Earnie Shavers

Post by Riddick Bowie »

What new source surfaced that said Shavers KOd Larry Sims in 2 please?

For nearly 40 years this has been in the record books as a 1st round KO and it's described as that in his 2002 book. Just curious as to where the new information came from.

Just a guess here, perhaps Sims didn't come out for the 2nd round. Sometimes that's scored a TKO 1 or TKO 2.

That is indeed what sometimes happens, but not here. It really was a TKO during the 2nd round.

I've seen Ali-Liston 1 recorded as a TKO 6 or 7 as well as Cooney-Jimmy Young as a TKO 4 or 5. Sims? Not to be confused with Jeff Simms who was stopped by Shavers the night of Ali's last fight.

"400 fans watched Shavers knock out Larry Sims of Cleveland at 1.30 of the second round with an upper cut set up with an overhand right to the body"
