Benny Briscoe's legacy?

Post by NYDominican »

Most posters on Box Rec give a lot of accolades to Harry Greb, Henry Armstrong, Sugar Ray Robinson, Willie Pep, Roberto Duran, Carlos Monzon, Marvin Hagler, Sugar Ray Robinson, Bernard Hopkins, and Floyd Mayweather, Jr.. This is totally understandable.

Benny Briscoe doesn't get the level of coverage such as what the boxers listed in the above paragraph get.

But, Benny had a long, established, and very respectable career.

Briscoe did lose a number of fights. But, Benny NEVER lost a fight due to a knockout or a technical knockout (tko).

Benny had SUPERHUMAN chin strength and a threshold of pain.

1. Do you think that Briscoe is underrated?

2. If not quite at the level of the greats in my above paragraph, do you think that Benny is just below them?

If so, why? If not, why not.

Please explain.

A very tough fighter, a top competitor of his times, but not an ATG.

Big fan of Briscoe, but he did get stopped by Valdes. Only 1 stoppage in 96 fights though which isn’t anything to be sniffed at. Long time top ten raked fighter who didn’t duck anyone

Briscoe has been called underrated so many times he is now overrated. Boxing's answer to Dennis Johnson and Joe Dumars.

Tough fighter. Another guy who could be called a “ fighters fighter” he also represented a style and a place. “ the Philly middleweight “ there was a time you’d hear that and think of him. A few others as well but he may have been the best representative

Excellent post.
Thank you. I believe Benny went to work or possibly even kept his job with the Philly streets and sanitation while he was fighting. It would’ve been great if he made a good deal of dough but probably he didn’t

The city of Philadelphia probably is the city that has produced probably the best top-flight quality boxing talent, and "Bad" Bennie Briscoe is one of them.

Every fighter can't have a legacy, but Bricsoe deserves to be remembered as a good middle weight of the 70's who fought a ton, winning and losing his share.  He was washed up by the time he fought Hagler, but was he said  robbed into a draw in his first match with Monzon which took place in his home country of Argentina..

Not the most skillful man, but he was tough.  You could say he fought say he fought lot of name guys, losing to most of them.
