Derek Chisora vs. Jarrell Miller - who wins?

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Jarrell Miller: ‘It looks like Derek Chisora in Manchester in January’

Jarrell Miller has confirmed that he is in discussions to fight Derek Chisora in January.

The 40-year-old Chisora revived his career when in July he so unexpectedly outpointed Joe Joyce.

The following month Miller, previously stopped by Daniel Dubois, drew with Andy Ruiz, leaving him on course to fight Chisora in Manchester in their combined attempts to return to contention in a heavyweight division in a relative state of flux.

That there is so little suggestion of them again joining promotions associated with the powerbrokers of Saudi Arabia demonstrates that they remain far from considered among the elite, but at 36 Miller, unlike Chisora, is perhaps a fighter close to the peak of his powers, and he told BS: “That’s the biggest one we’re talking about right now – Chisora. It’s not locked in yet; the deal’s not signed yet. But there are definitely talks.

“We’re gonna see; we’re gonna see. We don’t have the arena locked down yet, but it’s looking like Manchester in January.

“I love it. I think it’s a great fight. I don’t think it’s an easy one but I think it’s a win. I’ve gotta go in there and beat my boy up.

“It’s so funny – as you get older in the sport of boxing, your fellow boxers become mates, I would say. It’s hard to avoid everybody at the top eventually [even if you like them] – some of us have gotta fight. I’ve a level of respect for Chisora. I like him, as much as I like Andy [Ruiz], so hopefully I can fight him.

“I told people, ‘If Chisora’s in shape, and his chin can stand up, I think he can beat Joe Joyce; Joe Joyce is very slow, he’s not very active, and so Derek could get rid of him’. Chisora’s a little past his prime, but sometimes an old dog got tricks, man. He’s an old dog that got tricks.

“I worry about him. He got two hands and two feet like me, so I’m worried about Chisora [fighting on]. But I’ma train my ass off ‘cause if you give a dog a chance, he gonna bite you. The whole point is to go in there, and put a dog down.

“You might hear about it real soon, but the contract’s not signed yet.”

Miller has been working under Derek “Bozy” Ennis, the respected trainer and father of Jaron “Boots” Ennis, at his Philadelphia-based gym.

For a fighter who has served three drug bans his recruitment of Ennis – also recognised for his progress with the talented Cuban lightweight Andy Cruz – perhaps represents a new start, and he said: “It’s great. Bozy Ennis – it’s good, man. I like it. He’s one of the coaches on my team now. Bozy’s a good guy, man. I love the atmosphere – Philly and Brooklyn are very close by.

“Bozy’s a great addition to the team, man. Hard work; no bullshit. That’s the shit I like, man. I don’t like trainers that are trying to play it safe or are intimidated to throw it to a fighter ‘cause they’re afraid of losing their job. I’m from Brooklyn – if we ain’t cussing, ‘Motherfucker you gotta run’, that don’t hit with me very well.

“It’s great. Feeding off their energy. It’s fun – the atmosphere’s fun – and it’s hard work. Those guys hitting the bag; I gotta hit the bag. They doing 10 rounds; I gotta do 12. It’s a great gym; a great atmosphere, man.

“Philly and Brooklyn are very similar, man. The only thing that changes is Philly cheesesteak and pizzas.

“One hundred per cent [it’s good for me to be in a different environment]. I drive an hour to be where I stay. I go to the Poconos [Mountains], and then an hour to the gym.”

I like this. Chisora breaks him down in the mid rounds or gasses before getting stopped late. Hopefully looks similar to Miller vs Browne but with a bit more skill.

Aye. And he's beaten Hrgovic and AJ. I'm not sure if Del would beat Miller. Who do you favour, mickey?

Miller. He stood up to a lot from Dubois and was very much in the fight for a lot of it.

It was a while ago so I might be remembering wrong but didn't Fury tell us that Miller's weak spot is body shots and we also know Chisora can keep the pressure that Dubois did. Chisora's very good at body shots and keeping the pressure. In my opinion, styles make fights. Wouldn't be surprised if Miller won, I just don't think he's very good. I don't even think Chisora's that good but there are levels in my opinion.

In his entire career, Chisora has been stopped by Fury, Haye and Whyte, taking Vitali, Pulev, Kabayel, Usyk and Parker to point losses, then wins over Joyce, Pulev and Takam. He's an unpredictable boxer.

Miller on the other side, went toe to toe with Browne. He also went toe it toe with Ruiz which is to seen whether it's a good or bad draw depending on future fights.

Miller is the unknown, I just don't think he's good, even if Chisora isn't good either.

Derek Chisora-Jarrell Miller looking likely for February 8

Heavyweights Derek Chisora and Jarrell Miller are on a collision course to box in Manchester in February.

Miller had told Boxing Scene’s Declan Warrington that was likely going to be his next move and reports and sources have subsequently speculated that February 8 is the favored date.

Chisora, 40, won a crowd-pleasing fight with Joe Joyce in July, while Miller fought Andy Ruiz to a draw in August, having been stopped by Daniel Dubois in December.

Chisora is 35-13 (23 KOs) and the victory against Joyce followed a win over Gerald Washington. That came on the heels of his one-sided loss to Tyson Fury in their third fight.

Miller, who is 36 and who has failed multiple drug tests in the past, is 26-1-2 (22 KOs).

Whatever you think of Del Boy, you can't accuse him of ducking a challenge. 300 plus pounds of Miller at Del's time of life is a big ask.

Sadly this is inevitable. I don't know how much sparring he does, but he's taken a lot of punishment from some of the best in fights alone.

Jarrell Miller won’t fight Derek Chisora as promotional dispute continues

The long and tumultuous relationship between Jarrell Miller and promoter Dmitriy Salita has bubbled up with another conflict – this time over a fight “Big Baby” was hoping to have with fellow heavyweight Derek Chisora in 2025.

Just days ago, it was reported that Miller vs Chisora could take place February 8 in Manchester.

That’s no longer the case.

“The fight with Chisora is off,” Miller posted on Instagram on Tuesday. “Chisora is a good dude. He wants to fight. I want to fight. The fight is off because of this little piece of shit named Dmitry Salita, the dirtiest human being I’ve ever met in my entire life, and I’ve been around a lot of dirty motherfuckers. But Salita is the worst human being that’s ever walked the planet. Him and his dirty-ass lawyer, John Wirt, are compulsive liars. My contract is up with them, but he’s exercising his first and last right of refusal and blatantly made up an entire story to try to get more money out of it.”

Miller said he also had to negotiate fights on his own behalf and criticized Salita for using Miller’s name to sign other fighters into his promotional company.

Salita responded with a statement sent via text from his publicist.

“I’ve promoted Jarrell Miller since the start of his career. Together we have achieved career high paydays for him, secured fights for him on every major broadcaster in the sport: HBO, Showtime, DAZN and (almost) ESPN. We secured a would-be life-changing opportunity for him to face Anthony Joshua. Most recently, we were disappointed to learn that he turned down the fight with Derek Chisora.

“For him to imply that I am a liar and a cheat, among other things, is not only categorically false, it is also hurtful personally and professionally. As a former professional fighter – having been on his side of the business for many years of my career – I pride myself on making sure Salita Promotions always does the right thing by the fighter. That will not change. And the fact is that I have honored my agreement with Jarrell from day [one] through today. And he should do the same.”

BS asked Salita about his promotion’s stance that Miller turned down the fight with Chisora, given that Miller said it was Salita’s company that prevented it from happening.

“I cannot go into the finer points of our agreement, but the fact is that Jarrell had the opportunity on two occasions in the past few days to say yes to the fight with Chisora and he refused,” Salita responded via a text from his publicist. “I fully supported the making of that matchup. And my whole team is disappointed that it was turned down.”

Miller has worked with Salita’s promotional company, now called Salita Promotions, for a long time. According to BoxRec, their first fight together was in 2011, in Miller’s second pro bout, back when Salita’s company was known as Star of David Promotions. In 2014, Miller signed a contract with the company, entering a co-promotional agreement with Star of David and Greg Cohen Promotions.

The relationship had apparently soured by 2016. Miller asserted that he was a free agent. Salita countered that this was not true. Miller remained with Salita and Cohen and continued to work his way toward a title shot.

And Miller landed one in 2019, signing to fight Anthony Joshua for three heavyweight titles. And then Miller tested positive for multiple banned substances and was pulled from the match. Instead, Andy Ruiz scored the payday, notched a stunning upset over Joshua and took home the belts.

This wasn’t Miller’s first time running afoul of drug tests either. He had also tested positive for a banned substance while competing as a kickboxer in 2014. Nor would it be his last time. He also failed a drug test ahead of a scheduled July 2020 bout with Jerry Forrest.

By the time of the Forrest fight, Miller had added a third promoter, Top Rank. But even that deal, announced in January 2020, wasn’t without drama.

“The three promoters, Miller and his new manager, James Prince, had finally agreed to all the terms and were due to sign the agreement,” boxing reporter Dan Rafael, then with ESPN, wrote at the time. “But after all the details had been ironed out, Salita went back to Top Rank chairman Bob Arum in an attempt to renegotiate elements of the agreement, multiple sources with knowledge of the situation told ESPN. An irate Arum washed his hands of the deal, but cooler heads eventually prevailed and they signed the original agreement. Miller was so upset by the situation in Atlantic City that, according to sources, he had a physical altercation with Salita, who has promoted Miller since early in his pro career in what has long been a rocky relationship.”

Miller returned to the ring in 2022 with a pair of victories. In March 2023, Miller defeated Lucas Browne on a show in the United Arab Emirates. By April 2023, he spoke of wanting to leave Salita.

In November 2023, Salita won a court case against Miller and was awarded more than $4.8 million in damages. Salita had accused Miller of breaching their promotional agreement, according to Scott Shaffer of BoxingTalk.com.

“Salita alleged that Miller breached the promotional contract by violating the agreement’s anti-doping provisions and also for making disparaging and derogatory statements about Salita,” Shaffer wrote. “[The court] took the amount Salita would have received for fighting Joshuia, and then averaged potential outcomes based on Miller defeating or losing to Joshua.”

The hits kept coming for Miller. In December 2023, he suffered his first pro loss, getting stopped in the final seconds of his fight with Daniel Dubois in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

This past January, Miller was arrested and accused of stealing a truck via carjacking at a dealership in Florida. In April, prosecutors declined to pursue the case further, according to court records reviewed by BS.

Miller last boxed in August, fighting Andy Ruiz to a draw on the undercard of Israil Madrimov vs Terence Crawford in Los Angeles. The 36-year-old Miller is now 26-1-2 (22 KOs).
