WBA orders Eimantas Stanionis to face Shakhram Giyasov
Eimantas Stanionis was elevated from secondary to full titlist after Terence Crawford moved to 154
Less than a month after upgrading him from “world” to “super” champion following Terence Crawford’s exit, the WBA has given welterweight titlist Eimantas Stanionis 30 days to negotiate with mandatory challenger Shakhram Giyasov.
Stanionis (15-0, 9 KOs) has struggled to stay active these last few years, though that’s not entirely his fault. He lost quite a bit of time trying to stage a showdown with Vergil Ortiz, who withdrew from two of their three planned dates while Stanionis forced a one-month postponement of his own due to appendicitis. His first appearance since April 2022 saw him take a comfortable decision over Gabriel Maestre in May.
Aside from the likes of Bakhodir Jalolov and Hasanboy Dusmatov, whose slow professional advancement can be chalked up to their continued focus on amateur glory, Giyasov (16-0, 9 KOs) has proven among the least ambitious members of the Uzbek invasion. He’s been treading water for ages, most recently scraping out a split decision over Miguel Parra in July.
Fighting Stanionis would be a long-overdue sink-or-swim test, though “Wonder Boy” could instead cash in his no. 1 spot with the WBO and challenge Brian Norman Jr instead. Should that occur, WBA no. 2 Conor Benn would presumably get the call because the WBA is and always will be the WBA.

No offense meant to Stanionis but it is silly to upgrade someone to “super champion” (which in itself is a silly title) because the person above you vacates and you haven’t really fought any of the top guys.

Eimantas Stanionis-Shakhram Giyasov purse bid pushed back to November 19
The purse bid for the WBA welterweight title fight between Eimantas Stanionis and mandatory challenger Shakhram Giyasov has been postponed until November 19 in order to allow more time for both teams to negotiate, according to the sanctioning body.
The original purse bid date of November 8 was announced last week. The fight was initially ordered on September 19, but the camps were not able to reach a deal after a month, according to the WBA.
Now they are trying again with negotiations.
If this does wind up going to purse bid, then the minimum bid would be $150,000, with the winning amount to be split between Stanionis (75 percent) and Giyasov (25 percent).
Stanionis became the WBA’s secondary “regular” titleholder by virtue of his April 2022 split decision win over Radzhab Butaev. He made his first defense about two years later, winning a unanimous decision over Gabriel Maestre on the May 2024 undercard of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Jaime Munguia. Stanionis was then elevated to the primary titleholder after Terence Crawford vacated his WBA belt in August.
Stanionis, a 30-year-old from Kaunas, Lithuania, is 15-0 (9 KOs).
Giyasov, 16-0 (9 KOs), is a 31-year-old originally from Bukhara, Uzbekistan, and now fighting out of Brooklyn, New York. He was the welterweight silver medalist in the 2016 Olympics and turned pro in 2018.
Giyasov scored some early victories over a pair of recognizable, if faded, names: Emanuel Taylor (UD10) and Darleys Perez (KO1), both in 2019. More recently, he won a pair of elimination bouts to earn this opportunity, outpointing the 27-0 Harold Eduardo Calderon in June 2023 and taking an 11th-round unanimous technical decision over Pablo Cesar Cano in February. In July, Giyasov took a split decision over Miguel Parra.

Eimantas Stanionis and Shakhram Giyasov agree to deal, WBA says date TBA
Sometimes an impending deadline is the best catalyst for action.
That proved to be true for the fight between WBA welterweight titleholder Eimantas Stanionis and mandatory challenger Shakhram Giyasov. After negotiations had failed to produce an agreement, the WBA was scheduled to hold a purse bid on November 19.
But instead of holding a purse bid, the WBA announced that Stanionis and Giyasov have agreed to a deal. This news was first reported by Jake Donovan of RingTV.com.
Per the WBA, the date is TBA: “The contracts and details about the fight [...] will be sent in due time [...] with the confirmation of the date, venue and other related elements.”
The fight was initially ordered on September 19, but the camps were not able to reach a deal after a month. That led to purse bid being called, which was originally supposed to be held on November 8, then was postponed until November 19 in order to allow more time for both teams to negotiate.
