CAN YOU BELIEVE MATT SKELTON TURNED IT DOWN..?

Post by overhand_right »

Sat in a cafe on sunday, fingered through a few papers and stumbled on Frank Warrens colum in some trashy celebrities & tits newspaper.

Warren said 'Matt Skelton and I had to turn down the opportunity to fight Oleg Maskaev in Russia this December as the money was so derisory".

Maybe i'm nieve, but who is Skelton to turn down ANY purse offer? The guy is nearly 40, not a big draw in his own backyard, and turned down an opportunity to fight one of the most vulnerable heavyweight champs of all time!?!

Take your shot, hopefully win the title, THEN start calling the shots.

Whether or not you think Skelton could actually of won (I'd give him a 50/50 shot of throwing a spanner in the works), can you believe this guy turned down the chance of a lifetime? One that might never come again?

Reminds me of Alex Garcia turning down a big money world title fight with Bowe then getting iced by journeyman Mike Dixon for chump change.

You are right regarding Skelton - to turn down a genuine title tilt was simply madness, short purse or not.

I hadnt thought about Alex Garcia for a good many years until you brought him up here - a heavy punching hispanic big man with gang land tats... It really was a mistake for him to turn down Bowe, as you pointed out not long after Mike Dixon exposed his poor beard for what it was.

Still, he was exciting to watch when he let his hand go!

Yes I think it will turn out to be another Garcia episode.
Skelton should have taken the fight. I dont believe he'd win but you never know.
