Leonard clear UD
Re: Sugar Ray Leonard versus Mike McCallum
SRL would outbox the Bodysnatcher behind his jabs and combinations on the outside without engaging him on the inside to take a decision.

Mike McCallum by knockout in 12 rounds. A complete boxer that at 154lbs, was much more stronger than Sugar Ray Leonard.
McCallum doesn't get a lot of love in this forum.

I fully agree with you there.
But in this thread I don’t think it’s about a lack of love for a great fighter, it’s just a case that most see Leonard as better.
But, you’re right, McCallum was a lot better than he is given credit for.
Big names avoided him for good reasons - risk and limited return

Re: Sugar Ray Leonard versus Mike McCallum
I think that Mike McCallum was as good and skilled as the other 4 or 5 Kings, that's if you include the great Wilfred Benitez.
He was strong for that weight class. Perfect. He just didn't get the chance to show his skills against the 4 Kings.
Roberto Duran didn't want to defend his WBA World Jr Middleweight Crown against him and chose to fight Thomas Hearns for more money.
Hearns and McCallum were stablemates at Kronk Gym. But, afterwards, Mike wanted to fight The Hitman and trainer Emanuel Steward forbid it.
McCallum also claimed that Marvelous and Sugar Ray ducked him. He was high risk low reward type of fighter. Maybe he came to the 80s decade party too late?

Mccallum gets his proper due. Great fighter just not as good as an all timer like srl
He was great like james toney was great. But james was embarassed by a greater fighter. There are levels and leonard was the best of that era

Re: Sugar Ray Leonard versus Mike McCallum
Sugar Ray Leonard was best at his respective weight class. So was Mike McCallum at super welterweight. He was as skilled as any member of the 5 Kings.Jeff_lacy_ko wrote: ↑05 Oct 2024, 22:50 Mccallum gets his proper due. Great fighter just not as good as an all timer like srl

Re: Sugar Ray Leonard versus Mike McCallum
Everybody was better at their respective weight classes. Mike McCallum, to me, was much more complete than Sugar Ray Leonard. Sugar Ray had much more speed. Being faster doesn't make you better. McCallum's ring IQ was as good as anybody's.Jeff_lacy_ko wrote: ↑06 Oct 2024, 11:13I agree but leonard does everything better than Mike. Re: Sugar Ray Leonard versus Mike McCallum
I thought MCCallum barely edged Herol Graham and, of course, Kalambay beat Mike and lost very close in the rematch. imo, SRL was a lot better than either of them. SRL by decision.

Re: Sugar Ray Leonard versus Mike McCallum
Leonard would have won. Excuses would have been made for McCallum.
Re: Sugar Ray Leonard versus Mike McCallum
Leonard would utilize his superior hand and foot speed and avoid letting McCallum find his rhythm by staying out of the trenches. He'd pepper the Body Snatcher with alot of 4 punch combinations and then move away until the next opportunity in route to something like a 117-112 victory.

Re: Sugar Ray Leonard versus Mike McCallum
Yeah.. if hagler couldnt cleanly beat him at 160 after a long layoff, mike isnt beating him prime for prime at 154
