Eddie Hearn confirms offer made for Shakur Stevenson vs. Floyd Schofield

Eddie Hearn has confirmed that an offer has been sent to Floyd Schofield for a bout with WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson.

Stevenson was due to face his mandatory challenger William Zepeda on the upcoming Riyadh Season card on February 22 in Saudi Arabia. Zepeda has since confirmed that he will not be facing Stevenson after injuring his left forearm in a split decision win over Tevin Farmer earlier this month.

There had been rumours that fellow Golden Boy fighter, Schofield could jump in to replace the injured Zepeda. The 18-0 (12 KOs) American recently picked up the best win of his career against Rene Tellez Giron and was quick to declare his interest in a world title shot. The rumours that Schofield would be the man to replace Zepeda grew further after he traded blows on social media with Stevenson earlier this week.

Hearn, Stevenson’s promoter, has now confirmed that discussions are underway with Golden Boy and that the fight could possibly still land on the huge card in February.

“We agreed to fight Zepeda, so did Golden Boy apparently,” Hearn told Boxing Scene. “But apparently, he’s injured after a very lackluster performance. Schofield is a name that’s in the hat, we’ve been talking to Golden Boy, we’ve made them an offer and we’re trying to tie that up with His Excellency now.

“I think it’s a really good fight, two very good undefeated American fighters, a lot of chat, a lot of back and forth in that fight. It’s Thanksgiving today, which is difficult to do business on, but we’ll do our best tonight and see where it gets to.”

Schofield said on social media, "It is on Shakur Stevenson… You can’t run from this. 'And the new'… We accept the challenge. This is a message from [my promoter], Oscar De La Hoya. He told my father, 'My man, I seriously believe in your son so much and have love for him, but he’s 22 and I know how to make a champ for the next 15 years. Do not run the risk of getting beat because he had no experience. But if you’re telling me make it happen, then I will. Happy Thanksgiving and have a blessed day.'"

Schofield added, "Muhammad Ali was 22 years old when he defeated Sonny Liston in their 1964 world heavyweight championship boxing match... This victory marked the beginning of Ali's legendary career in boxing, where he would later be known as one of the greatest boxers of all time. And everyone said Ali had no chance… history will repeat."

Eddie Hearn: Shakur Stevenson-Floyd Schofield has 'a chance'

Matchroom Boxing chairman Eddie Hearn says he isn’t yet sure whether Floyd Schofield is the opponent to take on Shakur Stevenson – but won't rule it out.

Schofield, 22, originally from Jersey City, New Jersey, has been calling out Stevenson – a 27-year-old lightweight titleholder from Newark, New Jersey – since it was announced that Stevenson’s first choice for an opponent, William Zepeda, was injured and out of the mix.

Despite Schofield’s entreaties, Hearn – Stevenson’s promoter – isn’t convinced he’ll be the opponent for Stevenson on a proposed February 22 card in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

“I mean, I know that there's a back-and-forth, and the father wants it, the fighter wants it,” said Hearn during an interview with Fight Hub TV. “Obviously, we're talking to Golden Boy as well. We've made them an offer, when Shakur was supposed to be fighting Zepeda. All was good for February 22; now they're saying that Zepeda is not ready. [Stevenson] needs an opponent.

“For me, Schofield has been calling out for a while now. He's a very talented young fighter. [Stevenson] is a big step up. But at some point, you take a big step up, especially if there's a financial reward.”

Stevenson, 22-0 (10 KOs), was initially scheduled to face Joe Cordina on October 12 in Riyadh, but the fight was canceled after Cordina suffered a hand injury. Since then, Stevenson has expressed interest in facing Zepeda, his mandatory challenger, but then that fight fell through.

With Stevenson currently looking for a replacement, Schofield, 18-0 (12 KOs), wants to step into the void and challenge for a belt in what would be the biggest fight of his career thus far.

Hearn says only time will tell if the fight can happen.

“So, I don't know if that fight will get made, but we have been talking to Golden Boy about numbers around that fight – and there is a chance,” he said. “But we won't know for the next probably 24, 48 hours.”

Artur Beterbiev-Dmitry Bivol II set for February 22 in Riyadh

Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol will rematch for the undisputed light heavyweight title on February 22 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, headlining the latest Riyadh Season event on a card stacked with championship bouts.

The main event, announced Monday on social media and billed as "The Last Crescendo," will revisit the October clash in which Beterbiev narrowly edged Bivol via majority decision to unify the division.

In that fight, the 39-year-old Beterbiev, 21-0 (20 KOs), who has spent much of his career training in Montreal, went the distance for the first time. Meanwhile, the 33-year-old Bivol, 23-1 (12 KOs), suffered his first career defeat despite outlanding Beterbiev 142-134 on punches, according to CompuBox. Beterbiev, for his part, landed 90 power shots to Bivol’s 84, highlighting the razor-thin margin.

The undercard will see IBF heavyweight titleholder Daniel Dubois, 22-2 (21 KOs), defend his title against Joseph Parker, 35-3 (23 KOs). Dubois, 27, from the UK, is on a three-fight win streak following a 2023 stoppage loss to Oleksandr Usyk. Parker, 32, a New Zealand former titleholder, enters on a five-fight win streak, with notable victories over Deontay Wilder and Zhilei Zhang. Parker’s last title fight was a loss to Anthony Joshua in 2018, while Dubois knocked out Joshua in his most recent fight.

WBC lightweight titleholder Shakur Stevenson, 22-0 (10 KOs), will face Floyd Schofield, 18-0 (12 KOs). Stevenson, 27, originally from Newark and now training in Houston, accepted the challenge from Schofield, 22, nicknamed “Kid Austin,” following Schofield’s unanimous decision win over Rene Tellez Giron last month, after Schofield called Stevenson out. Their exchanges on social media helped build anticipation for this showdown, which many believed to be out of reach for Schofield.

Carlos Adames, 24-1 (18 KOs), will defend his WBC middleweight title against Hamzah Sheeraz, 21-0 (17 KOs). Adames, 30, based in Las Vegas, has been plagued by inactivity (fighting just once per year since 2022) but is riding a six-fight win streak. Sheeraz, 25, from the UK, earned the title shot with a stoppage of Tyler Denny in September.

The WBC interim junior middleweight title will be contested between Vergil Ortiz Jnr, 22-0 (21 KOs), and Israil Madrimov, 10-1-1 (7 KOs). Ortiz, 26, from Grand Prairie, Texas, won a majority decision over Serhii Bohachuk in August to capture the title. Madrimov, 29, from Uzbekistan, is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Terence Crawford in August in Los Angeles, marking Crawford’s debut at 154lbs. More perplexing is that Madrimov will be scheduled for this fight while keeping his fight on December 21 with Bohachuk.

“It’s surprising to see, considering Serhii knocked Vergil down twice and sent him to the hospital [August 10 in Ortiz’s narrow victory by decision in Las Vegas],” Tom Loeffler, Bohachuk’s promoter told Boxing Scene on Monday.

Madrimov would be left with just over two months to recover and prepare against a WBC interim titleholder who has knocked out every foe except Bohachuk.

Also on the card, 41-year-old Zhilei Zhang, 27-2-1 (22 KOs), will face Germany’s Agit Kabayel, 25-0 (17 KOs), for the WBC interim heavyweight title. Zhang, who twice stopped Joe Joyce before losing to Parker, rebounded with a dramatic knockout of Wilder in June. Kabayel, 32, earned this opportunity by stopping Frank Sanchez and Arslanbek Makhmudov in back-to-back fights.

Opening the event, Joshua Buatsi, 19-0 (13 KOs), will defend his WBO interim light heavyweight title against Callum Smith, 30-2 (22 KOs). Buatsi, 31, a 2016 Olympic bronze medalist training in California with Virgil Hunter, is coming off wins over Dan Azeez and Willy Hutchinson in 2024. Smith, 34, rebounded from a stoppage loss to Beterbiev with a fifth-round knockout of Carlos Galvan on Saturday.

‘I got too much experience for him’: Shakur Stevenson expects to handle Floyd Schofield

Shakur Stevenson believes he’s too skilled and experienced for Floyd Schofield to deal with in their upcoming fight.

Here’s some of what Stevenson had to say on those topics below.

Stevenson on his upcoming fight with Floyd Schofield
“It’s a familiar face to the fans, I think the people know him a little bit. So I think it’s going to be a fun fight. It’s a motivated kid, he wants to take my spot, take my crown, and I’m going to have to son him.

“When you fighting a young, hungry lion that’s a lot to deal with in itself. I remember being that age myself and I wanted to win a world title so bad so I worked super extremely hard and I’m expecting him to be the same way.

“I got too much experience for him, I’m too smart. I’m going to take him to another level that he’s never been at before.”

On wanting a fight against Gervonta Davis and Davis saying he’s looking at retirement
“I mean if he want to retire with the career that he got then go ahead and do whatever you got to do. I disagree with it, I think it’s soft, but that’s on him.

“I ain’t going to lie, I ain’t into chasing people around. I mean, if he’s willing to fight, I’m ready to fight and I think it should happen but I can’t like, I can’t sit there and chase you and then he try to make it seem as though I need him and I don’t need him.”

On if he thinks Devin Haney will beat Ryan Garcia in a prospective rematch
“I know he’s strong mentally so he can win for sure but it all depends on how he’s feeling after he gets back. Is he the same fighter? Let’s see, we got to find out.”

Be great if Floyd pulled off the upset.

Would also be great if Shakur turned in one of his 'on' performances.

We'll find out on Saturday.

FLOYD SCHOFIELD JR: I JUST WANT TO CHALLENGE MYSELF AGAINST THE BEST

Floyd Schofield Jr. had to laugh at the suggestions that he didn’t really want this fight.

A lot has been made about his decision to challenge three-division and reigning WBC lightweight titlist Shakur Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs) this early into his career. The pair of unbeaten Americans will meet this Saturday as part of the loaded Riyadh Season show on DAZN Pay-Per-View from Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Golden Boy Promotions chairman Oscar De La Hoya was admittedly hesitant but ultimately honored the wishes of the unbeaten lightweight and his father/head trainer Floyd Sr. to accept the opportunity. Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs), The Ring’s No. 3 lightweight, cautioned that his opponent should have listened to his promoter, a Hall of Fame former six-division titleholder.

“It sounds good—we still gotta fight on Saturday,” Schofield noted during Ring Magazine’s “The Final Note” segment conducted from the Mike Tyson Boxing Club in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. “It is what it is.

“I just feel, I like to test myself. That was really it. I’ve read a lot of comments saying I’m just doing it for the money. It sounds good but at the end of the day, boxing is about challenges. I just want to challenge myself against the best.”

Schofield (18-0, 12 KOs) is not rated among The Ring’s top ten lightweights as he enters his first major title fight. However, his team decided after a modest 2024 campaign that it was time to advance from the rising contender stage straight to the top.

The 22-year-old Austin, Texas-based lightweight tore through the prospect phase of his career with four dominant wins in 2023. The temperature cooled a bit with a disqualification win over Esteuri Suero in an uneven performance last March 16 in Las Vegas.

Schofield returned to the fight-friendly city last Nov. 2, where he brushed off the first knockdown of his career to soundly outpoint Rene Tellez Giron. Immediately afterward, his attention shifted towards Stevenson, a former Ring and unified WBC/WBO champion at 130 who also held the WBO title at featherweight.

The fight was eventually signed but only Stevenson made his way to London for the Jan. 13 kickoff press conference to formally announce Saturday’s full fight card. Schofield was among several participants who could not attend the show, though it was only his absence which drew the most attention.

“I had passport issues and couldn’t get on the plane,” Schofield stated, confirming a prior report from The Ring. I was upset, myself. It was gonna be my first time in London, I was excited. You know, passport issues and I couldn’t make it.”

There were no such issues ahead of fight week, as evidenced by Schofield’s in-country presence. Little trash talk has surfaced thus far, though admittedly his father’s style more so than his own.

That shouldn’t be mistaken for a lack of confidence, or suggestive of buyer’s remorse.

“I gotta say I’m coming out victorious,” Schofield calmly insisted. “It’s what we train for.”

SHAKUR STEVENSON: I'M THE BEST FIGHTER ON BETERBIEV-BIVOL CARD, I'M MUST-SEE TV

The Riyadh Season show on February 22 in Saudi Arabia – billed as the “The Last Crescendo” – is being heralded as the greatest boxing fight card ever assembled.

Topping the event is the undisputed light heavyweight title rematch between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol. In the co-main event slot, IBF heavyweight titleholder Daniel Dubois defends his belt for the first time against Joseph Parker. Other matchups include Vergil Ortiz Jr. vs. Israil Madrimov, Carlos Adames vs. Hamzah Sheeraz, and Zhilei Zhang vs. Agit Kabayel.

Preceding the co-main event will be Shakur Stevenson’s WBC lightweight title defense against Floyd Schofield Jr.

Stevenson is confident that he’s the star of the stacked show.

“No disrespect to them guys, but I’m the best fighter [on the card]. I’m what everyone wants to see on that card,” Stevenson said on DAZN’s “On the Ground” series. “A lot of people said they’re not going to wake up at a certain time [to watch the fight] and all that stuff. But everybody is going to be watching that sh-t. Everybody is going to want to see Shakur. A lot of people act like Shakur isn’t must-see TV, but I'm must-see TV. I’m the best fighter in boxing. Everyone wants to see me. Everybody wants to watch me. They’re going to keep paying attention.”

Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs) will be making his Matchroom Boxing debut and is fighting for the first time since scoring a unanimous decision against Artem Harutyunyan in July. The Newark, New Jersey native was originally supposed to fight in October against Joe Cordina, but a hand injury derailed his date.

“It’s been a rocky couple of months,” said Stevenson. “It just seems that a lot of people are counting me out. They talk bad about me. They act like I’m not this person that I’ve been my whole life. So, f--- them. Mentally, it starts to bother me but then you start to realize that the only thing that really matters is the people that care about you.”

Stevenson, a three-division champion and The Ring’s No. 3 rated lightweight, is unbothered by the challenges the upstart Schofield (18-0, 12 KOs) could present.

“He's a young lion who is hungry and undefeated. Truthfully, I guess you can say there is more to it,” said Stevenson. “This is going to be the best version of me. I think I am going to whoop some ass this year starting with Kid Austin. Hopefully everything will go right so all of my dreams come true.”

Report: Floyd Schofield off Riyadh card; Shakur Stevenson’s side issues warning on poisoning claim

Lightweight title challenger Floyd Schofield is reportedly off Saturday’s card against WBC titleholder Shakur Stevenson, with initial plans to summon a replacement opponent.

Schofield’s apparent withdrawal, first reported by Ring Magazine, follows his absence from Tuesday’s grand arrivals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and a bizarre claim by his father-trainer that set off an immediate response from Stevenson’s co-manager.

The 22-year-old Schofield, considered a heavy underdog to three-division titlist Stevenson in the “The Last Crescendo” card at Kingdom Arena, was the lone boxer on the main portion of the card who skipped the festivities, leading to speculation about his health and weight heading into the biggest fight of his young career.

On Schofield’s “X” page, believed to be run by his father and trainer, Floyd Schofield Snr, a since-deleted post released shortly before noon ET on Tuesday read: “They poisoned my son” and claimed that a masseuse associated with Stevenson’s team had “wiped a cream on my son.”

That was met swiftly by Stevenson’s co-manager, Josh Dubin.

“This fighter [Schofield] should get advised on the defamation laws in our country,” Dubin told BS on Tuesday. “Saying these things that slander Shakur does not come without legal consequences. Saying that his food was poisoned will not go unrecognized. [Schofield] is being put on notice right now.

“People might think there’s a kernel of truth in these lies [regarding the poisoning] by his father, when it seems to be a way for him to make an excuse he’s not going to fight.”

Dubin spoke minutes before the report of Schofield’s withdrawal went live.

“We’re not going to tolerate these lies and either [the Schofields] or someone on their behalf needs to publicly apologize now,” Dubin said.

Officials in Saudi Arabia have not confirmed if a replacement fighter will be retained to fight Stevenson on the stacked card that also includes heavyweight, light heavyweight and middleweight title fights.

Schofield appeared in good spirits Monday while doing interviews with assembled media. In an interview with FightHub, he called Stevenson a “diva” and said that his four-month-old “son is more of a man than him.”

There was not an immediate response to calls and text messages left for representatives of Golden Boy Promotions, which promotes Schofield.

Eddie Hearn, whose Matchroom Boxing company promotes Stevenson, had a less sinister hypothesis for why Schofield was absent: a mandatory weight check from the British Boxing Board of Control, which is overseeing the boxing action for this event.

The early weight checks have caught other American fighters by surprise.

“All of a sudden, you have a fighter like Floyd Schofield who has to make a check weight tomorrow, he might want to train tonight,” Hearn told IFL.TV. “He really doesn’t want to come to the grand arrivals going, ‘Hello, everybody!’ He’s getting ready for the check weight tomorrow. That’s why I believe he’s not here tonight.”

This wasn’t the first time Schofield, 18-0 (12 KOs), of Austin, Texas, has missed a public event ahead of his challenge of fellow New Jersey native Stevenson, 22-0 (10 KOs).

Schofield was not present for last month’s press conference in London, leading Stevenson to suggest that Schofield would pull out of the fight.

Stevenson made no mention of Schofield’s absence at the grand arrival, as he talked up his own excitement about fighting for the first time outside of the U.S. as a professional.

“I'm ready to show the world that I’m a superstar,” Stevenson said. “I think I’m one of the best fighters in the sport of boxing. The world will know February 22.”

Floyd Schofield misses Grand Arrivals, speculation over weight issues ahead of Shakur Stevenson fight

Floyd Schofield missed today’s Grand Arrivals event, fueling speculation as to the status of his fight with Shakur Stevenson.

Floyd Schofield missed today’s “Grand Arrivals” event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, ahead of Saturday’s challenge against WBC lightweight titleholder Shakur Stevenson.

There’s already plenty of chatter out there, including a now-deleted post from Schofield’s X account about him possibly being “poisoned” by Stevenson’s “massage lady” or SNAC, against whom the Schofield team have been railing for days now.

Promoter Eddie Hearn, however, told iFL TV that he thinks there could be a simple issue of Schofield working to make a required Wednesday check-in weight, due to a British Boxing Board of Control rule, as the BBBofC is the actual overseeing commission of most events in Saudi Arabia, including this one.

“I don’t represent Floyd Schofield. What I believe is — one of the issues, and I’ll be completely honest, it’s a bit of a pain in the ass,” Hearn said. “(The BBBofC) have a very strict rule of a check weight on the Wednesday of fight week. Now I’m not saying that rule is a bad rule, but nowhere else in the world, to my knowledge, of any major commission, has that rule.”

“All of a sudden, you’ve got a situation where a fighter like Floyd Schofield has to make a check weight tomorrow,” Hearn continued. “He might want to train tonight. He really doesn’t want to be coming to the Grand Arrivals going, ‘Hello, everybody!’ He’s getting ready for the check weight tomorrow. That’s why I believe he’s not here tonight. But that’s a question for Golden Boy, not for Eddie Hearn.”

Stevenson (22-0, 10 KO) has previously said he wouldn’t be surprised if Schofield (18-0, 12 KO) pulled out of the fight, and this situation will — until or unless it’s cleared up — only give that idea some fuel, at least for a few hours or whatever.

It should be noted that Schofield was present and in good spirits yesterday for other media work in Riyadh, and for now, Stevenson vs Schofield remains on Saturday’s card, but it is incredibly unusual for fighters to miss a “Grand Arrivals” event.

Golden Boy released a statement to World Boxing News shortly before the Padley substitution was confirmed.

“Yesterday, Floyd “Kid Austin” Schofield Jr. fell ill and was transported to the hospital as a precautionary measure. In the interest of Schofield’s health and safety, the British Boxing Board of Control made the decision to cancel his scheduled bout against Shakur Stevenson.

“Schofield has since been discharged from the hospital and is awaiting the results of his medical evaluation. We extend our gratitude to His Excellency Turki Alalshikh, SELA, and the medical professionals who provided Schofield with care,”
said GBP.

Stevenson on what the last 24 hours have been like
“It’s been fun. I love the show, I love everything about this. I’m still on the card, the show must go on, so I’m ready to put on a show.”

On predicting Schofield’s withdrawal
“I was already kind of expecting it. I knew the kid was scared from the start, I knew he was scared from the jump. When I seen him he was definitely scared, so I think he a punk.”

On his replacement opponent Padley
“I mean, I watched one round (of him fight). I’m in shape. They could’ve sent anybody, they could’ve said Lomachenko, let’s fight, I’d have said ‘let’s do it.’

“I know me at my best can beat anybody at their best so I’m the best in boxing and I’m going to show ya’ll Saturday night.”
