Liam Paro to fight Richardson Hitchins in Puerto Rico, sources say

Liam Paro will defend his IBF junior welterweight title against Richardson Hitchins on Dec. 7 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, sources told ESPN.

Australia's Paro (25-0, 15 KOs) won the 140-pound title with a major upset decision victory over Subriel Matias in June.

That bout also took place in Puerto Rico, as Paro won the title in enemy territory. His first title defense, however, will be staged on neutral ground for both boxers; Hitchins is from New York.

Paro, 28, is ESPN's No. 4 junior welterweight. The southpaw previously stopped Montana Love in the sixth round of their December meeting.

Hitchins (18-0, 7 KOs) is also coming off the biggest win of his career, a controversial decision over Gustavo Lemos in an April firefight.

Hitchins was in talks to fight faded former titleholder Jose Pedraza, but promoter Eddie Hearn instead finalized a compelling 50-50 matchup between two of his top 140-pounders.

Liam Paro heading back to Puerto Rico for defence against Richardson Hitchins

Liam Paro defends his IBF junior-welterweight title for the first time, against Richardson Hitchins on December 7 at the Roberto Clemente Coliseo in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Australia's Paro, 25-0 (15 KOs), won his crown with an upset decision over Subriel Matias in Manati, Puerto Rico, in June.

Hitchins, 18-0 (7 KOs), his mandatory challenger, defeated Argentinian Gustavo Lemos in Las Vegas earlier in 2024, and the 27-year-old contender from Brooklyn will be fighting for a world belt for the first time.

“All the so-called big guys at 140lbs lost their tongues so I decided to bring on my mandatory defense early against Hitchins and clear the path for 2025,” said Paro. “I can’t wait to fight and show again why I’m the top guy at 140. I’m coming to shine again in beautiful Puerto Rico.

“For as long as I can remember, I’ve been telling anyone who would listen that I’m the best 140lbs fighter on the planet,” countered Hitchins. “On December 7, I finally get the chance to solidify that.

“Hats off to Liam Paro, he beat the so-called boogeyman of the division, but I ain’t Subriel Matias. He’s never been in with a fighter like me before. He didn’t want this fight, and it’s for good reason.

“This is my division. I am the man at 140 and once I get this belt, I’m bringing it back to New York and everything runs through me.”

On the undercard, at junior lightweight, 19-0 (10 KOs) Henry Lebron meets Christopher Diaz, 29-5 (19 KOs). Lebron said: “I am very happy with this opportunity to fight again in Puerto Rico in front of my people. This is going to be a great card. We are ready to give a great show. I am counting on all my Puerto Rican Fans.”

Diaz stated: “As a proud Puerto Rican, fighting in front of my countrymen on December 7 means everything to me. There’s no greater feeling than representing my people and putting on a show for them. I’m coming into this fight fully prepared, and I’m ready to leave it all in the ring against Henry Lebron. This is for Puerto Rico, and I won’t let them down.”

Puerto Rican Olympian Yankiel Rivera, 6-0 (2 KOs), is also on the bill, as is Jalil Hackett, 9-0 (7 KOs), the 13-1 (6 KOs) Jose Roman, and Marc Castro, 13-0 (8 KOS).

There is an outing for Stephanie Pineiro, 7-0 (2 KOs), and Puerto Rican Juan Zayas, 10-0-1 (8 KOs), enters an eight-round contrst at bantamweight against Dominican Marcelino Nieves, 19-0 (13 KOs). Matchroom’s Puerto Rican talent William Ortiz (6-0 4 KOs) faces fellow unbeaten Puerto Rican Lionell Colon (6-0 3 KOs) over eight rounds at 140lbs.

“We are thrilled to be back in Puerto Rico with a brilliant main event and stacked undercard,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “Liam was sensational when he ripped the strap from Subriel in June in a career-best performance against one of the most avoided fighters in the sport. Liam was happy to take on that challenge, and he’s happy to take on another difficult but very different challenge in Richardson.

"I’m fascinated to see how this fight plays out, and while it’s never easy to pit two of our fighters against each other, this is exactly what should be happening in the game – the best versus the best – and for both men it’s the chance to back up what they both say, that they are the man at 140lbs.

“The atmosphere in June in Manati was electric from the opening bell to the end, and we’ve got an undercard line-up that will have the fans on the edge of their seats like that once again. Lebron-Diaz will be a war; Yankiel is ready for a world title and he’ll show that in December, while Jalil has to be commended for taking on another challenge at such a young age."

Yankiel Rivera-Angel Gonzalez added to Liam Paro-Richardson Hitchins card

Yankiel Rivera will compete in a flyweight bout against Angel Gonzalez on December 7 at the Roberto Clemente Coliseo in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The DAZN-streamed event will be headlined by Liam Paro making a first defense of his junior welterweight title against Richardson Hitchins.

Rivera, 27, is ranked No. 3 by the WBA, No. 9 by the WBC and No. 11 by the WBO. He holds a 6-0 (2 KOs) and is fighting at home for the second time this year, defeating Victor Sandoval earlier this year. The 31-year-old Gonzalez, 14-0 (7 KOs) – a Hartford, Connecticut, native of Puerto Rican descent – will be aiming to pull off an upset.

“The goal for which I embarked on this wonderful journey full of hope is closer than ever,” said Rivera. “Each fight gets me closer to that cherished and long-awaited opportunity for a world title. On December 7, I will be putting my titles on the line, but I will also be disputing the WBC Silver title. This victory will propel me right at the door of that world title opportunity.”

“This fight means everything to me,” said Gonzalez. “The best thing about it is, I’m fighting in my island of Puerto Rico. The boxing energy in Puerto Rico is unparalleled, and it will give me more confidence and motivation to show all my people how great I am.”

The undercard features Marc Castro, 13-0 (8 KOs), against Agustin Quintana, 20-1-2 (13 KOs), in a 10-round lightweight bout, and Stephanie Pineiro, 7-0 (2 KOs), facing Ogleidis Suarez, 30-5-1 (14 KOs), in an eight-round welterweight fight. In a junior lightweight clash, Henry Lebron, 19-0 (10 KOs), will take on Christopher Diaz, 29-5 (19 KOs).

Hitchins is a tremendous talent, my only quibble is he doesn't throw enough punches.

Hitchins is some crystal clear talent but he will need to throw hands against the rambling Paro or he gets drowned.

Liam Paro and Richardson Hitchins looking to make their case as top dog at 140

Liam Paro and Richardson Hitchins are nearly set for action on December 7.

Liam Paro will defend the IBF super lightweight title against Richardson Hitchins in a Dec. 7 DAZN main event from Puerto Rico, and the two fighters are putting the final touches on their camps ahead of the bout.

Paro (25-0, 15 KO) is coming in with the much bigger momentum, having taken the IBF title from Subriel Matias in an upset road win on June 15, while Hitchins (18-0, 7 KO) was much less emphatic — to say the least — in a disputed victory over Gustavo Lemos on Apr. 6.

But Hitchins, 27, understandably feels his skillset and style could be a major issue for Paro, 28, but the champ is confident he’s simply the better man.

Notes from the two camps:

Liam Paro
On the win over Subriel Matias: “Taking out the so-called boogeyman in his backyard made it extra special. It wasn’t just about winning—it was about showing the world what we already knew. I’ll fight anyone, anywhere, the same way I did against the most avoided guy in the division.”

“Puerto Rico is a beautiful place with beautiful people, and I’m honored to defend my title there. It’s special to return to the island that gave me the opportunity to become a champion. I’m ready to win over even more fans with this performance.”

“I’ve always said I wanted the target on my back. Knowing that someone wants to take what I’ve worked my entire life for is even more motivating. I’ve stayed disciplined and focused, and my mindset remains the same—I’m always a contender. I know how hard this fight will be, but I’m ready to show the world what we already know. I’m one of the top guys in my division.”

“We know the task ahead of us is not going to be easy, and we have the perfect gameplan. I’ve said for a long time that I have the best team in the world, and we’ve continued to show that in every fight. This one will be no different.”

“I don’t look past anyone. I’m focused on getting the win and moving forward as champion. My goal is clear: to retain my title and prove why I’m the best in the division.”

“God willing, December 7 will be another defining night in my career. I’m ready to put on a dominating performance and show again why I’m the top guy at 140.”

Richardson Hitchins
“This is my division. I am the man at 140, and once I get this belt, I’m bringing it back to New York. This is my chance to show everyone what I’ve been saying all along — I’m the best 140 lb fighter in the world. Hats off to Liam Paro for taking the fight, but he’s never faced anyone like me.”

“I don’t take days off; I stay in shape year-round because this is my job. The discipline I’ve learned from greats like Floyd Mayweather and Gervonta Davis has helped me prepare for this moment. I feel like I’m in my physical prime, and I’ve made sure my mental game is just as strong.”

“Paro beat the so-called boogeyman of the division, but I’m not Matias. He’s never been in with a fighter like me before. I have the skills, the mindset, and the ability to take him apart and show why I’m at the top of the division. Whether it’s through boxing or fighting, I’ll find a way to win.”

“I wouldn’t consider this a shocking moment. Ever since I was a kid, I believed I was an upper-echelon fighter. This fight is the moment I’ve been working toward my entire life.”

Press Conference Quotes

Liam Paro
“It’s truly exciting, you know,” said Paro. “I’m very excited to be back in beautiful Puerto Rico. The country that gave me the opportunity to become champion. Come back here to win some more fans this time around. Very special. I just want to add to my Spanish from last time. Puerto Rico, Estoy de vuelta. Mucho Amo y respeto. ¡Vamos [Puerto Rico, I’m back. Much love and respect. Let’s go]! I’m excited, you know. We’ve put in hard yards in this camp. We’re ready. Look, we know the task ahead of us. You never overlook an opponent and we’re coming in guns blazing. Ready to put on a show for everybody here on Saturday night.”

Richardson Hitchins
“It’s definitely a surreal moment, you know what I’m saying?” said Hitchins. “I just feel like it’s not as surprising as when I first signed with you [Eddie Hearn]. When I first signed with you, I always wondered ‘I can’t wait till it’s my first world title fight’ or ‘how it would be?’ But, now that I’m more seasoned to the sport, I’ve been showing I’ve been at a world title level since I first signed with you. Always came into fights in shape. Always showed that I’m a purist in the sport of boxing. All-round fighter. So, [I’ve] been at the world stage. Now it’s just start showing the world that this is the only place that I belong. I don’t feel like my type of boxing will be accepted anywhere else but the world stage. I’m not the type of guy that you’ll see my type of talent at club shows and BB Kings in New York somewhere. I belong at this stage right here. Sitting next to Eddie Hearn, fighting the best fighters because that’s just the talent I bring to the sport and Saturday night, I’ll display it again.”

There usually are. But this isn’t considered a HUGE fight. So probably not.

I mean it was a close fight and they’re both with reMatchroom boxing. So probably will do it again.

I had it 116-112 Hitchins as well but it was a pretty boring fight tbh, not much action, mainly straight shots from both men, especially Hitchins who kept it simple with jabs/crosses Paro struggled to land clean, it was single shots, the rounds were close, not much quality in punching, Hitchins looked sharp but it was too much of a chessmatch

Same score for me. I'm a big fan of Hitchins and I think he's got a couple of gears left that we haven't seen yet. Personally, I'd like to see him start fast and maintain a fast pace.
