Alycia Baumgardner vs Delfine Persoon headlines all-women’s boxing event on Sept. 27

Alycia Baumgardner returns to action in September.

Alycia Baumgardner will defend her WBC super featherweight title against Delfine Persoon on Sept. 27 in Atlanta, headlining an all-women’s fight card broadcast on Brinx.TV and Fubo Sports.

The event is promised to be “groundbreaking” and “set in an immersive world environment,” which sounds like city-slickin’ techno-nonsense to me, but all the same there will be a fight card with boxing matches.

Baumgardner (15-1, 7 KOs) was still the undisputed champion last we knew, also holding the WBA, IBF, and WBO titles, but those are not mentioned in the press release for the bout. The 30-year-old has not fought since July 2023 when she beat Christina Linardatou, after which she failed a drug test. She denied intentionally taking any banned substances.

The WBC “cleared” Baumgardner in January, at least of intentional usage of banned substances.

The 39-year-old Persoon (49-3, 19 KOs) is best known for a pair of close, controversial losses to Katie Taylor in 2019-20, and is a former lightweight champion. She hasn’t done much of note since the second Taylor fight, but she’s had a good career and is still a contender at 130.

The fights will be broadcast free, which is cool, and if we’re all being real, this is right about the standard for dealing with doping issues in the sport, no matter who yells about it and how loudly they proclaim they’re very serious about consequences. You really have to fail repeatedly for anyone to actually do much of anything about it, and Baumgardner’s been sat a year now, so she’s back in business.

Global Combat Collective LLC wins purse bid Baumgardner vs. Persoon

The WBC held a purse bid this Friday, March 15, from Mexico City, for the rights to the fight between the WBC super featherweight champion, Alycia Baumgardner from the United States and Belgian Delfine Persoon.

This attractive fight will be promoted by Global Combat Collective LLC, who won with a bid of $500,000 USD.

For this fight, one of the most innovative rules will apply and that is undoubtedly an important incentive for our boxers, the 10% bonus for the winner.

That is, the winner, in addition to being recognized as WBC Green and Gold Champion and earning the corresponding salary percentage, will take home $50,000 USD of the total purse, thus giving additional interest.

Alycia has a record of 15 wins and only one loss, while Delfine has 59 wins and three losses.

Sandy Ryan vs Mikaela Mayer set for September 27th in New York

Sandy Ryan holds the WBO welterweight title

Chris Mannix reports that after dropping two questionable decisions on English soil, Mikaela Mayer’s next title bid will see her challenge WBO welterweight champion Sandy Ryan on September 17th at the Theater at Madison Square Garden.

Amusingly, this once again pits Mayer (19-2, 5 KO) against rival Alycia Baumgardner, who faces Delfine Persoon in Atlanta that same evening.

Ryan (7-1-1, 3 KOs) suffered a tough loss to veteran Erica Anabella Farias in her fourth pro fight, but has since come into her own, avenging that defeat soon after and beating undefeated Marie Pierre Houle for the belt eight months later. A subsequent bid for undisputed glory saw her settle for a bogus draw with Jessica McCaskill, after which she returned to the win column by thrashing Terri Harper last March.

This is just a rock-solid fight. Mayer was deeply unfortunate to not get the win against Baumgardner and Natasha Jonas; she remains one of the best and most consistently entertaining female boxers in the game. She and Ryan should put on a quality scrap.

With the history between the two, I wouldn't be surprised by a rematch should they both win or both lose. Both fights between two top 5 women which is good.

To be fair it is one of the best fights out there in womens boxing and both are in their natural weight divisions. Even when she was boxing as a lightweight champ Persoon would routinely weigh in well under that 135lb limit. Baumgardner is one of the few women in boxing where you aren't suprised when you see her score a knockout victory or put her opponents down. Should be a good one.

Clash of heads steals thunder from returning Alycia Baumgardner

Junior lightweight undisputed champion Alycia Baumgardner’s return to the ring ended in a disappointing no-contest after a head clash in the fourth round of her bout against Delfine Persoon at Lux Studio in Atlanta.

Baumgardner (15-1, 7 KOs), from Detroit, had been dominant until the accidental collision, which occurred before the conclusion of the fourth round and resulted in the lack of an official decision.

With a new lead trainer, Ramon Matthews Jr., in her corner, Baumgardner, 30, looked sharp from the outset. She kept Belgium’s 39-year-old Persoon (49-3, 19 KOs) at bay with her jab in the first round and scored a knockdown with a left hook that caused Persoon’s glove to touch the canvas.

Baumgardner continued her aggressive pace in the second round, pinning Persoon on the ropes and landing flurries, including a right hand that visibly rocked her opponent. Despite Persoon’s trademark pressure in the third round, Baumgardner’s power and timing limited Persoon’s output, making it clear that Baumgardner was in control.

The fourth round saw Baumgardner land more clean right hands and showcased her superior speed and sharpness. However, the decisive clash of heads occurred after Baumgardner threw a right hand and Persoon tried to counter. The resulting cut on Persoon’s face led the ringside physician to stop the fight, ruling Persoon unable to continue.

The bout was Baumgardner’s first after a year-long absence following a positive test for a banned substance in July 2023. Baumgardner denied any wrongdoing, and after an investigation, the WBC cleared her of intentional ingestion. The Association of Boxing Commissions lifted Baumgardner’s suspension in March 2024, allowing her return to the ring.
