Cheers, Andy. I always liked Elliott, a very understated boxer who reached four ABA finals in the 1980s, losing the first two (including a last-gasp knockout against Darren Dyer) but then grabbing a brace at Wembley. He was good enough to make the Seoul Olympics of 1988 and won his first bout before suffering a freak stoppage at the hands of Frenchman Ludovic Proto, who landed a nothing sort of punch in the opening seconds and Mark's eye came up like a balloon, which was a terrible shame. Mark's father, Johnny, had boxed in the 1964 Games representing Jamaica.
Mark turned pro with Mickey Duff and secured a British title eliminator against Mark Ramsey, who later developed into a journeyman but had plenty of ambition at the time and walked through Elliott's best punches to force a thrilling stoppage in the 10th and last round. That was make or break for Elliott and he dropped off the scene after a couple more fights.
