Boxing Media - What’s missing
Boxing Media - What’s missing
The DAZN announcement this week clearly shows they are in it for the long haul.
In terms of content what would UK fans like to see more of from our boxing media? I’m massively turned off by the IFL “XXXX GOES OFF” click bait stuff for example as most of these interviews are just scripted powder puff pieces.
In terms of the written word, anything that’s missing that could enhance a website like DAZN etc?

DAZN needs to get more sports involved to be taken seriously as a rival to the other sports networks.TheGoods wrote: ↑05 Nov 2024, 03:00 The DAZN announcement this week clearly shows they are in it for the long haul.

I’m not sure anything with the written word will help other than more articles pushing the DAZN fights in newspapers/on news websites. The difficultly they’ll have is there is still a big generational thing about people being unsure on how to use apps on their TVs. I don’t see how they get around that.

Innovation. There has not been a new style or format or anything like that in a while other than shirts like YouTube and tiktok. There's not enough creativity there in terms of what the people want to see. The interviews often appear generic and soulless.
Intelligence. Not enough of it. The old guys are stuck in the past, the new guys don't appear to know anything.
Engaging content. It's all pretty flat and uninteresting. It doesn't tell anyone anything new and doesn't show that the writer/presenter/pundit knows anything more than the rest of us.
Variety for all demographics, not just casuals. The YouTube and clickbait era of journalism is not engaging for most. We don't all want sound bites which get trending on tiktok.
Stop selling soap operas if there is no soap opera to be sold. Get us engaged in fights and the scene without creating fake drama or shoehorning certain narratives that aren't there.

That's for them to work out. The fake beef or fake rivalry spin they put on every single fight has been old for a long time. It's usually not believable and usually nobody cares. What they currently produce doesn't get me engaged in fights. It tends to be my discussions on here or my knowledge of the guys already through my own research or history of watching that get me engaged. Fake drama just annoys me more than anything and is more likely to make me dislike a guy if they appear disingenuous. Maybe I'm the only one but if they can produce content that doesn't revolve around the two guys, who are getting paid to hit each other, hating each other, then I'd likely pay more attention to it.

I completely agree with you, don't get me wrong. It's tired and cliched. Every match is a "bitter rivalry" etc etcjoshj909 wrote: ↑05 Nov 2024, 11:47That's for them to work out. But... I think that's all there is to it. The sheer amount of boxing out there and the sheer number of relatively pointless fights, these guys are often basically trying to hype up a League 2 midweek November away game between two midtable teams.
The real answer is probably that there's too many bloggers and youtubers.

Re: Boxing Media - What’s missing
Make sure you put your fighters up for interview at Boxing News, it's the only source I trust about boxing.
The general boxing website crowd are just trying to out-shout each other, which is tedious.

Quite obviously, Boxing News needs a cryptic crossword.
"Sounds like Richard's sporting headwear (6)". And so on. Well, it would amuse me at least.

I still miss my Boxing Monthly......yup, old geezer who buys magazines
But it was good - often superb - with things called in-depth features and by proper, specialist writers-editors with the best contacts and an opinion or two.
Glyn Leach and Graham Houston - quality editors - eye for a story and a global perspective/worldwide contacts.
Wanted to know all about David Tua, what Freddie Roach really thought or what Universum were up too? Look no further.
Burning desire for a Hekkie Budler feature, check
Trouble was that it was print for too long and that was way too costly and also slow when it came to news.....it is a shame they did not whip it over to a full internet mag sooner. People would have paid for that quality.

Lower output, more quality.
Re: Boxing Media - What’s missing
Decent, lengthy interviews, like the BN ones recently with Warren (superb) and Fury shown but on DAZN channel (or Sky).
Youtube manages to do this better than broadcast media but it's a good device to retain the interest of more hard core boxing fans and also develop the knowledge and engagement of more casual viewers.

Re: Boxing Media - What’s missing
I'd respectfully disagree on one point. Surely we do not need more interviews from Fury - there are so many already on so many websites that that alone has probably contributed to a chunk of global warming (given the amount of electricity to work the data centres that have to serve/host that many terabytes of waffle). Hot air causing more hot air. We do need more interviews if they are insightful - it may be my recollection, but there was a period a few years ago where BN seemed to have a "comeback" interview with Ashley Sexton about every fourth issue, and those didn't really work for me. Or maybe my memory is merging those with similar pieces on Mitchell Smith. Allegedly is a more interesting interview, though, I agree.revporl wrote: ↑06 Nov 2024, 11:46 Decent, lengthy interviews, like the BN ones recently with Warren (superb) and Fury shown but on DAZN channel (or Sky).
