aside from Edwards vs Teraji, this is among the most interesting fights the division has to offer in terms of storyline and overall skill level. Might not be good to watch, but it’ll be fascinating to observe.

“This fight has always been inevitable,” said Edwards. “Our last names hold weight in British boxing and around the world – and it’s really time to put to bed the Edwards-Yafai Saga.

“Being overlooked for the Olympic Games because of family relationships and city ties – lit a fire all those years back. I beat Galal and was shelved in the same year back in 2015 and now this is my chance to show Britain who the real golden boy is.”

“I’m happy that the fight has been made,” said Yafai. “This is going to be a massive fight for British boxing. I need to win a World Title, and this is a fight that will put me on the cusp of fighting for one when I win in my hometown on November 30.”

Can't see this being a particularly great fight but it is very very interesting. How much motivation does Edwards have left, how much is in the tank, is this too soon for Yafai? Is he as good as hyped?

Loads of questions.

cheers mate and no worries, it's my laziness not checking properly. Galal seems very confident in interviews but very respectful.

I think Sunny might not even be at his peak, he's several years younger than Galal. I don't mean that as a dig, Galal is an excellent boxer.
