IBF orders Bakhram Murtazaliev vs Tim Tszyu

Tim Tszyu was previously slated to return on September 22nd in a final eliminator

About three weeks ago, Tim Tszyu announced that his return to action would be a September 22nd IBF final eliminator and named Erickson Lubin as the probably opponent. That wound up falling though due to a hand injury on Lubin’s part, with “Hammer” adding that they’d agreed to fight in December instead.

Those plans may need to be adjusted, as Dan Rafael reports that the IBF has elected to skip the eliminator and just order Tszyu (24-1, 17 KO) to meet super welterweight champion Bakhram Murtazaliev (22-0, 16 KO). The two have until September 5th to come to terms.

The timing seems tight to fight Murtazaliev in September, but there’s theoretically nothing stopping Tszyu from putting together an end-of-year title shot and keeping the date with a stay-busy fight. He’s no stranger to putting his mandatory status on the line, notably defeating Tony Harrison and Carlos Ocampo while waiting for Jermell Charlo to fulfill his obligation.

We’ll see how this one plays out.

First free Amazon Prime bill, with Tim Tszyu's return, in negotiations

The first free Amazon Prime Video boxing card is in advanced negotiations for an Oct. 19 debut, three boxing officials with knowledge of the card confirmed to BS on Wednesday.

The planned headline bout is former junior middleweight champion Tim Tszyu returning directly to a title fight in new IBF belt holder Bakhram Murtazaliev’s first title defense.

Australia’s wildly popular Tszyu (24-1, 17 KOs) is coming back from a horrific head cut suffered in his lost WBO-WBC title fight March 30 in Las Vegas, when Sebastian Fundora’s elbow opened up a prolific wound that bled profusely throughout a fight Fundora won by split decision.

If Tszyu had it his way, he would’ve returned to the ring Aug. 3 against Vergil Ortiz Jr., but the cut hadn’t healed in time.

Now that he’s recovered, Tszyu seeks to reunite with a 154-pound belt against Russia’s Murtazaliev (22-0, 16 KOs), an Oxnard, California-trained fighter who captured the vacant belt April 6 by venturing to Germany to meet native Jack Culcay, knocking out Culcay in the 11th round.

The Murtazaliev-Tszyu card is being pointed to Orlando’s Caribe Royale Resort, but the site deal is not finalized yet, sources said.

World Boxing News first reported Tszyu-Murtazaliev was headed to Oct. 19.

Tszyu is planning to be highly active, aiming to fight as often as four times a year – quite an undertaking in a division that ranks as perhaps the deepest in boxing.

Since Fundora also fights under the Premier Boxing Champions banner, he is Tszyu’s ideal opponent for 2025, but Fundora is currently in an uncertain window.

He’s obliged to fight new four-division champion Terence Crawford if the WBA 154-pound titleholder from Nebraska invokes his mandatory position on Fundora.

If Crawford instead opts for a lucrative date arranged by Saudi Arabia’s Turki Alalshikh against unbeaten WBC interim titleholder Ortiz, then Fundora is likely to fight former three-belt welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. as early as October.

The free Prime Video debut, accessible by SVOD (Subscription Video On Demand), follows at least four Prime Video pay-per-views.

Tszyu-Fundora was the first, followed by Saul "Canelo" Alvarez-Jaime Munguia in May, Gervonta “Tank” Davis-Frank Martin in June, Alvarez-Edgar Berlanga on Sept. 14 and perhaps Fundora-Spence, with another Davis pay-per-view expected in November.

The free Prime Video debut was supposed to also be at the Orlando resort, with former super middleweight titlist Caleb Plant set to meet Trevor McCumby this weekend, but McCumby was injured and the bout was shifted to the Alvarez-Berlanga card.

Boxing Scene: How much tape have you watched on Murtazaliev?

Tim Tszyu: I don’t really watch much tape. I just want to get a bit of understanding of how he fights. I know his physical dimensions and what he brings, and that’s enough. I’ll figure it out on the night.

BS: What does it mean to come off a loss and regain a belt? That’s a rare feat, and it speaks to the respect the industry has toward you.

Tszyu: It’s massive, an opportunity I’m taking with both hands. Two-time world champion sounds pretty good to me.

BS: In the Fundora fight, you could’ve walked away and kept your belt. Yet you showed your heart and likely endeared yourself to so many more fans by sticking it out through all the blood. Why’d you do it?

Tszyu: I’ve always been that kind of old-school, throwback fighter and I wanted to show it. It’s blood and guts at times, and whatever circumstance you’re going through, you never quit. That’s how it’s always been since being a young kid.”

BS: You immediately raised your hand for an Aug. 3 fight with unbeaten junior middleweight Vergil Ortiz Jr. before doctors told you the cut wasn’t healed. How difficult was that to hear?

Tszyu: It was disappointing. It was a fight I was ready for straight away and then didn’t get cleared. Things happen. It’s all part of the plan. Patience is something that every individual needs to learn to master.

BS: What were your thoughts on Ortiz’s Aug. 10 victory over replacement foe Serhii Bohachuk, getting off the canvas twice to win on the scorecards?

Tszyu: He did very well. It was a close fight. Both boys landed big shots. Kudos to both of them.

BS: Did you watch Terence Crawford become a four-division champion by defeating WBA junior middleweight titleholder Israil Madrimov on Aug. 10?

Tszyu: Yeah, Crawford did very well. He had an awkward, tough fighter in front of him and he figured the puzzle out.

BS: Is Crawford the best fighter in the division?

Tszyu: Skills-wise, yeah. Not as someone who’s accomplished in the division. He’s only fought once.

BS: In my opinion, as a boxing writer, Crawford’s power didn’t transfer to 154 pounds. What did you, as a boxer, think?

Tszyu: I don’t know. It went 12 rounds. He did do some damage to Madrimov. It’s [because of] Madrimov’s style. He’s always moving. It’s tough to catch him.

BS: Is 154 pounds boxing’s best division?

Tszyu: It’s red-hot right now.

BS: We hear you have a plan to fight four times a year? No one at your level does that. Why would you?

Tszyu: I’ll do what I can to make as many fights as I can. As soon as we finish a fight, we’re back on to the next one. Keep the train rolling. [It’s about] goals, aspirations, money, legacy and just being the best version of yourself. My vision is quite a bit [to meet]. I’m looking ahead to the next guys: Murtazaliev, then [Erickson] Lubin.

BS: How has this camp gone?

Tszyu: I’m working on different things, my style’s evolving. I can’t wait to see me in six weeks.

BS: Did you hear the comments from Turki Alalshikh that Crawford may only want to fight against Canelo Alvarez? It seems there would be a lot of cash in play for a unification fight against you, as well. Do you want to fight Crawford?

Tszyu: Yeah, for sure, if that opportunity presents itself, I would love for that fight to happen. I’ve got a road map planned and I’ve got a few names I’ve got to tick off before that.

BS: We’ve seen statements and reports indicating hard feelings between Alalshikh, the Saudis and you and your management and promoter. Can you clarify what has happened?

Tszyu: Look, I’ve got a team behind me, No Limit and Premier Boxing Champions, working tirelessly, nonstop, presenting me opportunities. All business goes through them. I’m not going into a meeting as a fighter with a promoter. It’s not the way I do things. It goes through the team. From what I heard, there hasn’t been proper introductions. I’m happy with PBC and No Limit, and we have a great road ahead of us and that’s got my full attention.

BS: Loyalty is rare attribute in this sport, but it sounds especially important to you?

Tszyu: Yeah, that’s what I’m based on. You’re not going to stop working with these people who’ve presented all these opportunities to you and then stuff those guys to say, ‘Oh, there’s a couple million over there.’ I’m not like that and I’ve never been about that. It’s all about the long game. PBC and No Limit have been great to me, and I’m not going to go stab them in the back.

BS: And it’s notable that after PBC placed you in its first Amazon Prime Video pay-per-view card. The Murtazaliev fight is PBC’s first free Amazon Prime Video free card.

Tszyu: Back to the throne.

BS: Was there undue pressure on you to fulfill that first pay-per-view, to fight on, even with that cut?

Tszyu: It’s just how I am. It was an opportunity, such a big opportunity. History’s history. I wasn’t going to let it get away. If we run it back, I’m sure it’ll be different. All good man, we’re in a good position.”

Yoenis Tellez and Mateo Tapia will feature in a pair of fights.

Premier Boxing Champions have announced a pair of undercard fights for their Oct. 19 show on Prime Video, a card headlined by the 154 lb title fight between Bakhram Murtazaliev and Tim Tszyu.

Cuban super welterweight Yoenis Tellez (8-0, 6 KO) comes over from Jake Paul’s MVP outfit to make his return to the PBC rings, facing Johan Gonzalez (35-3, 34 KO).

Tellez, 24, looked excellent in a third round TKO win over Sergio Garcia the last time he fought on a PBC show in July 2023, and has won two straight on MVP cards. Venezuela’s Gonzalez, 33, has losses to Magomed Kurbanov and Jesus Ramos in the last couple of years, but did beat Guido Schramm a little under a year ago in a semi-notable ProBox TV bout.

Tellez will be on home ground, in a way, as he’s had four of his last five fights at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, where this show will be held.

Middleweight Mateo Tapia (17-0, 10 KO) will also be in action, as the 26-year-old Australian — born in Mexico — will take on another Venzuelan in Endry Saavedra (16-1, 13 KO), a fight that would really be better off actually taking place in Australia, where Saavedra has a bit of notoriety thanks to a win over Isaac Hardman this past March.

Tapia, 26, is seven years younger than his foe and coming off of a win over Keiber Gonzalez on Apr. 24.

Tellez is a legit prospect and Tapia is in a division where strides can be made quickly right now, and on paper it’s not a terrible undercard, but you can also see they don’t exactly have a lot of money to be spending on this show. Luckily, the main event is really good on paper, and that’s what most people care about.

“It was a good bonding experience,” said the son of former undisputed super lightweight champion, Tim Tszyu about training with his father. “Straight after my last fight I asked him to get some work in, and I didn’t think he’d actually say yes, but he did. We reconnected and it was a good experience that was years in the making. It was good to connect as father and son, and as a fighter.”

“I’m unbreakable and I’m hungry. He [Kostya Tszyu] was trying to break me. I was like, ‘alright, if you want to go down that path, let’s do it.’ It was good fun. He told me stories of what he used to do in his training and I wanted to try my best as well.”

It’s a very tough comeback fight, but it’s a huge fight for champion too. His quality of opposition looks inferior to Tszyu’s. It could be a barnstormer as both can really crack

Press Release

Before former 154-pound title holder Tim Tszyu arrived stateside in Las Vegas for training camp to prepare to challenge IBF champion Bakhram Murtazaliev, the Australian held his customary pre-camp in Thailand where he was joined for the first time in years by his father, International Boxing Hall of Famer Kostya Tszyu. “It was a good bonding experience,” Tim said. “Straight after my last fight I asked him to get some work in, and I didn’t think he’d actually say yes, but he did. We reconnected and it was a good experience that was years in the making. It was good to connect as father and son, and as a fighter.”

The 29 year-old Tszyu has carved out his own lane separate from his 55-year-old father’s by displaying an all-action style and taking on the toughest competition again and again as he nears an opportunity to become a two-time world champion against Murtazaliev on Saturday, October 19th in the main event of PBC Championship Boxing on Prime Video from the Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando, Florida.

On fight night, Kostya will be ringside in Orlando to watch his son compete in-person for the first time since Tim’s pro debut, taking on the spectator role, with Tim’s uncle and career-long coach Igor Golubev leading the corner. When describing the recent training with his father, Tim explained what his father learned about his son from those sessions.

“I’m unbreakable and I’m hungry,” said Tim Tszyu. “He was trying to break me. I was like, ‘alright, if you want to go down that path, let’s do it.’ It was good fun. He told me stories of what he used to do in his training and I wanted to try my best as well.”

The main event bout headlines a three-fight card beginning at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT exclusively on Prime Video for all Prime members in the United States and select countries. Join today or start a free 30-day trial to catch the championship card.

Tickets for the live event are on sale now and are available through Ticketmaster. The event is promoted by TGB Promotions. The main event is promoted in association with No Limit Boxing and Main Events.

Tim Tszyu on the ‘comeback’ trail against Bakhram Murtazaliev

Tim Tszyu has declared Saturday’s fight with Bakhram Murtazaliev as the start of his “comeback”.

On Saturday at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida, Tszyu will challenge the IBF junior-middleweight champion on the occasion of the Russian’s first defense of his title.

The 31-year-old Murtazaliev won the vacant title in April when he stopped Jack Culcay, shortly after Tszyu was unfortunate in recording his first defeat.

Tszyu was the defending WBO champion when he agreed, at late notice, to fight Sebastian Fundora in a unification contest for the WBO and WBC titles after an injury had ruled Keith Thurman – a significantly different nature of opponent – out.

An elbow then opened a cut in Tszyu’s scalp during the second round, ensuring he would fight until the conclusion at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas as a bloody mess, before being declared the loser via split decision.

If to a degree his reputation and marketability were enhanced in a defeat that represented the launch of Premier Boxing Champions’ broadcast agreement with Amazon Prime – Tszyu was then offered the most appealing of contests against Vergil Ortiz Jnr but couldn’t accept it because his cut had yet to heal – he regardless spoke like a fighter with a point to prove.

PBC’s offering him an immediate title fight is a further reflection of the extent to which the dramatic defeat by Fundora isn’t being held against him, but at Thursday’s final press conference the 29 year old said: “I’s not just an ordinary fight, this is a vengeance fight. It’s not just a world title – it’s a comeback. I believe I am the man at 154lbs. I just need the time to prove it. One by one, I’m going to get rid of each and every one of them.

“Bakhram, there’s nothing personal there. But I’m not no sideline fighter.

“I’m a young kid living his dream. The first guy to headline an Amazon Prime card, pay-per-view, and now the first free-to-air. It’s a big honor – as a young kid, this is what you wish for, and this is what I’m dreaming of and believing in, and working and living my dream. A lot of hard work goes into this.

“I’ve always wanted the biggest challenges out there. It was a no-brainer, this fight. I had no hesitation at all. I was actually hunting him down for quite some time. The [Jermell] Charlo fight – between him and Charlo – that’s when he first came on my radar, and then I started looking at him. I remember calling the boys as soon as the me and Charlo fight got not made. ‘Let’s get Bakhram.’ They didn’t want it. I’ve been chasing it – the big fights; big names; the toughest, scariest monsters out there. Unfortunately, they don’t frighten me.”

Shortly before the start of Thursday’s press conference, Tszyu’s father Kostya, the celebrated junior welterweight recognized as the finest Australian fighter of all time, arrived to attend his first fight since Tszyu made his professional debut in 2016.

In an additional change to his son’s setup, Joe Quiambo will deputize as cutman because Mark Gambin, who was criticized for his contributions to Tszyu-Fundora, was unavailable as a consequence of requiring an emergency appendectomy.

Murtazaliev remained largely reluctant to speak, and will have reminded some observers of the demeanor of his compatriot Artur Beterbiev in the days before his recent undisputed light-heavyweight title fight with Dmitry Bivol.

It was when Murtazaliev was asked about suggestions that he had previously been reluctant to fight Tszyu that he responded: “I’ve never hid from anybody. I wasn’t running from him. If he really wanted to fight me, he could have made an offer.”

Before then, with all of the stoicism for which Eastern European fighters are increasingly recognized, he had said: “I’m not going to talk much. I just want to thank everybody who helped to organize the fight and everybody who participated here. I’m not going to talk much. Let’s wait until Saturday.

“I’m very, very happy to be champion. I’m happy to be looking forward to this fight on Saturday night. God bless, everything is going to be okay.”

The first hint of any tension between them came when Tszyu responded to what Murtazaliev had previously said.

“Step-aside money and easy-risk opponents to keep that mandatory [challenger] spot is much easier than risking the big, bad monster,” Tszyu insisted. The monster was relishing playing with his prey, and preparing to bear his teeth.

Bakhram Murtazaliev: “I’m not interested in going back and forth with Tim, I’m just ready for Saturday and ready to give everyone a great fight. It was a dream come true to become a champion and now I’m just looking forward to this fight Saturday night. I’m not looking past Tim, but my goal is to unify the titles after this bout. I’ve never ran from any fighter. Everyone knows where to find me. We don’t have to wait much longer now. To me I don’t care if anyone is overlooking me. All the talking will end Saturday night. That’s all we’re concentrating on.”

Tim Tszyu: “This is not just an ordinary fight, this is a vengeance fight. This is my comeback…I believe that I am the man at 154-pounds. I just need the time to prove it. I’m taking these guys out one by one. I want all the monsters. They don’t frighten me.

“I’ve always wanted the biggest and toughest challenges out there. Taking this fight was a no-brainer. I’ve been hunting him down for quite some time. I guess he wanted to keep taking step-aside money instead of facing me so he could hold onto his mandatory position.

“When we step into the ring, it’s going to be different than what he thinks. Everything gets answered on Saturday night. The bogeyman is back. I never left. I went to hell and back in my last fight, but now it’s my vengeance. That’s the statement I’m making…the last name Tszyu will live on as the greatest boxing family that ever lived.”
