Keyshawn Davis vs Gustavo Lemos in the works for November 8th ESPN main event

Gustavo Lemos lost a bogus decision to Richardson Hitchins in April

Keyshawn Davis may be just a few short months from the stiffest test of his pro career, as Mike Coppinger reports that the Tokyo silver medalist is “finalizing a deal” to meet Argentina’s Gustavo Lemos atop a November 8th ESPN show in Davis’ hometown of Norfolk, Virginia.

Davis (11-0, 7 KO) currently sits at 2-0 in 2024, thrashing veteran Jose Pedraza in February before outclassing the grapple-happy Miguel Madueno last month. Lemos (29-1, 19 KO) presents significantly greater danger. “El Electrico” torched Lee Selby in a 2022 IBF lightweight eliminator, only to lose his mandatory spot after grievously missing weight for a tune-up bout. Moving up to 140, he picked up a quick knockout in his home country before giving Richardson Hitchins the business and winding up on the wrong end of arguably the most frustrating robbery of 2024.

Lemos can’t hold a candle to Davis’ technique, but few can in this sport; what Lemos offers is nonstop aggression, thudding power, and genuine malice. If Davis pulls off an impressive win here, he’s ready for the big leagues.

Jaron Ennis vs Brian Norman Jr talks collapse, Norman to face Derrieck Cuevas November 8th

Jaron Ennis must now rematch IBF mandatory Karen Chukhadzian

In what should come as no surprise after Eddie Hearn’s earlier comments, Top Rank’s Carl Morretti tells Dan Rafael that talks of a unification between IBF welterweight champ Jaron “Boots” Ennis and WBO titlist Brian Norman Jr are “dead over money.” Instead, Norman will meet no. 7 contender Derrieck Cuevas on ESPN’s November 8th Keyshawn Davis vs Gustavo Lemos show.

Cuevas (27-1-1, 19 KO) has competed all over the North and Latin American scenes throughout his decade-long career, though he’s yet to notch a noteworthy win in the process. He did contrive to lose a six-rounder to Damian Ezequiel Bonelli in 2020 on the heels of a year-long layoff, making him currently the sole victory of Bonelli’s last 14 bouts.

Norman (26-0, 20 KO) has admittedly come out flat in the past, but after watching him work over the very dangerous Giovani Santillan in May, it’s hard to sell Cuevas as a credible threat.

Keyshawn Davis visits Norfolk school ahead of homecoming main event

Lightweight contender Keyshawn Davis, born and raised in Norfolk, Virginia, returned to his hometown to kick off fight week ahead of his 135lbs meeting with Gustavo Lemos. On Monday afternoon, he visited Jacox Elementary School, where a parade of kindergartners through fourth graders chanted his name.

Davis spoke to more than 50 fifth-grade students in the school auditorium, sharing stories about his upbringing and journey from Norfolk to professional success. He brought a student down from the bleachers for a brief boxing demonstration and signed posters for students and faculty, many of whom taught him nearly two decades ago.

Davis, 11-0 (7 KOs), a silver medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, will make his main event and homecoming debut Friday evening in a 10-round fight against the 29-1 (19 KOs) Lemos.

The event will also feature a middleweight co-main between the 13-0 (5 KOs) Troy Isley and Tyler Howard, 20-1 (11 KOs). Keyshawn’s older brother, junior welterweight contender Kelvin Davis, who is 13-0 (7 KOs), will return in an eight-round bout against the 15-3 (10 KOs) Yeis Solano, while Keyshawn’s younger brother, Keon Davis, will make his professional debut in a four-round junior middleweight fight against the 1-1 (1 KO) Jalen Moore.

Echoes of Pernell Whitaker as Keyshawn Davis brings big-time boxing back to Virginia

Big-time boxing has vanished from Virginia. Long gone are the days when the late Pernell Whitaker was featured as a hometown hero in the Old Dominion State.

“Sweet Pea” fought 11 of his 45 career bouts at the Scope Arena in Norfolk, but none since 1994 when Whitaker defended his welterweight title in a rematch against Buddy McGirt. Whitaker retired in 2001 and passed away in 2019, and the region has mostly been devoid of the sweet science over the last 30 years.

That all comes to an end Friday night when Norfolk’s lightweight contender Keyshawn Davis, 11-0 (7 KOs), takes on Gustavo Lemos, 29-1 (19 KOs), at the Scope Arena on ESPN+, marking the first time in Top Rank Boxing history that the promotional company has staged an event in Virginia.

The card will be a family affair, as Keyshawn’s brothers Kelvin Davis, 13-0 (7 KOs), and the pro debut of Keon Davis will also be featured on the show.

The community has responded well, with over 10,000 tickets being sold for the three-year pro Davis’ first headlining event.

The developments have been music to the ears of the 25-year-old nicknamed “The Businessman.”

“This is a very special moment and definitely something we’ve been dreaming about since we were amateurs,” Davis told Boxing Scene. “I always had big dreams and big visions. We worked our asses off to get here. This is something that God has written for us and we are just living it out. I think the fans see that I can be one of the best in the sport and I am not just having a hometown fight.

“After I have a spectacular performance with Lemos, we are going to take it state to state and my hometown will be following me and we're going to be at the breaking point of becoming a superstar. After I become a world champion, my name will be solidified in the sport.”

“I'm becoming a world champion in the next year. Guaranteed. Period.”

The 2020 United States Olympic silver medalist has had a solid 2024 so far by dominating former titleholder Jose Pedraza via knockout in February and outmuscling Miguel Madueno in July for a unanimous decision.

“My performance against Madueno was a solid A performance,” said Davis. “My defense was on point and I didn't get touched with any of his bombs. It was a very physical and rough fight and he didn't get tired for 10 rounds. A lot of the up-and-coming contenders at 135 can't handle a fight like that. That's why I got a lot of respect from that fight.”

The fight against the game and gritty Lemos will be another Litmus test for Davis.

Lemos, a 28-year-old eight-year pro from Argentina, made his US debut in April and gave Richardson Hitchins a rough fight. Many observers believe Lemos beat Hitchins in a fight that was officially ruled a unanimous decision win for Hitchins. The fight was separated by 11 punches (172 to 161) in Hitchins’ favor.

Lemos’ performance was good enough to land a co-promotional deal from Top Rank in May. Lemos, who retired former titleholder Lee Selby by knocking out the Brit in 2022, is still linked with co-promoter O.R. Promotions.

“Lemos is going to have a lot on his plate on November 8 dealing with a complicated fighter like me,” said Davis. “I feel like I am the best in the division and I’m going to show it with each fight. In just 11 fights, I’ve kept opening the eyes of fans with my performances. I've been doing a lot of talking but I've been backing it up.”

Check out some excerpts from Davis below.

Davis on his plans for 2025 and his discussions with Top Rank
“Well the only thing that’s mandatory right now is me getting my world title. After I become a world champion it’s always more to accomplish but I would say my name is solidified in the sport now — not only did I become an Olympic silver medalist but now I’m a world champion. And those two things you can’t take away you got to respect. So that’s definitely the conversation we having now, is getting me that world title.

“I’m imagining that Lomachenko, he probably fight one more time and then retire. Hopefully he pick me to fight. Whoever he pick, I’m pretty sure he going to retire afterwards. So if he pick me, great, I’ll fight him and get the IBF. But if he don’t, I’m imagining he’ll win his fight and retire, then I’m going to go for the [vacant] IBF.

“Right now me and Denys Berinchyk, we friends, bro. We hit each other up in the DMs all the time, talking, he wish me luck, I wish him luck, he give me updates and stuff like that. So either or. I feel like both of those two lanes is open for me.”

On his thoughts regarding Tank choosing to fight Lamont Roach next
“I think that’s a great fight for the DMV. Them guys know each other very well, we all know each other very well. We all from the DMV, we all came up with each other through the amateurs, through the pros...you know, best man win.”

On the 135 pound landscape
“Not in no specific order but Tank, Shakur and me, I think we’re the best at 135. People not going to give me credit because they say I got to become a champion, I got to do this, I got to do that. Bro, the proof is in the pudding. Skills, power and speed, IQ, like bro — Shakur Stevenson, Keyshawn and Tank are the best at 135, period. We need to fight.”

On when he thinks the right time is for him to fight Andy Cruz
“The ball is in their court. We’re waiting on them. We already sent them a contract, we already sent Kid Austin a contract. Kid Austin’s promoter said ‘we don’t want to entertain Keyshawn.’ I’m not getting up here fuckin’ lying to ya’ll. Kid Austin’s promoter said they don’t want to entertain me. I already got on live with Eddie Hearn and told Eddie Hearn to set up the fight. I don’t know what more ya’ll want me to do.

“I already tried to fight these guys when I was still co-maining. Now I’m main eventing. I can fight him now as a main event. If I send him a contract, are they going to sign it? I don’t fuckin’ know but at the end of the day I’m going for my world title and I’m going for the biggest fights out there. He is one of the biggest fights out there that I do want fuckin’ fight, like next fight type shit. But I’m not going to keep entertaining something that they not ready yet.

“What he 3-0, 4-0? Like he’s not ready yet. He don’t even have a fan base. His entire fan base is built around me. Again, I would want to fight him next fight but his promoters and managers are saying no.”

This is what the fighters had to say at the press conference:

Keyshawn Davis

“This means a lot to all three of us and, of course, to the city. There’s been a 30-year dry spell {of boxing}. And God had it written that we would come back to the city.”

“We’re doing this in a major way. We’ve already sold 10,000 tickets, and we’re going to sell some more. It’s going to be a treat on Friday.”

It’s super important for me to put on a show. Every single time I get in that ring, I love putting on shows. I like having fun, but I also like the people around me to have fun. I’m a dramatic fighter. I like doing the unexpected, so expect that Friday night.”

“It’s not going to be beautiful. There’s going to be blood everywhere. His nose might be a little lopsided after. But, I respect you, Gustavo. You are an amazing fighter. I appreciate you for taking the fight in my hometown, but I’m going to f**k you up.”

Gustavo Lemos

“I don’t see any difference between this and my last fights. I have a strong opponent, and I’m going to take advantage of this opportunity.”

“I’ve always said that he is a good opponent and that we’re going to have a beautiful fight.”

“I respect all my opponents, whether they are good or bad. I wish him good luck on Friday, and tell him to be careful.”

Troy Isley

“I expect a hometown fight like if I were fighting at home. Keyshawn’s family and my family. Everybody is going to be there. It’s going to be lit Friday night, and I can’t wait.”

“Our bond {with the Davis brothers} means everything. We started this thing together. We talked about everything we were going to do. And, we’re doing it now. And we’re going to continue to do it.”

“I’m going to f**k you up. That’s all that matters. He knows what’s up. He’s going to see Friday night. That’s why they call me the ‘Transformer.’”

Tyler Howard

“A win in a co-main event on ESPN+ against someone the caliber of Troy Isley, 2020 U.S. Olympian, is just another catapult into my career. It would be massive.”

“He keeps interrupting. But we’re gonna square up on Friday, bro. I'll be there. I promise you, I'll be there.”

“Listen, they call me ‘Hercules’ for a reason. If you come forward, you’re going to stop coming forward when you get rocked. It’s going to happen.”

Kelvin Davis

“It’s very special for all three of us. Keyshawn is having his first main event in Norfolk. And Keon is having his pro debut under his brother’s first main event. So, I’m proud of my little brothers. And it’s a dream come true.”

“I just have to be myself. It’s different now because we’re in Norfolk, my hometown. But I just have to be myself, and I’ll dominate in spectacular fashion.”

Keon Davis

“This means a lot to me. I’ve been thinking about this for my whole career. I’m happy to be here.”

“My experiences have made me a better fighter. It’s helped build my IQ. I appreciate guys like Terence Crawford, Shakur Stevenson, and Keyshawn Davis. They definitely helped me get better in the gym.”

Too bad he missed weight, especially by that much. I hope Davies beats him now.
Lemos is really good but missed weight by an entire weight class.
That would be one of the worst ways to lose.

No doubt it was.

Come on. Lemos knows there is no way Davis was gonna cancel the fight at his home time. He should he stripped of some of his purse too.

Rubbish advice AND I think he's inspiring the opposition.
