James Thunder vs Butterbean
In a 10 rounder.
Imo, This bout would be more competitive than what most people would initially percieve.
Butterbean weighed varying amounts during his 70 some odd bouts carear.
I remember when he looked his most impressive. When he weighed in at 305 and he knocked out that Strongman in the first round.
I remember James Thunder when he ko'd "Crawford Grimsley" in 13 seconds.
I also remember when Thunder got Ko'd by this one particular boxer who had a very subpar record.
This bout would be reminiscent of Max Baer-Tony Galento.
I'd pick Thunder to get a 5th round tko in an entertaining and amusing slugfest.
Call me crazy but I actually wouldn't be terribly surprised if The Bean caught Thunder and then knocked him cold, just like that one Journeyman did to Thunder.
Jimmy Thunder was definitely a classic hot and cold type.
Reminiscent to Max Baer and also reminiscent to Henry Cooper.
The Bean was obviously reminiscent to Two Ton Tony Galento.

Either Thunder takes a decision or stopping the Bean late.
Re: James Thunder vs Butterbean
Thunder KO. Bean lost to a Something Rose who was about 1-7.

Mitchell Rose. 1-6 going into the bout, but he was definitely a spoiler type at the time.
Terrible Teddy Sanders and Ben Serrano were also notorious spoiler types(Capable, but with bad records) back in the early 1980's, well known for pulling off surprisingly impressive performances in certain bouts.
Ray Mercer fought a 7-14 spoiler type boxer(Marion Wilson)and looked like he should've gotten the L, but was gifted a draw.
Eric Esch, aka-Butterbean, was only 15-0 going into that bout, and that little undefeated record was built up in a mere 1 year or so, so he was still essentially in that learning the craft phase.

I'm still picking Thunder as I'm not sure Butterbean beat anyone as good as Thunder. But I looked those guys up and I remember Marion Wilson. Those guys with losing records, good chins, sometimes upset undefeated fighters. Very interesting category of boxer. Wilson had a losing record but I think was stopped only once and that was on a DQ.1286809 wrote: ↑01 Oct 2024, 04:44Mitchell Rose. 1-6 going into the bout, but he was definitely a spoiler type at the time.

At first I thought Thunder for sure. Then I remember him getting decked by Chris Byrd.

He was also battered unconscious by Mike “The Bounty” Hunter inside of 4 rounds, and Mike was not exactly a killer puncher either.Ambling Alp II wrote: ↑02 Oct 2024, 14:43 At first I thought Thunder for sure. Then I remember him getting decked by Chris Byrd.
Chris Byrd had a better KO ratio than Hunter.
If Bean could tag Jimmy, he’d finish him

Thunder would absolutely mop the floor with him.
Re: James Thunder vs Butterbean
I figure Thunder could've beat the sh*t out of Butterbean. Questionable chin or not he's several levels above Butterbean in terms of skill, and he'd hit him probably 5 or 6 times for every shot that Butterbean got in. I suspect for a decent Pro like Thunder he'd be able to block most of Butterbean's shots as well. He wasn't exactly fast, and often needed the benefit of fighting absolute shite opponents to get his big shots in.
Thunder may not be a world beater, but he was at one time a legitimate fringe contender at least. That's more than Butterbean ever did.

Byrd may have had a better ko %, but Hunter's speed generated some power and I think he was a much harder puncher than Byrd.Les Norton wrote: ↑15 Oct 2024, 00:08He was also battered unconscious by Mike “The Bounty” Hunter inside of 4 rounds, and Mike was not exactly a killer puncher either.Ambling Alp II wrote: ↑02 Oct 2024, 14:43 At first I thought Thunder for sure. Either way, if Bean caught Thunder he could have stopped him. I'd favor Thunder but say that BB was a live dog.

Re: James Thunder vs Butterbean
thunder should smash him, probably brutally and early
that said, i think bean actually did have some real power - well, at least enough to hurt chinny guys. despite his size and freak show status, he could wing the shots in pretty well, he was just sorely lacking pretty much everywhere except offense. not impossible punchers chance that he gets thunder in some trouble
