Re: Cory Spinks vs Shawn Porter
close fight, spinks was a skillful boxer as he showed beating mayorga, judah, and taking jermain taylor close well above his best weight. quick and slick
not exactly the strongest guy though and those guys may have given him more time to think than porter would. porter may be able to body him enough for a tight decision

Porter bum rushed and fouled the hell out of everyone.
Judah and taylor dont fight anything like that. Mayorga was aggressive but not a smothering style like porter. Plus mayorga won that fight imo
It would look like the alexander and mainaggi fights porter won easily. Porter had a tougher time with guys that could gurt him coming in (brook, thurman, spece, crawford) - spinks couldnt crack an egg

Re: Cory Spinks vs Shawn Porter
cory was a bigger guy than them (lost a split for unified mw title, world champ at 154, taller, etc) and wouldnt get manhandled easily enough to just be some blowout job. little paulie was by far an exception in porter's record too. all sorts of unspectacular fighters faced porter and werent wrecked. sebastian formella wasnt even wrecked. the alexander fight you mention wasnt a wrecking. ugas isnt a big hitter either and he wasnt wrecked, mayve shoulda won the deciison in fact. faded julio diaz twice wasnt wrecked. phil lo greco and ray robinson went the distance. granados was competitive in a distnace fight.etc
i thought cory deserved the win over mayorga

Yep. He lost to some guy named Vlad Panin couple of weeks ago. Soon as he got hit, he got dropped. Then, started appealing to the ref that he got hit behind the ear. Ref didn't buy and counted him out. Sad scene. Devon had a decent resume. Although, I thought he should've lost to my guy Kotelnik.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑17 Jun 2024, 20:33 damn dev alexander is 27-9-1 these days, held on too long

P.S. As far as Spinks-Porter - I actually think you both make solid arguments either way. But I agree with Margaret, that Spinks likely wouldn't have been easily roughed up. He had more pop in his fists, than Paulie.
And, if I recall, Spinks used to rehydrate majorly between the weigh-in and fight night. So, physically, he was a solid guy too.
As for Spinks-Mayorga bout - I haven't watched that one in a while. Maybe, it makes sense to go back and score it round-by-round) What I clearly remember, though, is that ref was on Mayorga's case too much. He made a couple of very controversial point deductions.

Re: Cory Spinks vs Shawn Porter
I think Mayorga would have had a Split Draw but he cost himself two points. It was a Majority Decision for Spinks and Mayorga had two points deducted (hitting after the bell and holding-and-hitting). 114-114, 114-112 (Spinks), 117-110(Spinks). I felt Mayorga had the better fight overall. Plus Spinks went down in the 12th and it was called a slip/push, which is debatable.

Re: Cory Spinks vs Shawn Porter
I thought Mayorga deserved the nod against Spinks here since that's become the side talk of this thread. I think I had it by 1 point for Mayorga.
But as someone already said, We ain't talking about Mayorga here. Porter may not pack the punch of Mayorga, but he's a much smoother operator, and knows how to apply his pressure much more effectively. I think Porter would've taken a wide UD here over Cory or possibly even stopped him late in the bout.
It would likely be somewhat competitive early, but I think Porter's pressure would start taking over more and more as it went along, plus Porter's confidence would increase as he begins to realize that even if Spinks hits him with a good shot, it won't do much damage so there's not much to fear.
Long way of saying. Porter wins.

Re: Cory Spinks vs Shawn Porter
Spinks vs Porter would go the distance. Spinks probably would have some success outboxing Porter early on, but as has been said, he didn’t have the power to keep Porter off him. Spinks would be able to clinch a lot though, and Porter is so crude and inaccurate, some judges might not see it as effective aggression. Spinks might tire and get stunned late, losing the last couple of rounds, tilting the score in Porter’s favor. Porter by split decision in a snoozer.
Re: Cory Spinks vs Shawn Porter
Either Spinks or Porter would take a decision in a close fight.
Re: Cory Spinks vs Shawn Porter
Spinks was fast and smooth but to me, always looked like he had an air of fragility.
Porter was quick, rough and packed a decent punch.
Could see Spinks leading but, gradually, being worn down and possibly stopped late on. If it goes the distance and bar any knockdowns, I'd fancy Spinks to take the W, though.
