Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis and Karen Chukhadzhian

The IBF has scheduled a purse bid on September 3rd for the rematch between Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis and Karen Chukhadzhian. IBF welterweight champion Boots Ennis (32-0, 29 KOs) is still negotiating a unification fight with WBO champ Brian Norman Jr. If that fight happens, the IBF mandatory Chukhadzhian will have to take a backseat and wait.

Jake Donovan is reporting the news of the IBF purse bid for the Ennis vs. Chukhadzhian purse bid on September 3rd. Boots already beat Chukhadzhian by a 12-round unanimous decision in January 2023, winning by the scores 120-108 x 3.

Chukhadzhian (24-2, 13 KOs) bounced back from that defeat, beating three lower-level fighters to work his way to a rematch. This time, it’ll be for a world title. Fans are eager to see Boots and Norman Jr. (26-0, 20 KOs) fight a unification match. That one should have a lot of slugging involved.

Promoter Eddie Hearn needs to deliver the Norman Jr. fight for Boots because it would be a shame if he’s stuck with the rematch with Karan, which no one wants to see.

Ennis recently signed with Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing. In his first fight with them, he fought veteran David Avanesyan on July 13th, knocking him out in the fifth round at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. Ennis outdid Terence Crawford, who had knocked out Avanesyan with disintegrating gloves in the sixth round in December 2022.

The 154-Pound Question

If Boots can’t get the fight with Brian Norman Jr. for the unification, he needs to think seriously about moving up to 154 because he’s wasting his time staying at 147, trying to slowly round up all four belts to equal Crawford’s feat of becoming undisputed. Crawford only had to beat two people to capture the four belts, defeating Jeff Horn and Errol Spence.

Ennis wants to quickly pick up the four titles before he moves up to 154, but it might not happen as fast as he’d like. Hearn will need to overpay to get WBC champion Mario Barrios and WBA champ Eimantas Stanionis to agree to fight Boots.

Karen Chukhadzhian promoters outbid Matchroom for Jaron Ennis title fight

Jaron “Boots” Ennis is set to make an impressive sum of money if he accepts his much-reviled mandatory rematch against Karen Chukhadzhian, though not from the expected source. Jake Donovan reports that Chukhadzhian’s promoters, P2M Box Promotions, outbid Matchroom Boxing by around half a million dollars for the rights to stage the bout.

Per IBF regulations, Ennis (32-0, 29 KO) will receive 65% of the winning bid, which totaled “just over” $2 million. That’s assuming, of course, that he goes through with it; Eddie Hearn claims that fellow welterweight titlists Brian Norman Jr, Eimantas Stanionis, and Mario Barrios all turned down fights with “Boots” despite alleged six-figure paydays. It wouldn’t be terribly surprising to see Ennis just ditch the belt and join Vergil Ortiz Jr at 154, where the elite seem much more willing to trade hands.

Then again, that’s quite a bit of money to face someone he’s already dominated. Chukhadzhian (24-2, 13 KO) became the only man in Ennis’ last 23 fights to take him the distance and did relatively well for himself, but failed to take a round or put Ennis in any real trouble.

Either way, we should find out very shortly.

Jesse Rodriguez vs Pedro Guevara official for November 9th in Philadelphia

When discussing Juan Francisco Estrada’s planned move to bantamweight, I mentioned that with his fellow titlists occupied, this was an opportunity for WBC super flyweight champion Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez to take care of his mandatory obligation. Turns out that will be the case, as Jake Donovan reports Mauricio Sulaiman confirms that Rodriguez is set to meet interim champion Pedro Guevara on a November 9th Jaron “Boots” Ennis show in Philadelphia.

Following a two-fight stint at 112 that saw him beat Cristian Gonzalez for the vacant WBO title and batter IBF titlist Sunny Edwards eight months later, Rodriguez (20-0, 13 KO) returned to 115 to finish Estrada in violent fashion this past June. Guevara (42-4-1, 22 KO) isn’t on “El Gallo’s” level, but his credentials are as legit as they come; he’s a former champ at 108, has never been stopped, and edged out Andrew Moloney in hostile territory in May.

The pair should make for an extremely watchable fight while we wait for unification opportunities to arise again.

Jaron Ennis-Karen Chukhadzhian and Jesse Rodriguez-Pedro Guevera set for November 9

Jaron “Boots” Ennis will defend his IBF welterweight title in a rematch with his mandatory challenger Karen Chukhadzhian on November 9, when Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez will defend his WBC super-flyweight title against Pedro Guevara.

Ennis stopped David Avanesyan to make the first defence of his title in July at the Wells Fargo Center in his home city of Philadelphia, and he will return to the same venue for his rematch with Ukraine’s Chukhadzhian, 28 and who he eased to victory over in January 2023.

Rodriguez in June stopped Juan Francisco Estrada to enhance his reputation as one of the world’s finest fighters; his contest with Guevara will be used to build the appeal of the match-up between Ennis and Chukhadzhian that Ennis and promoters Matchroom had hoped to avoid.

“I’m excited to be back headlining in my city again,” said the 27-year-old Ennis. “I’m ready to continue dominating the division, making a big statement and showing everyone why I’m the best welterweight in the world.

“It’s time to have some fun, keep crushing whoever is in front of me, put on a beautiful, dominant, crushing performance in front of my family, friends and supporters, while defending and retaining my title in spectacular fashion. It’s my time.”

“I will have enough time to prepare and show a beautiful and spectacular fight,” said Chukhadzhian. “Champ, get ready for the battle, it will be hot.”

Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn had hoped to deliver for the talented Ennis a unification fight with Brian Norman Jnr, who defends his WBO title against Derrieck Cuevas on November 8.

“On November 9 tune in to DAZN, get your tickets and witness another exciting performance,” said Rodriguez, 24. “My belts aren’t going anywhere.”

Guevara is nine years Rodriguez’s senior, and he said: “I am very happy to have this opportunity to fight Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez.

“I am telling you right away that I am going to prepare to put on a war and a great show and to win on November 9 in Philadelphia. I am going with everything and for everything, Viva Mexico and Viva Mazatlan, Sinaloa.”

“Boots’ return to Philly in July was a spectacular night, the fans and the city got right behind him, and I can’t wait to return there and keep building this superstar on his doorstep,” said Hearn, who also recently agreed promotional terms with Shakur Stevenson.

“And what can you say about Bam? His win over Estrada will be one of the performances of the year when the awards are handed out, and he rightly landed in the top five of the pound-for-pound list after it. Jesse is a bonafide superstar in his own right, so to have him join Jaron on this card is a massive treat for Philly’s great fight fans – and there’s plenty more great talents to be added to a night that is not to be missed.”

Raymond Ford, Khalil Coe and Ernesto Mercado added to Philadelphia bill

The Philadelphia card co-headlined by Jarron “Boots” Ennis and Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez will also feature Raymond Ford, Khalil Coe and Ernesto Mercado.

The Saturday, November 9, bill at the Wells Fargo Center will see Ford return for the first time since Nick Ball relieved him of his WBA featherweight title in Saudi Arabia in June and the Camden fighter meets Orlando Gonzalez.

Coe is paired with Manuel Gallegos while “Tito” Mercado will make his debut for promoters Matchroom.

In the headliners, “Boots” faces Karen Chukhadzhian in a rematch while Rodriguez defends his super-featherweight title against Pedro Guevara.

Ford-Gonzalez marks the former champion’s rise to junior lightweight and, now 15-1-1 (8 KOs), the 25-year-old meets (23-2 12 KOs) Puerto Rican Gonzalez.

“All the champs at 130lbs better watch out because I'm coming for all of those straps,” said Ford. “I don't have to do a whole lot of talking. People know what I can do when I'm at the top of my game. Right now, I'm in Colorado working hard and people are going to see the end result on November 9. Two-weight world champ coming soon, no doubt.

“This is my first fight so close to home since I made my pro debut so it's great to be back there and I know there's a lot of people going to come out and support.”

Said Gonzalez: “I’d like to thank ProBox, Garry [Jonas], Chris [Glover] and Daniel [Rubin], and Matchroom for the opportunity. Ray Ford is a world-level fighter and I’m going to show I’m on his level and beyond. It’s going to be a great fight.”

Coe, who is 9-0-1 (7 KOs), fought on the undercard of Boots’ Philly homecoming win over David Avanesyan in July at the same venue, stopping Kwame Ritter in two rounds.

His Mexican opponent, Gallegos – 20-2-1 (17 KOs) – returns for the first time since defeat to Diego Pacheco in July 2023

“November 9, Philly stand-up,” said Coe. “We back. ‘Big Steppa’ – coming through. Fighting in Philly is like being home for me, and having the opportunity to put on another show in front of all my family and friends is extra special and I am ready to put on another spectacular performance.

“I believe that there is no better prospect in boxing than me, and on November 9, Manuel Gallegos is about to find that out the hard way.”

Gallegos countered: “I’m hugely motivated and can’t wait to fight in this weight division where I feel great.”

Mercado, now 16-0 (15 KOs), and one of the sport’s bright hopes, is 22 and looking for his fourth win inside the distance, in a bout scheduled for 10 rounds.

Austin “Ammo” Williams will also fight in an eight-rounder, having lost for the first time in June, against middleweight contender Hamzah Sheeraz.

Also on the bill, 2-0 (1 KO) super flyweight Dennis Thompson and 5-0 (3 KOs) welterweight Ismail Muhammad (5-0 3 KOs) return after appearing on the Ennis-Avanesyan bill. Young prospect and Shakur Stevenson’s cousin, Zaquin Moses, will also make his pro debut at junior lightweight.

“This is going to be some night in Philadelphia,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “Boots and Bam are two of the very best that there is, and we have a brilliant supporting cast before those two pound-for-pound stars strut their stuff.

“Ray is back and is ready to meet any champion at 130lbs to become a two-weight king, while Khalil is like a runaway train right now, he’s going to be knocking very loudly on the door of the contenders at light heavyweight.

“Ammo showed incredible guts and heart against Hamzah, and he will have learned so much from that night to go again in his career, and I cannot wait to let Tito off the leash and showcase his immense talent on the big stage. It’s another big night for Dennis and Ismail fighting for Boots Promotions, and watch out for Zaquin making his pro debut, there’s a massive buzz around this young man.”

Just watched the first fight there, complete dominance from Ennis, doesn't exactly whet the appetite for the rematch but that's the IBF for you, Chukhadzhian moved well ,caused Ennis problems trying to find openings but Ennis hurt him to the body late on and Chukhadzhian was pretty much running, he didn't win a round, Ennis seemed happy enough to box him

Check out some of what Ennis had to say below.

Ennis on his rematch with Chukhadzhian
“I fought him before, I beat him before. I know what I got to do. We’re going to make it work. I got something for him.

“I approach this fight just like I take every fight. You know, just stay focused, locked in and put the hard work in and when you put the hard work in the results show.”

On if it difficult for him to be motivated by this rematch having swept Chukhadzhian the first time around
“It’s not difficult. I watched the fight three or four times and I seen a few things that I could’ve done better. Like it wasn’t him, it was me, me being an airhead for real, for real. Going in there and being an airhead and not really listening. This time around it’s going to be way different.”

On if he has plans to move to 154 anytime soon
“We’ll see. Right now everything going good at welterweight. I’m feeling good and ready to rock and roll and I want to be undisputed at 147.”

On Usyk vs Fury 2
“That’s a great fight. I feel like that fight’s still 50/50 but I’ll go with Usyk again.”
