Sandy Ryan vs Mikaela Mayer set for September 27th in New York

Sandy Ryan holds the WBO welterweight title

Chris Mannix reports that after dropping two questionable decisions on English soil, Mikaela Mayer’s next title bid will see her challenge WBO welterweight champion Sandy Ryan on September 17th at the Theater at Madison Square Garden.

Amusingly, this once again pits Mayer (19-2, 5 KO) against rival Alycia Baumgardner, who faces Delfine Persoon in Atlanta that same evening.

Ryan (7-1-1, 3 KO) suffered a tough loss to veteran Erica Anabella Farias in her fourth pro fight, but has since come into her own, avenging that defeat soon after and beating undefeated Marie Pierre Houle for the belt eight months later. A subsequent bid for undisputed glory saw her settle for a bogus draw with Jessica McCaskill, after which she returned to the win column by thrashing Terri Harper last March.

This is just a rock-solid fight. Mayer was deeply unfortunate to not get the win against Baumgardner and Natasha Jonas; she remains one of the best and most consistently entertaining female boxers in the game. She and Ryan should put on a quality scrap.

Xander Zayas and Bruce Carrington join Ryan vs Mayer on September 27th

Xander Zayas faces Damian Sosa and Bruce Carrington meets Sulaiman Segawa

Four days after news first broke, Top Rank and Matchroom have officially announced that Sandy Ryan will defend her WBO welterweight title against Mikaela Mayer on September 27th at the Theater at Madison Square Garden.

“After months of negotiations in every direction, I am thrilled that my team has pulled through for me and gotten me this fight,” Mayer said. “As several dates fell through in the UK, the last thing I expected was for my manager to call with an offer that ticked every box.

“My team not only secured me another title fight against the opponent I asked for, but I’m coming back to the US with my Top Rank and ESPN family. I loved fighting in the UK over the past two years, but I have genuinely missed fighting in America. I’m ready to take Sandy Ryan’s WBO belt.”

Ryan said: “I’m excited to be returning to America and particularly fighting at MSG. It’s the Mecca of boxing and a venue that every champion dreams of competing in. I feel privileged to have been given this opportunity, and I want to thank Matchroom and Top Rank for coming together to make the fight.

“It’s the perfect moment in my career, and I’m looking forward to successfully defending my world title. I can promise that on a level playing field, nobody is taking this belt from me.

“Mayer has had an awful lot to say about me and this fight, and I’m sure she will continue to do so, but I’m an athlete and a professional. I will let my boxing do my talking, and I will shine in that ring on September 27. Bring it on.”

Super welterweight prospect Xander Zayas (19-0, 12 KO), fresh off a main event victory over Patrick Teixeira in June, returns to action against Mexico’s Damian Sosa (25-2, 16 KO) on the undercard. “Samurai” enjoyed a fairly nondescript career in his native Mexico before upsetting undefeated Marques Valle this past April on ProBox TV, and as I’ve said before, I’m always happy to see script-flippers get the opportunities they earned.

It’s a similar story for the other revealed bout, which pits top featherweight prospect Bruce Carrington (12-0, 8 KO) against Sulaiman Segawa (17-4-1, 6 KO). Carrington has shown his bona fides with two straight brutal finishes this year, but Segawa has the biggest win between them after hustling his way past Ruben Villa last month.

No complaints here; it’s a solid tripleheader with two proven action fighters in the main event and two prospects in reasonably tough matchups. Not bad for a Friday night.

Vito Mielnicki Jr.-Daniel Buciuc confirmed for undercard of Sandy Ryan-Mikaela Mayer

The junior middleweight Vito Mielnicki Jr is to fight Daniel Buciuc of Romania over 10 rounds at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York on September 27.

They will meet on the undercard of the WBO welterweight title fight, overseen by Top Rank, between the champion Sandy Ryan and her challenger Mikaela Mayer. Another junior-middleweight fight, Puerto Rico’s Xander Zayas versus the Mexican Damian Sosa, had already been confirmed for the undercard – as had the featherweight fight between Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington and Sulaiman Segawa.

There will also be an eight-round junior-welterweight fight between Tiger Johnson and Yomar Alamo, another Puerto Rican, and further junior-welterweight contests, over 10 rounds, between Rohan Polanco of the Dominican Republic and Argentina’s Marcelino Lopez, and another Dominican in Elvis Rodriguez, against the Mexican-American Kendo Castaneda.

Floyd “Cashflow” Diaz fights his fellow bantamweight Mario Hernandez over eight rounds, and at heavyweight Ali Feliz will fight Rashad Coulter over six.

Was a pretty good fight this, never scored but looked like it could've gone either way, I'd say most people seem to have Ryan winning but Mayer gets it, she was the faster starter, Ryan came into things and both had their moments, some good action

She got some paint thrown on her. I remember Naz had a beer thrown on him during an entrance and never said anything about it. You'd think she was raped the way shes going on. It was a bit of paint thrown on her. Nothing. She is too much of a plodder needing to have her feet set to punch. Can easily be tied up and doesn't throw anything there so it's easy for Mayer to get a break. Can't cut off the ring. A little bit of paint being thrown on her is nothing.

The rematch is pointless. Once Mayer showed she was tough enough to take Sandys shots it was all over. Mayer just beat her to the punch all night, had her two steps behind all night. Sandy needs to cut off the ring, throw with Mayer (she can't because she needs to be set to punch so Mayer can pick her spots and get there first off the backfoot), throw when they are in close (just waiting for a break while mayer gets a rest and throws her own punches is terrible) and much more. This isn't a Terri Harper she is facing. Mayer is simply too good at boxing for Sandy. Plus she knows Sandy is mentally weak. There are thousands of ways to unsettle someone and throwing paint is just one of them.

Mandatory rematch unlikely for Mikaela Mayer and Sandy Ryan

There is little chance that the WBO will order a mandatory rematch between welterweight titleholder Mikaela Mayer and the woman she dethroned, Sandy Ryan.

That doesn’t mean the Mayer-Ryan rematch won’t happen.

Kevin Rooney of Matchroom Boxing asked for Ryan to be granted a rematch during a Thursday meeting of the WBO ratings committee at the sanctioning body’s convention in Puerto Rico.

“I know there’s special circumstances around controversial decisions,” Rooney said. “Depending on who you ask, the decision was controversial, it was questionable, it was close, it could’ve went either way. I’m taking nothing away from Mikaela. A tremendous fight by both girls.”

Mayer took a majority decision, one judge seeing it 95-95 while the other two ruled it 97-93 and 96-94 in her favor. But what Matchroom’s request truly was based on was the bizarre incident that happened to Ryan on the way to the event in New York City, when someone threw paint on her. There have been no arrests yet in that case.

“The circumstances leading up to the fight that night is what was controversial,” Rooney said. “The fact that Sandy went ahead with the fight rather than pulling out, she wanted to please the fans, please the committee. It was the main event – [she wanted to] please [show promoter] Top Rank. The fact that she went ahead with it, with everything that happened, was remarkable. With everything that happened, it would be only right to have that fight immediately ordered again.”

Mayer is a Top Rank fighter. Carl Moretti, the vice president of boxing operations for Top Rank, argued that the promotion’s fighter hadn’t received immediate sequels following her own losses.

“Previously, Mikaela was on the wrong end of close, competitive fights with Natasha Jonas and Alycia Baumgardner,” Moretti said. “And we requested that rematches be made, and I got [denied].”

Moretti explained that Mayer wants to keep her options open.

“We’ve had brief discussions so far with Matchroom about doing a rematch [with Ryan],” he said. “Mikaela would just like the opportunity to explore the winner of Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano first. And Natasha [Jonas]. Obviously, those are attractive fights as well. I think, as of now, I don’t know if it should be ordered. Let’s see how those fights go, and go from there.”

Gustavo Olivieri, who was the WBO’s in-house counsel for years before being elected its new president last week, said he didn’t see any legal grounds for ordering an immediate rematch.

While it’s the WBO’s championship committee that will make the final call, Olivieri will recommend against it.

“The circumstances that happened were outside the ring, not inside the ring,” Olivieri said. “There was not a misapplication of the governing rules. The scores were not controversial. There was no certified evidence of any wrongdoing as pertaining to the fight itself.”

But Oliveri then emphasized what Moretti had noted: The door is not shut on a rematch between Mayer and Ryan. It’s just that Mayer wants to keep her door open to other opponents.

“I believe [Mayer-Ryan II is] the fight that makes sense for both parties,” Olivieri said. “I’ll let you guys talk. Maybe you guys can reach some sort of an agreement. But I don’t see it. Maybe the [championship] committee has a different opinion. Their opinion has the final say.”

Said Moretti: “There’s a natural path that fight might happen anyway.”

Rooney also asked for a No. 1 spot in the WBO’s welterweight ratings. Ryan is currently No. 2 behind Jessica McCaskill, even though McCaskill announced her retirement in July.
