Tommy Morrison
Just watched a 70 minute interview done by Ben Doughty on Sugar, Silk and Stretch. Ben is joined by Tommy's widower, Trisha, who has spent the past 10 years trying to prove that Tommy DID NOT have HIV. She states that she has evidence from numerous specialists that he never had HIV and that in essence Tommy was "set up" to "get him out of boxing." The reason, however, is not disclosed. The end of the interview is devoted to her promoting an upcoming documentary about her late husband.

Morrison was one of the most exciting heavyweights about. Skillful, fast, explosive power and figured in some wild slugfests.
I wasn't aware the HIV positive condition was disputed until reading this post. When it was announced that Morrison had AIDS it came as no surprise as I think it was common knowledge that Tommy had slept with an astronomical number of women !

Re: Tommy Morrison
Her "case" is built on the fact that the wording on HIV tests doesn't necessarily says "tests for HIV," basically. He died from AIDS, period. He had muscle wasting for years due to HIV and that's why he had plastic muscles put inside his body to make him look like he was still fit when he wasn't.
Morrison essentially killed himself because he bought into some documentary claiming HIV was either man-made or not real and he stopped taking the drugs to keep him alive. I'm sure he did die from other things as well, but when your body loses immunity you'll basically come down with all sorts of things. So ultimately AIDS is what killed him.
He wasn't the first fighter out of Oklahoma to die from AIDS either. Some years before he was diagnosed Monte Masters had also contracted it and died. I would not be surprised if Morrison didn't get drugs or women or steroids from the same people as Monte did.
There is a reason why Morrison's comeback came to an end, and that was because he refused to give further proof that he didn't have HIV. When the federal government came out to Wyoming to prevent Morrison vs Williams (Whiz Kid) from throwing real punches, etc the match suddenly was billed as kickboxing and Williams took an obvious dive.
Trisha is either a liar or she is completely delusional. I remember talking to her once and she said something to the effect that they had sex and she never came down with HIV so she didn't believe he had it. But from my understanding people can be carriers of the disease without even knowing it.
The fact that they had his remains cremated after the fact demonstrates that somebody didn't want his body further tested. At least that's my view. His life will forever be a cautionary tale on multiple fronts. Don't buy into the hype.

Re: Tommy Morrison
When I say I wasn't aware his HIV infection was disputed, I mean the fact he tested positive in the first place, rather than Morrison claiming he was negative some years later.
All very sad as Tommy generated a lot of excitement during his career and a great KO highlight reel.

Re: Tommy Morrison
Tommy's wife says that he was bitten by an insect while in jail. The wound failed to heal and he was treated by a doctor who left 12ft of gauze in Tommy's stomach. When it was removed, apparently, he went in to septic shock and died.
Several things don't add up. Why would the powers that be want Morrison out of boxing. Surely if that was the case, Don King would have just ran down Morrison's contract until he was a free agent ? And who forced a 16st giant on to a plane and flew him "out of vegas" ? Sadly, Ben did not ask any of these questions.

Re: Tommy Morrison
ESPN's 30 for 30 on Morrison's life, named "Tommy", which came out in 2017 gives different perspectives on this. It doesn't specifically take sides but it's clear that his eventual widow was not good for his health, while Tommy was definitely delusional about it all.
He died of sepsis that could have got anyone but with most aids related deaths, who knows if you would have caught the disease or would it have been so lethal had you not been HIV positive. That's something they (him and his widow) didn't seem to understand.
Their suggestion that he was such a threat to the powers of boxing that they had to remove him simply doesn't make sense. It's the same with most conspiracy theories, if you can't answer the question of why they would do it, then it's already highly unlikely.

None of it makes sense to be honest. I think his widow is trying to make money out of a conspiracy theory that just doesn't hold up. Sadly, Ben Doughty does not question her theory. It's not an interview really, in that, for an hour Trisha just talks non - stop.

Re: Tommy Morrison
She is using a lot of half truths to muddy the waters. Some really valid points already mentioned.
Sepsis is the body's overwhelming reaction to a severe infection. Basically everything goes into overdrive and shuts the organs down in its effort to kick out the germs.
He probably did have a spider bite or insect bite which became infected. The question would be, would another 44 year old man who was in reasonable health - ie not immunosurpressed from HIV / AIDS, have succumb to the same infection?
I've always found his story tragic, but fascinating. And what a fighter he was!

Re: Tommy Morrison
He was great value and I still remember being gobsmacked by his medical retirement.
Conspiracy theories get a bad name, powerful people have conspired to various ends throughout history. However, in Morrison's case, no one benefits from bringing him down. Don King had signed him and there was major money to be made with him. It would have been better business to tamper with the blood tests of Seldon, Moorer, or Akinwande. But not Tommy Morrison.

Re: Tommy Morrison
Morrison was unfortunately broken mentally because of having HIV and eventually he went in denial. In any case, how he was doing at the latest stages of his life looks pretty much like AIDS.

I don't think that hiding he took from Mercer did him any favours from a CTE perspective.

looking at who he fought after the diagnosis, i can imagine it was their biggest pay days by miles and they thought it worth the risk

Re: Tommy Morrison
I actually bought into the story when Tommy made his comeback, but the fact he looked so ill and frail in his later years, added to the fact he died so young… says a lot really.
He he had a fight on that George Foreman bill in Japan was nuts. He did not even seem to be disputing the call back then.
