Fighters who put First Round KOs behind them

Post by garethhop »

Just thinking about Frazer Clarke and what he might do next.

Even ignoring the injury, the mental impact and his late stage of career, there are very few who have ever thrived after a 1st round ko.

Emile Griffith and John Ruiz is all I can bring to mind,

Anyone more recent?

Daisuke Naito did pretty well after Wonjongkam iced him in 34 seconds back 2002

This one's kinda interesting, seeing that both fought this weekend - Masamichi Yabuki was stopped in 1 round by Seigo Yuri Akui back in 2018

Linares - stopped in 1 by Salgado, had a solid career afterwards (though was always regarded as chinny)

Koichi Wajima KO's by Pedro Adigue, went on to have a great career in the 1970's

Hiroshi Kawashima KO's by Mitsuo Kawashima in 1989, had a solid reign as the WBC 115lbs champion in the 1990's

Daniel Ponce De Leon bounced back PRETTY well from losing to Juanma Lopez in 2008

Kendall Holt stopped in a round by Thomas Davis later wen ton to be a major player at 140

Get the feeling there might be surprising number of these tbh, especially from 112-140

Khan is the first to come to mind. Crazy fight to take at that stage of his career. He was positioned perfectly after it.

Earnie Shavers had some good performances after being KO’d in 1 by Quarry.

It’s a short list of fighters to have multiple good wins after being KO’d in 1. Shows how tough it will be for Clarke unfortunately.

Trevor Brebick was KO'd in a round by Bernado Mercado.

Floyd Patterson did pretty well after back-to-back first round losses to Sonny Liston.

Jack Dempsey lost in a round to Fireman Jim Flynn a couple of years before he fought Willard.

miguel berchelt was ko'd in a minute or two, then went on a nice world title run

at a lower level nick flaz is on a nice run after being ko'd in 1 https://boxrec.com/en/box-pro/735644

more so than other kos, early kos can be kinda fluky/bad luck............getting caught cold is defo a real thing. adonis stevenson was ko'd in 2 as well early in his career

john molina was stopped in 44 seconds by antonio demarco, then went 8 with crawford and 11 with mattyhse (dropped mat twice) , along with some good wins

lotsa cases too where a guy is hurt/dropped early, then takes shots fine throughout the rest of the fight

Good correction, I remembered the Bey knockout being round 1.

I don't think Michael gets enough credit for that win.

ya it was pretty sensational, kalambay was a very good fighter who was never stopped by anyone else despite fighting many top opponents. he did well after that loss too

Khan is the best example, chilling KO, another example of FW doing a great job of promoting a fella in the aftermath

really? people wank over it every time Nunn's name is mentioned and it is also a regular mention for 'best first round KO'
