New Book: Baer-Campbell fight / Campbell bio

"Then The World Moved On: The Brutal Truth Behind the Baer–Campbell Fight" by Catherine Johnson, knocks boxing history on its cauliflowered ear, with the most painstakingly researched and scrupulously detailed book ever written about the tragic end of Frankie Campbell, and Max Baer's shocking hand in his death.

Preceded with a Foreword by Ray Mancini, the book chronicles not only Campbell's life and career, it exhaustively examines his fight with Baer, the resultant fallout and appalling coverup of the truth, and the horrific details of Baer's lies and manipulation of the event and its aftermath.

A variety of original source materials going back a century, were thoroughly investigated and meticulously pieced together, among them newspapers, court transcripts, medical records, genealogical, archival, federal, state, and local records, along with psychological analysis and brain trauma study, as well as interviews with Campbell's family members, former pro fighters, and boxing historians.

Along with over 1400 cited sources, over 150 rare photos, illustrations, and fight advertisements, the book also discusses the legendary men who made California a boxing mecca in the early Twentieth Century, and the popular venues where fights were held. Woven artfully into the narrative, is how the context of the times, the Golden Age of American Sports, the Roaring Twenties, Prohibition, and the Great Depression, affected the sport, and the lives of the men who molded the game.

I interviewed Frank's nieces in person and over the phone. They were 2 of 7 children of baseballer Dolph Camilli, Frank's brother. They were/are the keepers of dozens of boxes of memorabilia. I was given access to family videos and photo albums, many images of which are in the book.

The fight first came across my radar after "Cinderella Man" debut in summer 2005. The controversy which erupted piqued my interest. Old timers who personally knew fighters, promoters, managers, etc., of the 1920s and 30s spoke freely with me.

I developed a relationship with Hap Navarro, who was active in Southern CA boxing, starting right after WWII. Hap was asst matchmaker and then became matchmaker of the Olympic Auditorium in LA. He took over the job from Cal Working. Cal was Frankie Campbell’s manager. Hap was the one who told me the stories that had come down through the decades about the Baer-Campbell fight, were a coverup of the truth.

I've spent the last 3 years in deep daily research of a subject which has intrigued me for almost 20 years now.

You might want to refer back to your own posts made during the rollout of your Greb book and reread your own words, reactions, and actions. You've effectively become those fellows you professed anger toward: people with absolutely no knowledge of the truth who engaged in petty attacks. I stand 100% by my work and my discoveries. I've been just as diligent and thorough in the depths I went to in my research as you did with your book. I didn't pull over 1400 cited sources out of thin air. I did the work.

I have a devastating Foreword written by Ray Mancini. I have the backing and repeated public support, of both former editor-in-chief of Ring Magazine, Nigel Collins, former senior writer for The Ring magazine and boxing columnist for HBO.com, Bill Dettloff, and boxing biographers Clay Moyle, Ron L. Jackson Jr., and Glen Sharp. Doubtful they would all put their long-standing reputations on the line for some fluff piece.

Maybe we should compare how YOU describe the fight on facebook with accounts written by ringside observers…. Fair enough. Like you, I stand by my work and anyone, you included, can come right here and show me which sources Ive misquoted or left out or like in your case which events Ive made up or emblished.

Any accounts of the fight I write on public forums were taken directly from a minimum of 10-15 separate cited sports reporters, sports editors, and in one case, Jim Jeffries, who all sat ringside.

B.S.. And the fact that you deleted that post on facebook shows that you are lying and trying to hide your bias.

Lets just clear a few things up. In your post on facebook, which youve now deleted, did you or did you not allege that the fight was fixed for Baer and that Toby Irwin (one of the most respected boxing men on the West Coast for the first 50 years of the 20th century) was biased and cite as proof that he was appointed by the local boxing commission (which is and always has been common practice. You claimed that Baer was somehow at fault for his death despite Campbell's own wife exhonerrating him and forgiving him. Baer himself was terribly distressed by the event but you want to paint him as some cold hearted murderer. You do realize that between rounds Campbell went back to his corner complaining that his head felt like it was broken and his own corner still sent him out to fight. You ignore that the fight was viciously fought on both sides, with both fighters fouling, and adding to the enmity was the fact that one of Baer's cornermen, Tillie Kid Herman, had crossed sides on short notice and went to work in Campbell's corner for the fight which threw Baer into a rage. The outcome of this fight was a tragedy but your need to paint it as some big conspiracy is ridiculous. Literally nobody at the time did that and interviewing a bunch of people who had nothing but stories about it, with zero provinence, nearly a century later is just bad research. The best source you cited above was Hap Navarro and he would have been 11 years when this fight took place. Were the two nieces you interviewed even born yet? Again, if you actually stood by your word you wouldnt have deleted your post.

What a joke. You just deleted it within the last 24 hours so you know exactly which post Im talking about. Its the same post you deleted my comment on for doing nothing more than repeating the facts exactly as the ringside observers stated them. Ha! Way to stand behind your work LOL.

I've only posted from my own personal FB account to promote my book in the last week, so once again, not sure what supposed deleted post you're referring to. Nobody responded other then with will wishes in the replies. You can type whatever 'facts' you want. You're just another in a disturbing line of creepy keyboard pounders who haven't done one iota of the research I've done, and are content to refuse to acknowledge that Baer was anything but a sterling fellow. Done here.

Cat you are lying. We both know it. You have posts about your book going back to March The only post youve deleted is the one we are talking about. You know it. I know it.

Or is that another Cat Johnson writing a book about Frankie Campbell who calls herself “Frankies Gal” (thats whats creepy)…

So to be clear, your book wont pretend the fight was fixed in Baers favor, Irwin was corrupt, Baer was a heartless murderer, etc etc? That was just the other Cat Johnson saying those things. Fair enough. I mean, if Im lying or mistaken then those things wont be in your book correct? In black and white for all to see?
